Hey, everyone! Let’s all criticize how the widow of a murdered man grieves, because this definitely showcases our common decency and makes us look super-normal. 👍

The widow of a man who harassed and mocked George Floods daughter online for years, more than one playing the video of his murder and laughing. I guess we're supposed to believe he didn't make those jokes at home with her either. What you may see as lacking common decency is people having common sense. I think it's sad he lived such a cruel life, but I don't find it super unnormal for people to treat him as he treated others (better actually - I haven't actually seen anyone on her detailing exactly how he died, mocking it detail by detail etc)

Do you remember a few years ago when cancel culture as a concept really got going, and people were cancelled/silenced/fired for saying objectively true things? I didn’t see that the left really had a problem with silencing free speech when they were the ones doing it, they just don’t like it now they’re on the receiving end. Seems they sowed the wind, now they’re reaping the whirlwind.

You're misinterpreting cultural pushback for silencing or cancelling. I don't recall the government getting anyone fired and everyone who claimed to be "silenced" has had multiple podcast deals, stand up specials, basically a whole new career on being "silenced" by which they mean cultural pushback.

PreciousTatas · 22/09/2025 13:37

Strange.

I could have sworn there was a poll on this thread earlier this morning?

TheExcitersblowingupmymind · 22/09/2025 13:13

Trump is now pressing for his political opponents to be prosecuted..Well on the road to a dictatorship.

GoodTimesNoodleSalad · 22/09/2025 12:43

People who stated basic biological facts were cancelled/fired for stating them.

If the Trump administration is putting pressure on ABC or any other network, it doesn’t necessarily follow that they’re incapable of resisting such pressure. If ABC had considered Kimmel’s comments to be worthy of defending, they could have done so. They chose not to.

It’s interesting that you use the word ‘payback’ - it infers you agree that the left is receiving a dose of its own medicine and doesn’t much like it! Personally I think censorship/cancel culture is a bad idea regardless of whether it’s done by the left or the right.

Can you give examples of the ‘objectively true things’ people were cancelled for saying?

People aren’t on the receiving end of cancel culture, they are on the receiving end of illegal government interference in free speech. There’s a big difference. I’m amazed some people can’t see it, or they feel so aggrieved they are willing to accept a government acting illegally if they can get some payback.

You mean Trump speak ie when he talked about how women like being grabbed on ‘the pussy.’ I agree.

With a sickening letter and illustration just to make his point.

There's free speech and then there's offensive, vitriolic gutter talk. Less of that would be appreciated by decent people

HostaCentral · 22/09/2025 11:33

I haven't read previous posts, but I found the whole thing chilling. The dignified solution would have been to have a quiet family ceremony, not turn his death into a circus of weird evangelical and political theatre. Calling him a martyr is medieval, like his views.

It's not a stretch from this to Handmaids Tale. America is a mess.

TheExcitersblowingupmymind · 22/09/2025 11:00

There's no such thing as free speech in America as Hesgeth shifting the goal posts for journalists asking questions in the Pentagon.
Anything Trump doesn't like is labelled fake news.
Journalists not being able to freely ask questions in the Whitehouse press room,if anything awkward comes up it's shut down immediately.
It's only free speech if Despot Trump agrees with whats being said.
Yes tragic a man got murdered but people get shot in America every day.
Pity there wasn't the same outpouring when Sandy hook occured.

GoodTimesNoodleSalad · 22/09/2025 10:46

MrsSkylerWhite · 22/09/2025 08:26

Should that not work both ways? Yet it seems anything goes as far as Trump, Vance and indeed Turning Point are concerned. People who have the audacity to put forward a different view are increasingly being silenced or even picked up on the street.
Doesn't that concern you?

I can't believe the mental gymnastics people are going through on this thread to deny that it's happening.

That’s happening more and more on threads these days.

"I have read some place that the networks were 97% against me, again, 97% negative, and yet I won and easily [in last year's election]," the president said.
"They give me only bad publicity [and] press. I mean, they're getting a licence. I would think maybe their licence should be taken away."

ABC suspended Kimmel and industry people say it was a convenient excuse to get rid of a struggling presenter with very poor ratings.

You do know what Kimmel said right? he commented on how hard the right (ie Trump, Vance) was working to paint Tyler Robinson as being from the left and how quickly that started doing so.

Taking him off the air is silencing him for what?

That is not consequences, That is censorship by the government. And that’s unconstitutional.

Edited

My mistake. I meant that the government interfering in free speech is unconstitutional. Which is what they did to Kimmel.

Bernadinetta · 22/09/2025 07:35

Absolutely bemused by the fireworks going off when Erika, Vance and Trump entered the stage.

Indeed. I think anyone saying "she's just a grieving widow, she was just sharing a message of forgiveness" needs to ask themselves why fireworks went off.

It was a weird combination of election night win celebrations and evangelical Christian conference, Hillsong style. If people can't acknowledge the strange and sinister undertones of this without getting a dig in at the "far left", there's no hope for them.

TooTooMuchEverything · 22/09/2025 08:45

GoodTimesNoodleSalad · 22/09/2025 08:23

If ABC had thought Kimmel worth defending, they would have done so. But they didn’t.

Freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from consequences, right?

I agree with so many on this thread that people have become so entrenched in their politics that they are becoming rotten with hate from the inside.

We should actively encourage disagreement and diversity of thought and opinions. Explorations of how to improve our society by taking the best of ideas without being held back by dogma.

OP leave her to grieve in her own way. There was no need to start a thread so full of hate. You have encouraged others to articulate similar. It’s not great. Don’t be that person.

Thank you for such a well written post.

repeating it doesn’t make it true.

You also have JD Vance and those on the right encouraging mass doxxing of people not joining in on this ridiculous public mourning of a racist and misogynist. Who cares if he attacked their humanity everyday to grift a loving, they're suddenly not entitled to free speech and should be ratted out. Coming from people who mocked George Floyd and others disgustingly and still do btw. Any accusations of an echo chamber or closed ears on the left is always an admission from the right.
