To want to put Xmas tree up on November 1st?

I am due a baby on 12th November, however getting a planned section about a week before this (anytime from 5th November onwards). I also have a very busy 2 year old. Due to having a section planned I’ll be resting quite a bit after this as well as looking after my newborn 24/7. I can’t imagine untangling Christmas lights and putting up the decorations once baby arrives.

I told DH I want to put the Xmas tree to November 1st so we don’t need to worry about doing this once baby is here. Is this too early??

Definitely do this, you won't regret it! Our Christmas decorations have been going up on November 1st for years, it's our tradition and we're known for it. Friends and family love to come round in November and see our house fully decorated.
I am utterly obsessed with Christmas and am definitely in festive mode from November 1st onwards anyway so I recognise that this behaviour is probably a bit odd, but we love the decorations so much that it's a shame to restrict them to December, especially since they take so long to put up and bring such joy!
We did a stripped down Christmas display last year as I was due to have a c-section in early January and we didn't want to be having to think about taking everything down around my delivery date. This will be our beautiful baby's first Christmas so we're keen to make it special, though probably more for our sake than hers if I'm Honest! However, we will have to get creative with our holiday displays this year as our little one is crawling and is on the verge of walking, so I don't think any floor-based trees or ornaments will be safe come November. Luckily, we have lots of decorations and lots of options so it will all be good!
Please enjoy giving yourself and your family some early Christmas cheer, it'll be so lovely to be cudling your new baby in the glow of fairy lights too! Wishing you all the very best for your new arrival and a very happy, slightly early, Christmas!

DH can do it but not in November.

Yes, at least wait until Guy Fawkes night is out the way!

TalulahJP · 23/09/2025 14:05

Will your toddler not just pull at the tree? How will you manage to distract the wee one while youre in a bit of discomfort or bf the new baby? Would it not be safer to wait until youre healed and fit to dash around after small children again. Plus it’s a looonnnngggg time to wait for Santa from 1 November to 25 December…

Well I don’t know if we did parenthood wrong but both DH and I were exhausted when we had a newborn and a toddler!

Fair enough

cocobeaner · 23/09/2025 13:58

My daughter was born 16/11 and had a two year old and a four year old at the time. It never occurred to me to put the tree up early! I think ours went up mid december that year as usual, but it was absolutely fine. DH did the "getting it all out of the loft" bit and I just put some baubles on. You're overthinking it I think, which is totally understandable, but I doubt you'll be "flat out" to be honest - neither of your kids is at school (busy time of year for that) and you'll be on mat leave, you have loads of time to do decorations.

Why would he be “exhausted”? You’re really overthinking this, you’ll be on maternity leave and can just take your time with it all

Why the rush? November is way too early to be faffing with Christmas decorations. I had a baby on 4th December, my decorations didnt go up until at least 3 weeks after . Enjoy your baby .

SummerFrog25 · 23/09/2025 12:44

I often put mine up the first weekend in Nov & often don't take it down until candlesmas (Feb) so no, I don't get fed up with it!

unfortunately it's not a 'real' one as I'm not physically able to deal with that (& I live alone).

im sure your DH won't be so exhausted he can't put the tree up in Dec though.

how about a more 'cosy' Autumn look with lights until then?

I personally wouldn't want to be dealing with a hyped up toddler for many weeks wanting Santa to come! & it might be less exciting/bit of a let down for them if it starts so early?!

My tree is up already. Up in the loft where it belongs.

😂

Bowling4soup · 23/09/2025 12:37

can’t really see the logic behind doing it that early. I’d just do it mid dec, about a month after your cs and you can do it together by then I’m sure :)

way to early for Xmas but then again my view is decs should go up on Xmas Eve and down on boxing day if you have to put any up at all I personally don't own any Xmas decs and have no intention of wasting money on buying some as it is way to overrated

Ho! Ho! Ho!

Antimimisti · 23/09/2025 12:27

Do it, why not?

Are we getting the Christmas threads over with early this year? Perhaps we could start

Christmas Eve boxes - great idea or unnecessary tat
Elf on the shelf - charming fun for the kids or an annoying faux-tradition
AIBU to take my Christmas tree down on Christmas Eve
My neighbour's Christmas lights are keeping me awake
Is it 'Santa Claus' or 'Father Christmas'
The Christmas markets this year are rubbish
Visited a 'Lapland experience' and all the elves were pissed, can I sue them?
What can I have for Christmas dinner that isn't turkey
Have I got my DC too many/not enough Christmas presents?
I'm sick of all the Christmas threads now

MalinandGo · 23/09/2025 12:17

How about a double whammy? Sort the lights out now and then put them up somewhere for the twinkly lights alone, but then hang fire on the actual tree and other decorations? We have some nice fairy lights year round which are so lovely on a chilly miserable night.

farmergirl15 · 23/09/2025 11:56

I always put mine up the 1st November. It makes me happy so I don’t care what anyone else thinks! If it’s convenient for you then do it!

TeaForTheTillermanSteakForTheSun · 23/09/2025 11:55

I put my tree up in November every year and I love it, it cheers the place up, I love the lights when it's cold and dark outside, and it makes me happy.

Do what you want op, if it makes you happy then it really doesn't matter.

janehopper · 23/09/2025 11:47

I wish people would just keep Christmas for Christmas. It ruins it for me if it goes on for two months before. I'm a bit precious about it 😆

Lavenderandbrown · 23/09/2025 00:14

I recognize your apprehension about getting the tree done while you are taking care of newborn and toddler as my dd was born on 11/18.

It’s too early you will tire of the tree.

aim for the weekend of 11/28/29. Maybe a friend or family member can come over and hold baby while you DH and you toddler decorate the tree.

This typo made me laugh. Only four years to wait, OP! 🤣🎄

honeylulu · 23/09/2025 06:57

Nooooo! Chavtastic to have a tree up 1st November.

Just put the twinkly lights up on the mantlepiece (I admit the way you've described it sounds nice) and move them to the tree once it goes up ... in December.

Shetlands · 23/09/2025 06:43

Your DH has offered to do it all at the appropriate time so just let him do it. I think you're in danger of belittling his capabilities by saying he'll be too tired. Let him be the judge of his own ability and trust him to handle the Christmas decorations!

NoisyLittleOtter · 23/09/2025 06:36

LindorDoubleChoc · 23/09/2025 04:30

Where is the eye roll emoji when you need it.

Your 2 year old is asking about Christmas trees in September? Who put that idea in his head?

We went to Costco a few weeks ago and they had the big Christmas decorations in. Tesco and Aldi have Christmas chocolate in. My youngest is autistic and has no concept of time (similar to a toddler really) and keeps asking to put our tree up. It’s hardly that unbelievable that a 2 year old would be doing the same when shops are already stocking Christmas stuff.

NoisyLittleOtter · 23/09/2025 06:33

Cynic17 · 22/09/2025 22:26

Christmas trees go up on Christmas Eve (there's a clue in the name!).
Put it up on 1st November, and there'll be no needles left by December.
Or, you know, just do without..... you baby will neither know nor care, and you'll have more important things to think about.

The older child might care though. As might the OP and her DH! Even adults like Christmas trees 😉

cardpin · 23/09/2025 06:22

If it will make you happy then do it OP. I put mine up much earlier than most people (usually around 10th-15th November), my MIL rolls her eyes and laughs every year but she is used to it now. My children and husband love it and I'm not hurting anyone.

We never get bored of it. We usually take it down on or around 5th January and I'm always sad to see it go!

Tyler4689 · 23/09/2025 06:18

Do it if you want too 😊

I usually put mine up mid November and I don’t get sick of it, I love it!

By November, once Halloween is done, I feel there is an exciting sense of Christmas in the air, and for me personally it doesn’t feel out of place. Enjoy extending Christmas, and good luck with your new baby 🎄
