Fucking Gross Adverts

It started with little kids on the toilet with their pants round their ankles, holding their noses.

Then there was the one with a woman farting at work and then scurrying to the bathroom clutching a bog roll.

I think I reached the nadir last night when I was subjected to an advert for razors which treated me to the sight of a man bending down with his back to the camera and his hand under his dressing gown, shaving his sack and crack.

I mean, that might not be the nadir. Maybe next time they’ll drop the dressing down, and I can feast my eyes on his arsehole winking at me while it gets a short back and sides.

At this rate I’ll have to clear all the crap off my kitchen table and start eating like a civilised human again.

AIBU, or are adverts getting increasingly foul?

Maybe some posters here need to unclench and release the gas a bit themselves 💨

Agree! There are some very prim people around!

A lot stuff on screens is grim these days. We're increasingly back to books and printed newspapers in a bid to escape it all

I hear ya.

YANBU. There's a full body deodorant one which is rank too. Not to mention that it's a stupid, needless, and damaging product.

That might be the one that has just appeared in New Zealand. The theme is whatever you call them. An unnecessary product and I do wonder how safe it is for women especially after the talc revelations.

My dad used to get the rage at an advert with cartoon sailors in a gravy boat singing In The Gravy. He said it popped into his mind at Sunday lunch and made him feel sick.

My mum (who's 79 now) used to rant about the adverts for washing powder, featuring ecstatic housewives enthusing about how white it got their whites, and how bright it made their coloureds. Like anyone with a half a life seriously gave a shit.

Thinandbare · 21/09/2025 13:09

My daughter and I both commented on the razor one. The close up of someone’s stubbly pubic area.

They think they’re being ‘authentic’ and people will appreciate it. In reality though, we all know we fart and stuff, we’re not embarrassed, but it doesn’t mean we want to see it on TV

It's that hotel advert with the sweaty, snoring lady that gets me.

I find the Pepto Bismol advert strangely uplifting though.

Oh good Lord yes! I don't want to think who has been in a bed before I have!!

I think its largely indicative of the increasing reduction in boundaries, privacy and standards.

All very boring to some people but I think it has an emotional impact on how we interact and manage ourselves as a society. We're pretty emotionally incontinent, lacking in resilience, very poor MH, this isnt because we're all more in tune or in touch with our emotional health, its quite the opposite, and it might not seem connected but a breaking down of boundaries and taboos is part of that in my view.

Humans need structure and rules. We're just big children after all.

100% this.

Bring back the R Whites lemonade and flake ads, all is forgiven! 🤣

"How is it undignified to discuss periods? Is it undignified to discuss migraines, or a bad back?

I'm glad the world has moved on - for some of us."

That's a ridiculous comparison and you know it. A period is a function that involves the discharge of bodily fluids.
No one is complaining about the inclusion of a woman saying "ouchie, I've got cramps" so not comparable to head or back ache. It's imagery relating to body fluids, unnecessary close ups of crotches and underwear.

It's more comparable to other bathroom related bodily functions. Almost all of the population do it, it's normal, no one should be ashamed. But it's still private and no one wants or needs to see a realistic representation of related products.

We all know how toilet paper works for example. An ad might say this loo roll is thick and gentle but ultra strong and absorbent. We understand, thanks for the info. We don't need to physically see something brown on the flipping paper to understand 😆

honeylulu · 21/09/2025 13:00

The full body deodorant ones are really ick. Close ups of sweaty bits with "hilarious" slang words. FGS if you stink, go and have a wash, don't make it worse with a mixture of sweat and artificial scent!

Natalie Portman perfume adverts I agree are awful too. Dancing on the dinner table with her mucky feet and trashing designer dresses jumping in the sea "for love". One of the earlier ones showed her slapping and shouting at her partner- oh yes, domestic violence, how romantic!

One of my favourite adverts was the Chicken Tonight one with the panda falling off a wall and going "ooo me conkers!" I used to laugh my head off, although I've no idea why a panda was advertising chicken casseroles.

I always wonder how the actors feel doing that and whether their soul is dying inside as they clutch their arse and gurn at the camera

"3 years at drama school and massive debt for this"

"I went to RADA FFS!'

I used to work in a call centre and a few of my colleagues were bit part actors who did adverts. I am just imagining his colleagues in the call centre ripping the piss out of him.

I'm also wanting to know the name of the copywriter and art director so I can stan them! 🤣

Even Tilda Swinton is doing one and I thought she was a serious actor.

Serious for the spondoolicks, as my dad would say.

I have absolutely no idea how on earth this one is allowed on the tv - it hairs me feel so sick

If anything, I might have wondered why they didn’t just use plain water, give that the object of the exercise was to show how much liquid the product can absorb. It never occurred to me that red was needed, to point out what we all already knew, i.e. that the product was designed to absorb menstrual blood.

It’s like sex in dramas. We all know what sex is. We can watch them close the bedroom door or just sink into an embrace. We don’t have to see naked arses thrusting. We know what blood is, we know what menstruation is, I just don’t want to look at realistic used sanitary pads or tampons when I’m relaxing on my sofa after work.

the women with their pee pants going to a club
i guess incontinence is out in the open that's for sure

If she's so worried about her soggy Tena, surely she could just change it for a new one!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/09/2025 12:50

Joyunlimited · 21/09/2025 12:27

But did you object during all the years they showed blue liquid rather than red?

I assume they want to demonstrate how much liquid (more than you might expect) the pads can absorb. We don’t need to see whether loo paper will wipe off poo.

As I'm retired I get the dubious pleasure of the daytime adverts, light on period products and perfume, heavy on funeral insurance and products for urinary tract and vaginal dryness problems. No wonder I watch the BBC so much

😂!

I draw the line at the BBC though 😁 .

I watch quite a lot of YouTube. I pay, £16 per month, so I don’t have to see any adverts. I think it’s worth it!

BaskervilleOldFace · 21/09/2025 12:48

user043857398 · 21/09/2025 08:23

We've always muted the ads since I was a kid so I've never really seen them. They're not something you watch, they're like an excuse for a tea break.

Why do you watch them? Why do you leave the sound on?

Exactly. Turn the mute on and read your phone/get a drink until the programme restarts. No need to subject yourself to this repellent garbage.

LostPEKitAgain · 21/09/2025 12:47

The dominos ad with the guy shaving his bits. Seems unnecessary when you’re selling pizza 🙄I wouldn’t have minded if this was on an adult program but it was on C5 streaming for a documentary about the fire of London which I thought would be useful for my 7y/o as she was covering in school.

AmazonianWarrior · 21/09/2025 12:44

Catsknowbest · 21/09/2025 07:52

Nope you're not being unreasonable...they are getting out and out worse! Even the period ones are going too far now 🙄

And the ones about incontinence pads!

I absolutely hate these graphic advertisements. I just don't want to see that sort of thing on my TV when I am eating. Does anyone remember when advertisements were fun and entertaining? OK I am going back a bit but just a few examples📧

Joan Collins & Leonard Rossiter - Cinzano
Lorraine Chase - Campari
The Nestle Gold Blend series - will they, won't they?
Smash
Renault - Papa and Nicole
The Oxo Family

I remember all of them. I was just thinking about the old Bodyform advert, catchy song and I always thought how much I loved her pink dress, doesn't need to be any more graphic than that.

We all know blood is on period pads. We don’t need to be shown other people’s bodily fluids. Anymore than I would bring my own used period pad or tampon into the living room to show to my family and guests. The whole liberal “this is educational” argument is such a red herring.

SophW89 · 21/09/2025 12:39

Totally agree. Makes me feel a bit uncomfortable (appreciate the point of the ad is to apparently normalise it, but I don't want it in my face when watching tv)
