Why did William (albeit briefly) smile at Andrew?

Skye109 · 25/09/2025 11:27

At around 0.13 seconds in. A definite smirk appears on his face and if you watch his eyes, his eyes smile for a moment. It's very brief.
William has had a lifetime of being trained and is experienced enough to know how to skillfully suppress his expression quickly, which he does.
But a quick smile is there.
Why is William allowing a fleeting smile to develop in response to something Andrew says to him? Andrew saw it, too.
Why is he even standing right next to him?
Knowing the press are there? Knowing about the optics?
I don't believe all these reports saying William is trying to get his father to cut ties with Andrew.

I am a therapist.

Fuck me. Are you? I do hope not.

As if any of them give a fuck what their uncle did to some normies beyond the public hassle it caused the family

Exactly. He probably forgot for 5 seconds that he was supposed to care about what Andrew has done.

I think you need to see a therapist. This behaviour is not normal.

The royal family look after their own. Surely everyone knows this? We got all the talk of how Charlie was going to cut Andrew loose....that didn't happen. Now it's all about how William won't stand for Andrew being there....as if. They all know each other's secrets, that's why they all stay close.

PowerhouseOfTheCell · 25/09/2025 13:02

What's the alternative? Publicly headbutt him and shout nonce?

Jellycatspyjamas · 25/09/2025 12:52

Why on earth does it matter? No one can possibly know another persons thoughts or the motives behind their actions. And what you, as a private individual, would do in any given situation is going to be different to what someone with a high public profile would do. For god sake you’re scrutinising the actions of someone you don’t know, at an event you didn’t attend and have no connection to - literally get a life.

Do any of the guests at the funeral you're going to have a history of a close friendship with someone who is a paedophile, a sex trafficker and a rapist? And who continued the friendship even after they'd been told of their friends' criminal behaviour?
If so, would you smile at them?

Probably, if it meant avoiding causing at scene at the funeral of a very much valued family member who deserved to have a dignified send off and for the sake of their closest relations who were mourning their loss.

I would save the hard stare and fuck off for a time when it would not cause distress to others, but only the person deserving of the dressing down.

EnjoythemoneyJane · 25/09/2025 12:45

There was a post like this a while ago, with some nutter micro-analysing the facial expressions of one them, something like a ‘smile playing around the corners of his mouth but a deep sadness in the eyes, what can it all mean?’, when he was probably just bored or trying to hold a fart in.

She then went on a rant at the comments and the fact that the Royals should probably fear such dismissive people who don’t seem to care about them at all. No love, they shouldn’t. But they should definitely have a sniper on hand at all times to watch out for the obsessives who start threads like this, and spend hours doing a frame-by-frame back and forth of their every sigh and raised eyebrow, because you lot are fucking terrifying.

YABVVVU to have posted this on AIBU, OP. Your people are safely contained on the Royals board and you should probably join them.

I mean he was being polite did you think he should just blank him ? I know PA is a total creep .but .Prince william just responded politely with no "smirk"

As an aside did you go looking for that clip voluntarily ?

Yes I think our future King should blank someone who was close friends over many years with a man who was a paedophile, a sex trafficker and a rapist, and who continued to be friends with that man after he had been made aware of his crimes - crimes that he knew were being committed.
Yep. I definitely think he should have blanked him.

I think he should tell him to go away.
I think he should tell him he doesn't want to be associated with, or seen talking to, the friend of a paedophile, sex trafficker and rapist.
That's what I think William should do if Andrew speaks to him in public.
Not share a smile.

Well that just shows you're extremely naive.

Andrew is the king's brother, William's uncle. He is not a criminal himself however distasteful his behaviour has been. He will be seen in public at family events and for the sake of diplomacy and duty William will occasionally have to acknowledge him.

Sometimes that's just how people in public life have to behave, whatever their personal feelings. It may not provide the drama you obviously crave, but that's how it is.

If I was the heir to the throne and had my every public move scrutinised, and had an uncle like Andrew, yes I would acknowledge him at a family funeral if he spoke to me.

Would you.
Even if your uncle had enjoyed a long and close friendship with a man who was a paedophile, a sex trafficker and a rapist.

Simply this.
Andrew is his uncle after all. William's not going to give him a death stare in public. To me he looked like he responded politely and briefly, but didn't really want to talk to Andrew.

What do you think William should do if Andrew speaks to him in public OP?

I have to go to a funeral soon, there will be some people there I really don’t like and typically would avoid being anywhere near them. At the funeral I will nod and smile politely because that’s what you do in these situations for the good of everyone.

LavenderBlue19 · 25/09/2025 12:24

He's his uncle - he's still going to be polite, even if he can't stand him. Most of us have family we can't bear, but suck it up and play nice at family occasions.

Andrew seems to be entirely ignoring all attempts to oust him from the immediate family and just turns up anyway. Doubtless because he's the entitled son of a monarch and thinks/knows he can do what he wants.

Pity we can't banish unwanted public figures to distant islands nowadays.

Bloody hell you'd have a field day analysing my facial expressions - apparently I pull all sorts of faces involuntarily, and half the time I have no idea. People aren’t always in total control of their facial expressions. He may have smiled at something he said involuntarily. He might have been smiling at something totally unrelated. Who knows. But to give it this level of scrutiny isn’t healthy. As a PP has said, I really feel for the royals and other celebrities who can’t even go out with constipation without some random analysing their pained facial expressions 🙄
