Random drunk stuck his head through my open living room window and scared me senseless

I know I’m not being unreasonable but just need to say this somewhere as I’m a bit speechless. I live on a road either just a few houses and a golf club. No pavement on the road and it’s a bendy country road so very rare we get people walking it, but it is just a few hundred meters before you get to the pavement and streets heading into the little town.

I’m up late working and there’s obviously some event on at the golf club that must have ended around 1am as I heard drunk people walking up to the town, happens every so often after an event at the club. It’s warm here so I’ve got the living room window open, and I was writing so looking down when I heard laughing outside and a noise, which was my window being pulled further open. I looked up as a man put his head through the window whilst making stupid laddy drunk noises and a gurning face. I did actually scream and jumped up. It all happened in seconds and I actually went towards the window, where there is a table by the window and it had some kid’s toys on it so I grabbed one of the plastic chuck and swung for the guy as he ducked his head back outside. I saw a him run back to a few other lads and they then ran off up the road.

It was obviously a “prank” by some drunk idiots but it’s really shaken me. I think I’ll be popping down to the golf club in the morning to have a word and see if I can find out whose party it was but it’s not like anything will come of it even if I can track down whoever had the invite list.

I’m just shaken and quite angry about it, not really sure what else to say.

You should have had a fly screen on it. No one should physically be able to half climb his way into your house. You should have had your window fixed so that's not possible. Especially as you're vulnerable with 2 kids. That would be hard to get over, but your house is clearly not secure and you need to fix it.

Who has fly screens on windows in the Uk?! Not many at all! Most people here have windows that when open more than a tiny bit, someone could pull open further and climb through

L0bstersLass · 25/09/2025 12:18

Delighted to see your update.
Don't feel bad for him. He's learned a hard lesson early enough on in his life for it to have little impact on his future. Hopefully it will help him with making better decisions.
I'm pleased to see the club taking it so seriously.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 24/09/2025 14:42

How terrifying for you, OP. Don't feel bad about the man who did it not passing his probation. He's hopefully learned that actions have consequences, and as @Tortielady said, those consequences could have been even more serious.

wrongthinker · 24/09/2025 14:34

Don't feel bad for this young man. He needed to learn a lesson. Hopefully he'll look back one day and realise getting put straight was the best thing that could have happened to him.

Well, the restaurant/bar manager from the club came round along with the club president to apologise again and check all was ok with the window and with us. The staff member has been spoken to, is very shame faced and his mum is furious with him as well! He won’t be passing his probation, but I’m actually feeling really shitty about that.
They had a word with one of the playing members who is in the police, and that’s how the mum found out as they went round and had an informal chat. He is under no illusions that what he did could be taken further and could have been bad for him etc. Not sure that would happen in a city but it’s a small town!

So, he’s lost his job and had a fright from local police. He’s only 19, has learned a lesson but I’m the one feel crappy about it.

I understand the feeling crappy, as you’re a decent kind normal person.

Yes he’s young and foolish. But I have a teen son and I would want him to learn that his stupid actions have consequences too, before anything got further out of hand. He’s learned a lesson in respect and thinking about other people and the effect his actions have.

BeserkingTuesday · 24/09/2025 12:17

As others have said, Golf Club, Licensing Authority and Police. You won't get action but the record is there. The next time it might be a neighbour complaining about noise but it all builds up and could lead to restrictions on the licence - hitting the club's bottom line. You'll soon get action from the golf club.

Just read update - don't feel guilty - you did the right thing by reporting and it would appear so did the club.

Gossipisgood · 24/09/2025 10:40

You need to get a window lock that stops your windows being opened any further when you have them open that way you can be safe in the knowledge it won't happen again. It must of been pretty scary at that time of the morning.

Tortielady · 24/09/2025 09:15

I understand why you feel bad about the outcome, but as someone who was burgled three times over at a previous address, I'm sorry you're upsetting yourself over it. The young man in question is lucky he only had you and his employer to deal with. The police could have been involved (and still could.) Instead of you, he could have met a brick outhouse with the temper of a hung-over honey-badger. Things could have gone horribly badly for him in ways he might never have recovered from. As it is, he's failed his probationary period and will have to start again, looking for a job in an area where there might not be many options. But he's alive and well and might not be stuck with a criminal record - many would say he's got off lightly.

Where are YOU living that a woman working in her own living room, late at night, with a window open is in the wrong for a man getting pissed and encroaching on her property!!!??? That she’s out of order for wanting to express how much it scared her in a seemingly safe place a mere hours later?

Agree. Some of the comments are totally bonkers.

Yes OP, totally your fault, simple bars on the window would have prevented this happening!🙄

Not bars... a fly screen!!

Yes, it’s 100% her fault that some random drunk decided he had the right to open her partially opened window and trespass on her property - perhaps she should just put metal grills on all her windows and be done with it 🙄tell me you’ve missed the point without telling me you’ve missed the point. Nobody has the right to walk on to your property and touch your open window much less stick their head through it. Regardless of whether the window is open or not?! Someone get OP stripped naked and a let’s all shout ‘shame’ at her as she walks the streets of her local town 🤷🏼‍♀️

Exactly, although I am surprised no has yet berated op for not checking on the wee twat as 'he could have been vulnerable being so drunk, how 'unkind' of op to only think of herself and her dc....🙄

LivelyFinch · 24/09/2025 08:29

I'm glad the golf club took it seriously and sorry you've had a derailer on this thread.

Fly screens are fixed over the window completely covering the window opening. You cannot physically pop your head through them. It is mesh installed over the opening. You cannot stick your head through solid mesh.

No one has fly screens in the UK.

SodOffbacktoaibu · 24/09/2025 08:02

V glad to read your updates. It's a good thing that there's a serious consequence for the young man. It's good for him to have a wake up call and good for society that some actual adults have acted and done the right thing.

We have a major problem with male behaviour in society. This is trivial compared to your incident but I too am a lone parent. I took my child out for a pub lunch at the weekend. Place I hadn't tried before. Only one table was occupied. We were looking at menus and my child was seated (I was about to sit).... And two men came over and told us loudly and abruptly that was their table. I apologised and said I didn't realise it was reserved and we moved. As we did so the other man laughed and said his friend was a liar. So just a bit of a laugh to make a mum and her kid get out of their way. I was so pissed off with their behaviour we left. I'm not putting up with it. It's trivial I know but it's horrible.

Hopefully that young man won't grow up to be a dick like that or worse.

These are the types of windows I have. They can swing right out; very very common in the UK.

Hardly anyone has fly screens. I’ve literally never been in the house of someone with fly screens, in my whole life here.

I don’t need to do anything. If I leave my windows open while I’m out or asleep and someone burgles me then that’s because I gave them an easy way in. If I’m sitting in my living room, music playing and lights on, with my window open an inch or so, then I’m doing literally nothing wrong.

Random drunk stuck his head through my open living room window and scared me senseless

It's not victim-blaming at all! She can still have the window open with the mesh fly screen on it!!!

Is it 'victim-blaming' to tell people to lock their house doors at night?

Edited

It’s just not really a thing that’s needed here and would feel very odd to have fly screens.

The most you might get is that in the four weeks of summer we get, some people might hang a temporary thing up with strands of plastic to keep flies out if you have a particularly bad issue with them

ThatBlackCat · 24/09/2025 07:47

SimoneHere · 24/09/2025 07:41

How would a fly screen have prevented what happened? They aren’t a security measure. They are for keeping flys out, not drunk men. Ones we have used have just been velcroed on and would have popped if in the scenario described.

We don't have these screens in the UK. Millions of houses and bungalows and no fixed screens. It is just not a sensible suggestion.

Christ almighty! Wtf should OP or anyone else do this? Smacks of victim blaming, the OP is perfectly entitled to have a window open, she’s explained why several times.
