Suddenly I can’t drink alcohol

I have been quite a regular wine drinker until recently and used to enjoy a glass but I just can’t drink it, all of a sudden, I don’t like the taste and feel like I just can’t enjoy it or force it down.
I have been forced to stop drinking it by sudden unexplained aversion.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Perimenopause. Try organic wine, I can still drink that (so it must be the additives that are getting to me.
I enjoy beer much more than I used to though

This happened to me 7 years ago and it was one of the best things that ever happened to me. I now cannot drink any alcohol at all or I have a horrible reaction, even a small glass of wine or Baileys. This was after about 20 years of being an absolute lush. I'm teetotal now and absolutely love never being hungover, never having shame or anxiety about what I did the night before and just generally feeling only positive things! Don't get me started on Sunday mornings- I love getting up early for a walk. I wasn't pregnant by the way; my body just knew it was time for me to stop caning the booze and now rejects anything more than a sip of my husband's beer. Considering the fact that I used to be embarrassed leaving my bottles in the recycling bins, this shows how much my body wanted me to stop drinking! At the time, people were suggesting different types of alcohol I could try to get around it but I just quit everything and took it for the wonderful gift that it is.

Edited to add, I was 36. Not even in peri at that stage!

Perimenopause / covid / a medical issue which affects your sense of smell.

Those are you agreeing with OP, can ask if you were big wine drinkers beforehand? Like another poster would quite like if I get this through peri-m as nothing else seems to curb my love of a glass or few

I wouldn't say a big drinker, but I could easily have two or even three glasses when out. Or a glass while making dinner in the evening. And then no issues the next day.

Then into my 40s I felt like shit the next day even after one. If I had a bit more when out, I would get terrible anxiety the next day. On top of getting a stuffy nose when drinking wine. None of these were an issue before.

And I don't even miss it. If I'm cooking and I fancy something I jazz up some ginger ale or something similar. It was more of a habit when cooking to be really honest.

Menopause for me. Started off with alcohol having zero effect (no 'buzz') but givin me the most dreadful headaches, then progressed to only one small glass rendering me on the bathroom floor all night vomiting so hard that I nearly suffocate, plus crushing headache. Seemed to be a sulphite allergy, but also got it from gin (did some cautious experimentation). Now don't drink anything at all because the effects were so horrific.

It's your age

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 23/09/2025 14:51

DP had this when she was pregnant, in fact it was literally the only warning sign she was pregnant!

She's gone right off it again now, but this time it's due to being peri-menopausal. It's started making her feel bloated and she'll get killer hangovers of even a couple of beers.

Freysimo · 23/09/2025 14:36

I couldn't understand why I'd suddenly gone off my favourite wine. I then developed reflux and colonoscopy revealed I had hiatus hernia, now on Lansoprazole. Not sure if there's any scientific evidence for this though! I still don't really enjoy wine the way that I used to prior to h.h.

isitmyturn · 23/09/2025 14:36

Used to love wine, now it gives me terrible heartburn even though I still enjoy the taste. If I want to drink alcohol now I have beer.

tinymoon · 23/09/2025 14:30

This has happened to me. I’ve just recently realised I’m getting a histamine intolerance as I’m getting older which I think is the reason for it.

TattooStan · 23/09/2025 14:26

I love having one or two glasses at the weekend, but I've become almost pathologically terrified of overdoing it. It makes me feel horrific to have even just, say, 4 small glasses with food. DH and I are friends with a couple who are pretty boozy and, they're SO lovely, but I dread seeing them.

I was in my forties when red wine caused my face to go red and my neck to get itchy. I blamed my daughter at the time because I was fine until I had her at 40. I found that I gradually couldn’t drink any form of alcohol. When I was in my fifties I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and I wonder if the two things could connected.

I’m in my 40s and husband had a vacectomy years ago. I am definitely not pregnant.

I’m perimenopausal and have gone off most alcohols, can’t tolerate it either and feel like crap for a few days if I drink, mainly don’t miss it

I can just about drink Rose and Prosecco

Mosy likely peri menopause - yet another wonderful symptom 🙄

Strawbewwy · 23/09/2025 13:25

Any new lumps or bumps? This was a sign of cancer in someone I know, probably completely dramatic response here but just have a quick think/check over yourself pleased

Me too. Haven’t drunk a drop (bar one at a hen night I didn’t want) for three years. It makes absolutely no difference to my life until I meet someone who is weirdly offended by me not drinking. I care not.

Isn't it a strange reaction. I have found this as well.

I really cannot see why someone else has so much concern for the fact I do not want an alcoholic drink.

But then again, I have the same issue with being single. I love it, but many people around me seem to be offended about it.

nomas · 23/09/2025 13:24

I think the WHO said the only acceptable level of alcohol is zero alcohol.

childofthe607080s · 23/09/2025 13:22

first symptom of pregnancy

isthismylifenow · 23/09/2025 13:21

It was the same for me. In my early 40s I could no longer drink red wine, as when I did for some reason it affected my kidneys. So I would then only drink white or rose at a push. Then a few years later I couldn't drink either of these, I would have strange reactions, like a sulphate allergy (numbness of face etc). So now I don't drink wine ever as the side effects were getting ridiculous.

I cannot even say I miss it at all.

SleepyLlamaFace · 23/09/2025 13:21

Another vote for peri-menopause. Can barely force down a glass or two a year nowadays!

GoldDuster · 23/09/2025 13:18

I also have gone off drinking, not overnight but over the course of my mid to late forties. Don't care if I never drink again, can have a good cocktail or two, but that's the limit and wine I would pour down the sink.

lemoncrisp · 23/09/2025 13:18

Mounjaro has had this effect on me. Suddenly can't stand the taste of alcohol. Saves money and helps with weight loss! 😀

Feel the same, mid 30s
Mine began after a very heavy night out and horrific hangover about 4 months ago
I used to drink a bottle a week, now I despise the taste and have zero craving
To be honest, I see it as a blessing
