DD and boyfriend are wasting their lives

DD 27 and her boyfriend (also 27) are proper home bodies. All they seem to do in their free time is go for country walks with their dogs, meals out or Sunday markets 😂

When I was in my 20s I was partying, clubbing and getting up to all sorts, I fear they are wasting their youth!

Last weekend they baked cookies and went on a long country walk with the dogs with a pub lunch. DD spends a lot of time reading and crocheting bits here and there. The boyfriend has started furniture restoration as a hobby. They’re like an old couple honestly!

DD got annoyed with me because I said to them they need to be out enjoying their 20s (and soon 30s) and not acting like a couple in their 60s. DP says leave them be but I just don’t want them to regret not living life to the full. You’re a long time old as they say.

You keep finishing all your posts with a laughing face...but only you is laughing. Everyone else thinks you're horrible.

You aren't talking to a bunch of teenagers here, we're not going to chuckle along with you. One good thing about mumsnet is that it is full of educated, mature women who give will call out bad behaviour. You are showing yourself up as pretty silly, uneducated, gossipy and nasty.
You certainly don't sound like someone who has travelled the world, you Sound like someone who has spent her life getting pissed and having a 'mad time'.

Catfox1 · 22/09/2025 17:36

I’d be so upset if my Mum had written this about me

Jtfrtj · 22/09/2025 17:36

FiddIedeedee · 22/09/2025 15:36

I don’t think I’m explaining myself properly. They’re proper home bodies I don’t want them to regret not experiencing the world. I asked DD if she wanted to travel and she said they may go to Japan one day but would rather explore the U.K. at the moment. Honestly I think they’d be happy if they never left the County 😝

Ignore the cow comments OP, I understand you want the best for your daughter but people enjoy deliberately missing the point on here and being harsh.

I also think it’s a bit odd. Booking a walking holiday when they walk every weekend 🫩 I’ve no idea why a young childless couple wouldn’t want to explore the world together, providing they have the finances to do so. They’ve not even lived potentially a third of their life yet and they’re already acting like they’re retired.

CantBreathe90 · 22/09/2025 17:36

Tbh even if they were into clubbing, I think they've missed the boat a bit by 27. Most people I knew were retiring from the club scene by that age.

If they really do regret it in a few years, they can always have a midlife crisis that involves binge drinking a drug taking - that's the other cohort of people out and about ime. I'd say 30s is the main age group of people not clubbing (other than children or the elderly). Probably as a lot of people are either building careers or families at this stage.

FiddIedeedee · 22/09/2025 17:11

Ok I think calling me a cow is a bit harsh.

I am if course glad she’s happy (and found the male version of herself!) there’s just more to life than the 5 odd miles around your house isn’t there. I know people are hanging in my comments about clubbing but it’s not just that it’s just the amount I’d seen and done by her age I just don’t want her to regret it.

And yes I have a dog but I’m old and it was a comment about his all young couples seem to have dogs and it ties them down.

Anyway I guess I’m being unreasonable so I’ll be quiet.

All that eye opening clubbing and travel has made you really judgemental and closed minded though. You don't seem to be able to comprehend that your daughter has different likes and interests to you - ones that sound brilliant for her mental and physical health - and just write her off as well boring😝.

Imagine having a mother that was so disappointed in you. 😥

I did… mine hated that I wasn’t the blonde petite daughter she wanted and boy did I know it

Pieceofpurplesky · 22/09/2025 17:33

My DS and his GF are the same, they don't live together as both just finished university. They prefer visiting a castle or baking cookies and reading. She does craft things and he walks and photographs things (not for social media but for himself). If he drinks it tends to be real ale or red wine!

I was pissed in a club or a field and travelled all over.
I think people are more insular these days

sugarapplelane · 22/09/2025 17:33

This is a horrible thread. I just want to give her DD a huge hug and tell her that she is perfect the way she is.

Mumwithbaggage · 22/09/2025 17:32

I think young people have a much more balanced life these days - my 29yo (who was president of her uni cocktail society and very involved with the freshers' squad) runs Scouts because she got so much from it as a teenager and loves camping and hiking with her bf. She does macrame too! To be fair, she can still party (all my kids can) but it's not her day to day life.

More ‘hilarious’ emojis…

lessglittermoremud · 22/09/2025 17:31

I think your DD life sounds lovely and you’ll not do yourself any favours by being so disparaging about it.
She has a partner who enjoys the same things, their pursuits are healthy and we live in a beautiful part of the world.

FiddIedeedee · 22/09/2025 17:25

I am grateful of course I am. I love her which is why it was worrying me she is cosplaying the life of an old person.

My friends think the same by the way. They joke about it because theirs are off travelling in New Zealand or have moved to Paris or whatever and I have Barbara from The Good Life. 😂

Why are these friends more important than your own daughter?
Just reflect for a moment. You cannot accept who she is, you keep calling her "old". I don't know why you're so negative about her. Please just appreciate your good fortune.
(ps I found Barbara from The Good Life immensely irritating, Margot Leadbetter rocked. I suspect she's Margot!)

madnessitellyou · 22/09/2025 17:30

Honestly op this is horrible. Your dd is behaving in a way that many people in their late 20s behave. She’s getting ready to settle and that’s a good thing!

At some point she’ll work out she’s a massive disappointment to you and she’ll stop bothering.

Your friends sound absolutely awful too. How dare you all take the piss out of someone who is conducting themselves in a completely reasonable way. One of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever read here tbh.

Cherryicecreamx · 22/09/2025 17:30

I thought you were going to say because they're unemployed/drinking/partying etc. not that they have created the most idyllic life for themselves! I think most parents would be over the moon if their kids were happy and settled in a relationship like this. It sounds healthy, calm, balanced.
Partying is overrated anyway! Hangovers, days wasted, people talking rubbish all night. I think they're doing it right.

Let them joke all they want.
it sounds to me like your DD is a lovely person and all you and your mates can do is make jokes at her expense.
I think you’re quite mean spirited

Ah it's all become clear with this reply.

It sounds like your daughter has a wonderful life doing what makes her happy and not just copying your social circle.

janiejonstone · 22/09/2025 17:29

If I had my 20s again, I'd do far less going out and be more comfortable acknowledging that I much preferred reading a book.

Don't worry about it, keep up with your nasty comments and laughing faces about your own daughter and you won't have your barbara for much longer, simple.

Imisscoffee2021 · 22/09/2025 17:28

If this is genuine then they sound awesome. They can carry their genuine passions into all stages of life, what a lovely pair they sound.

Coffeeishot · 22/09/2025 17:28

JustStopItNorasaurus · 22/09/2025 17:26

Oh, are you trying to compete with your friends?

Sounds like it and she can't talk about their exciting life.

You're a crap mum, allowing your friends to "joke" about your DD like that. Take your judgement and disappointment elsewhere.

You sound horrible.

My friends have children all around the same age and what they’re doing and what DD is doing seems worlds apart so not sure how generational it is. Maybe more of a sub culture within a generation.

So flipping what. Your DD is her own person and that is something to look up to. She’s unashamedly herself. She’s not following the crowd. A very admirable quality and you should be proud of her, not moaning here that you want her to be the same as other youngsters

FiddIedeedee · 22/09/2025 17:26

BunnyLake · 22/09/2025 17:21

Are you the mother of my son’s gf? (No but you sound similar). We (my son and I) both think his gf’s mother is a jerk as she can’t accept her dd just likes a quiet life.

Ok? 🤷‍♀️
