No one has said they’re far left

Immigration has been at its highest under the Tories.

The backlog of asylum cases has been at its highest under the Tories.

So why present this as a far left issue?

I do think immigration laws need to be tightened.

And I’d like to see how Shabana Mahmood’s new policy on returning migrants works.

But the asylum seekers who do make it here have to be treated with basic human dignity. You can’t sign up to the European Court of Human Rights and then decide those rights only apply to white Brits or certain black and brown people. That’s hypocrisy.

And you can’t blame people looking for a better quality of life. People have been migrating since time immemorial. All of our ancestors left Africa 1.75m years ago to escape climate change.

We did remove the government that allowed this to happen.

I used to work in homelessness prevention and resettlement. Homeless veterans I worked with were very complex and often had a whole host of issues, notably MH and alcohol/drugs, that made it hard for them to maintain a tenancy when they were housed. Some of them had been homeless several times over.

All that work has been cut to the bone. The project I worked on 15 years ago is still going, but it now has 8 staff, compared to the 110 it had when I started.

None of that is down to increased migration.

That doesn’t make it alright but they aren’t talking about just white bread, the meals are poor quality and unhealthy, chips and chicken nuggets at every meal for children. That is poor nutrition.
