Should I tell Tesco I basically stole £300 from them?

Just checked my banking app and had around £300 more than I was expecting. Turns out that one of our shops was cancelled by dh but it still showed up for delivery. Husband wasn’t in so son accepted the order AND we got the refund. So it’s actually funny because our texts shows us getting our wires crossed. Husband thought I had unilaterally decided to reorder. He asked “so you did decide to do the shop in the end” and I answered in the affirmative as I very coincidentally happened to go into M and S for some bits my daughter wanted to try. And it was that I thought he was referring to. I thought her was being sexy cause dd went a bit overboard with the cookies, dips etc

Anyway, it’s been about three weeks. I guess this has slipped through.

Wouls you tell Tesco? I’m surprised that the idea of being sneaky flashed in my mind.

It was a pricier shop as DH ordered a few nicer bottles of wine to enjoy for a family event.

This has happened to me 3 times , not cancelled my end but the supermarket made the mistake on 3 large shops.
I wouldn't dream of saying a word...why would you ask on here though...just decide for yourself

No. I can see why people might choose to think that.

But I think laws are.meant to protect us all, from contract law to criminal law.

My point is that a lot of people are wriggling around trying to justify something that is wrong (Tesco are nasty, Tesco make too much money, it's karma, etc).

And yet we would be (rightfully) livid if men went "her skirt was short", "she sh*gged all my mates" "it was only a bit of fun".

I chose an offence that I thought MNers might relate to, and therefore make them think.

It seems some people can hold two opposing views at the same time 😥

This cannot be serious. 🤦‍♀️😭

Thefrenchconnection1 · 19/09/2025 22:57

Pay it forward in some way. Even if its £30

No, it isn't. And even if it was, there are worse things than theft. But it isn't theft anyway, there was no attempt to defraud or deliberately deprived Tesco of anything. I don't believe for an instant that the virtue signallers on here wouldn't do exactly the same thing in OP's position. They just enjoy pretending to be perfect.

I would contact the shop immediately because I am not a thief. Use any excuses you want but this is theft. We are not all wallowing in the gutter like you.

JFC!

I believe I have just witnessed sexual assault being on par with a technical error by a company worth multi millions of £s???

Same, can’t believe what I’m reading 😭🤣🤣

NurtureGrow · 19/09/2025 22:56

I definitely wouldn’t tell Tesco, and I am a law abiding person.. but they made a mistake, there was a confusion (not yours.) If you tell them, in my opinion the person at Tesco will think you are mad!

The thing is OP didn’t want that food, was proactive and cancelled the order in good time, the cancellation was accepted and they still delivered the food. The food she didn’t want. Bad customer service if she then has to pay for the shopping she didn’t need/want and just put up with it even though she now has too much food/not the right food.

samarrange · 19/09/2025 22:54

If it will make you feel better, wait about 10 days, then go into the shop and tell the people at the customer service desk what happened. As PP have noted they almost certainly have no way to claw it back, and it would probably take them all day to process it if they could. So now someone from Tesco will have told you to forget about it, which makes it an official windfall. Put £20 in the collecting tin that they sometimes have standing there. Job done.

I know, it's truly outrageous. I refuse to believe that poster was listing in good faith. Nobody is quite that dumb, they just want a reaction.

I phoned them in a similar situation when I realised they’d refunded but still delivered and they said there was no mechanism for taking the payment now. Said they used to be able to take payment but no longer the case so it was free

FitatFifty · 19/09/2025 22:50

Do Tesco chase people/give automatic refunds when they have overcharged. Nope.

AliceMaforethought · 19/09/2025 22:50

It 100% is stealing. Keeping goods that are not yours is stealing.

The reason why I wouldn’t tell them is that you cancelled it. You shouldn’t have to pay for a shop that you cancelled. You can’t return the order now and they wouldn’t have taken the actual physical order back anyway. There actually isn’t a way to put this right that doesn’t leave you incorrectly out of pocket.

This. Why should you be out of pocket for their error? You cancelled it in time; they accepted that cancellation, so you technically shouldn't have to now pay for food you'd decided you didn't want.
If the food would be put to good use, eg, food bank donations then fine, I'd send it back, but it will simply be thrown away, which is so wasteful, so I wouldn't be able to do that either.

grumpygrape · 19/09/2025 22:49

Can someone please tell me where on the scale of Small, Medium, Large, Huge International Corporation, organisations it is OK to benefit from by not letting them know they have delivered £300 worth of goods which you ordered but then cancelled and have now not paid for ?

I happen to believe that men should not sexually assault women either and that parents should teach their children that.

If it's wrong, it's wrong.

Does that make me pious also?

Oh my word 🫣🫣🫣.

SquareElephant · 19/09/2025 22:49

On this thread there seems to be a lot of people thinking it is ok to steal if the target of your theft is rich. They are all thieves just with negotiable targets of their theft.

Did you seriously compare not refunding Tesco to SEXUAL ASSAULT?! You are the one with a skewed moral compass. I don't think that you can compare actual shoplifting to sexual assault, and what the OP did wasn't shoplifting. Good Lord.

Are they both prohibited by law? Yes.

Can you pick and choose which laws you obey? No.

You seem to be happy to have laws enforced if they protect you, but ignore them if they protect others.

Give your head a wobble about your own moral compass, not mine. Or start explaining to men why they are subject to laws and you are not.

TheSwarm · 19/09/2025 22:40

I would call them, because the idea that I am a honest person matters to me.

Whether it's ma and pa's shop down the road or Tesco, it doesn't matter. It just comes down to whether you are fundamentally a decent, honest person or not.

CanSeeClearlyNowTheRainHasGone · 19/09/2025 22:39

NamelessNancy · 19/09/2025 22:25

And if the OP had binned the order? Or had no feidge space to keep ot cool? She told Tesco via the cancellation that she no longer wanted it. Maybe she realised she could no longer afford it? They should not expect to deliver an unwanted load of shopping and demand payment for it. (And they won't, it's clearly their error and nothing to do with OP).

If the OP did not want the order she was under no obligation to safeguard it and therefore under no obligation to pay for it. She could have put it outside and told them.

However she enjoyed thr use of it and gave the company no opportunity to recover it, or to gift it to her (which they may well still do).

I don't know why people are so happy to twist an argument to avoid the fundamental truth.

Do people not understand why laws exist and how they underpin a fair and just society?
