To ask whether anyone here has ever been investigated by DWP for “living with a partner”?

My friend has just been asked to attend a compliance interview at the job centre - she claims universal credit as a single mother to 2 kids, and single person council tax discount she has a boyfriend but they don’t live together full time - he lives with his father - he obviously stays over 3/4 nights a week.

Just wondered what the process was etc

Ironically for the working population it does actually save money to move in with a partner. Rent is halved, batch cooking is cheaper, bills are shared. But not when the taxpayer is acting as your other half!

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/09/2025 17:19

Assuming if he lives with his dad , his dad /him will be paying the full council tax and have bills /bank account in dads adddess

if he isn’t under dads address to vote then may alert them

WhereYouLeftIt · 23/09/2025 16:47

"It’s a fairly newish relationship" but he's staying over 3/4 nights per week? She needs to give her head a wobble.

What I’m not allowed a view on benefits? I asked for information as my friend IS in a situation and predominately because I was asked to attend for support

So your friend needs you to hold her hand. I see nothing wrong with that. You will not be implicated or investigates. If you have time support her.

Her new DP sound like he's avoiding tax if he's working cash in hand so I would guess they are probably living together too, otherwise they would do things properly in all parts of life.

As for the DD, please do something if she needs protecting. Either speak to the mum or report to SS. The mum clearly has poor judgement and a child could be at risk.

How do you usually prove you are "resident" somewhere else?

Registered for council tax
Paying rent/mortgage/insurance
Registered with GP
Registered for banking/tax purposes
Paying utility bills in your name

If you are a single household then these documents should not be difficult to produce. However if you are living with someone else (eg parent) who is the householder then the utilities, c/tax.rent/mortgage will be in their name.

This case is an object lesson never to let neighbours know your financial circumstances if you are on benefit. Also to stay off social media, Some neighbours are reptiles - and thats an insult to reptiles.

May not always be the neighbours or other people contacting the DWP. Interestingly there are jobs currently advertised with DWP for ‘under cover surveillance officers’, no need for anyone to ‘tell’ and if they do, staff to watch and evidence actual behaviours.

Did anyone actually believe that this was about "a friend" then?
I kind of assumed it was OP from the start

Ditto

So you are also a single parent of two children, and you’ve just lost your job and have applied for UC.
oh and you have a DP that you don’t live with.

lots of parallels with this “friend”

Interesting

Deliciouslyfree · 23/09/2025 16:06

AS this OP… and you’ll see dozens and dozens of posts on benefits

and now fibbing about that…. Odd

What happens if someone is claiming as a single partner but has a new partner living with them? I know someone who is clearly milking the system - brand new housing association house, works part time (but just over the UC band) and has two children but claims partner doesn’t live with her (he very much does!!)

goodness the parallels are quite remarkable 😆

So this person you wrote about here last month… isn’t this person!?

a cursory AS reveals you’re all over a broad range of threads with one common feature… they involve benefits and often fraud

You’re all over mumsnet discussing starting threads about benefits op and fraud and DWP.

Some might say you seem to be mining information….

My post on another thread is about a NEIGHBOUR

Huh? We think it’s her ex so we wondered if we could prove it - she had been the victim of harrasement and dv

I dont think you are told who reports you to DWP or HMRC as it is anonymous. Someone reporting someone also wont get told of any outcome either.
Some reports are malicious though.
If your friend has done nothing wrong and can prove she lives alone etc then it will probably be ok. I imagine you are worried for her. Some ex partners can be very nasty and will do shitty things to get back at people.

It’s the same friend actually - if you scroll up you will see my comment from yesterday regarding TikTok, but thank you for your patronising advice - much appreciated

Yes and has never said anything about telling the job centre about my boyfriend at all. We dont live together. But the other poster here is really confusing me by saying he cant watch TV at my house etc.

They're talking shit.

Ah is this why you said this..... because your worried that shes going to find out that its you that's reported her?

Presumably your support worker is already aware of your circumstances?

Just out of interest, have you ever been contacted by HMRC? Or has anyone ever found out it was you who did it?

TheSpiritofDarkandLonelyWater · 23/09/2025 15:38

I dont have meetings at the job centre because I am in the LCWRA group.
I will ask my support worker when I next see her.

TheSpiritofDarkandLonelyWater · 23/09/2025 15:33

Please can you tell me if I have to inform the job centre about a boyfriend that I do not live with. We have our own homes and own bills and all of this can be proven. He buys me meals when we go out.
I am getting worried now.

No you don't need to declare that. There is no need to worry. It's a somewhat emotive topic so people won't respond just with the facts unfortunately.

Wynter25 · 23/09/2025 15:39

LivingDeadGirlUK · 22/09/2025 16:17

God single parents can't win can they? Move a boyfriend in straight away and they are being selfish and not thinking of the children, live separately and they are 'rinsing the system'.

Yep. It's ridiculous
