Is it as easy as mindset?

I was talking to a friend earlier this week and we got onto the conversation of mind set. My friend is rarely ill and will keep going with a cold etc. if something puts her to bed it has to be ‘really bad’
I don’t get ill much these days (but did when kids were little) I often find a cold will stop me at least for a couple of days. So if I can I’m in bed due to pounding headache, painful sinuses, fatigue/dizziness . I also suffer with back pain, migraine and tbh menopause.
is it as simple as mindset or do some people feel worse than others/get worse symptoms?
I grew up in this culture of people who struggle more with pain/illness are weak so I aways feel guilty if I’m ill.

I do think some of it comes down to mindset. Certain people are generally just stronger than others and are able to cope much better under stress so maybe generally not feel as unwell as someone who doesn't. There's also other factors like their general health. Some people eat really healthy so will have a better immune system than someone who rarely eats fruit and veg and then other people exercise a lot so will have better lungs and they will also cope better under stress etc...

There are too many variables to say whether it 100% comes down to mindset or not.

No one will die if shit doesn’t get done, especially at the weekend.

Depends on your commitments. I have horses to feed and a dog to walk. I have dragged myself away from the bathroom when I had D&V bug to sort them. I’m widowed, I have no family close by and no hubby to help. I can’t lie in bed feeling sorry for myself. Lucky you if you can but others can’t!

How do you have time to take to your bed when ill?! It’s a very old fashioned thing just to go to bed when ill. I suffer from chronic sinusitis, migraine, a back injury, an old rotator cuff injury and I currently have an avulsion fracture. I have a house to run, animals to look after, a child to look after and a full time job. I keep going. I pay for private treatment for my shoulder, back and fracture thanks to the no hope service being so hopeless. Only time I take to my bed like a maiden aunt is if I’ve a migraine. Mindset has a part to play. And I think, in general, as a population we are way too soft and lack resilience

Certain things you can manage with mindset e.g. a cold or headache - take Paracetamol and cups of tea and go about your day as best you can.

But in the 10 years when I suffered severe migraines I just had to yield to it and could barely lift my head off the pillow, unless to vomit. Same with 'flu - your body aches, limbs are weak and you have to take to your bed to wait it out.

Likely a bit of both. There’s actually a really interesting book on this topic!

Do you like her OP? She doesn’t sound very pleasant.

We have been friends a long time , she’s funny and good company, she has been hugely successful in life which has led to some snobbery and judgement of others. She has a hard side to her that she didn’t use to have.
I enjoy her company i n small doses but couldn’t live with her now.

The conversation about mindset? Yes it started from a friend of hers who’s always ill (in her opinion) but I don’t know if she feels that way about me.
Shes the same about mental health, a mutual friend of ours has suffered with her mental for twenty years and she has expressed frustration at friends inability to get out of it. She was very approving when i developed severe anxiety (after a frightening experience) at how I worked hard to overcome it/manage it.

So she was talking In a general sense rather than directing it at you?

Honestly no, usually we meet with two other friends and we all take a turn to offload. My offload is usually more about dh or ds! . Another friend is going through a nasty divorce I’d say last time we met she talked the most.

i don’t really like talking about it as it defines me enough already. I don’t even talk about it much at home anymore.

Edited

autienotnaughty · 20/09/2025 06:51

I must have subconsciously known something was brewing. Last night I started with my first cold in about a year!! (No doubt thanks to seeing my snotty nieces a few days ago)
Headaxhe , sinus pain, blocked ears and nose, dizziness, fatigue . Oh the joys!

And if you’re absolutely honest with yourself, when you do infrequently get together, do you find yourself (understandably) talking a lot about all your chronic conditions op?

Yes close friend but we don’t see loads of each other due to distance. I am reflecting now does she include my chronic pain condition ?? I assumed she meant general viruses but now I’m second guessing.

GotMarriedInCornwall · 19/09/2025 21:54

The last time I had a day off work for illness (besides mandated absence for Covid) was 2012 when I had norovirus.
I get regular migraines, but luckily can still work through them - I appreciate this isn’t the case for everyone.
If I have a cold, I would dose up on medication and keep going, but I’d have to get up for the school run and as a teacher, I’d still be expected to set cover work so unless I’m literally at death’s door, it’s less stressful to just go to work.

CobbleWobble · 19/09/2025 20:32

Year ago, a roommate of mine made a huge thing about never being sick, never getting a vomiting bug, mind over matter etc.

DH was a teacher and came down with noro one winter. He got, then I got it. Roommate kept on and on about mind over matter, she wouldn't get sick etc etc.

The next morning I left the sick bowl and a bottle of water outside her room after I heard her chucking up all night.

So yeah, it's bullshit spouted by lucky idiots.

atinydropofcherrysherry · 19/09/2025 20:26

Mindset is to know the difference between being lazy waking up sharply and vigorously in the morning than having real depression - that is the mindset, knowing what is what. Being seriously physically ill and needing bed, that is not a mindset, lol

GagMeWithASpoon · 19/09/2025 20:23

It really depends on the cold, and on some extent, the person (as in their immune system rather than mind set).

A normal cold,I don’t even bother with paracetamol most times.

A shitty (or sinusy ) one where my head feels like it weighs 5 tonnes, I can’t breathe, my eyes are leaky, ears blocked , shivers , I’m dizzy all the time etc. if I can, I sleep it off. If I have to go into work , dose myself up , load on painkillers, try and make it through the day and crash when home. A few times I was so run down I got delightful things like conjunctivitis or tonsillitis as a bonus.

Just like covid. One time I was delirious in bed and even my hand touching my skin was painful, one time I didn’t even knew I had it (just a few sneezes here and there) and only found out because of weekly testing.

Nothing to do with mindset.

atinydropofcherrysherry · 19/09/2025 20:23

well no.
you seem catch no just colds, but whole bacterial infections with fever, etc - that is different

Doone22 · 19/09/2025 20:19

The same virus affects people differently. For some it will upset their stomach but for others it will settle on their chest and the same virus will cause headaches and temperature in other people. I can't stand having a head cold but can work quite happily with a chest cold.

Fruitlips · 19/09/2025 20:06

For you. It's not incapacitating for you

isn’t that the entire thrust of the OP?

RuttleTuttle · 19/09/2025 20:02

incognitomouse · 19/09/2025 19:42

At a cold. A cold is not something you should be laid up in bed feeling all sorry for yourself about. God, I'd be forever languishing in bed the amount of colds and bugs that come into this house. It's not something that is incapacitating.

For you. It's not incapacitating for you.

Do you actually think that everybody in this world has as strong an immune system as you do? Or has the strength to fight these things off like you do?

So many judgey people on this thread. Who, funnily enough, don't think it's down to mindset when it's something that they suffer from, like migraines.

My DH occasionally gets a migraine. Lies down for a couple of hours, off it goes, up he gets. Whereas I have a friend who gets absolutely debilitating migraines, can't remember the name of her DH or DC. Two days in a darkened room. But sure, it's mindset 🙄

Is this a close friend? Someone who is supportive?
or more of a friend you see irregularly for the odd catch up?

OP your friend who always struggles through illness with a positive mindset may one day be struck down with a bad dose of flu which renders her unable to leave her bed for a few days. In which case she will explain that this was the worst illness ever and despite her incredibly high pain threshold she was, this time, entirely justified in being bedridden.

It is impossible to point out to such people that people experience illnesses to differing degrees and some people at some times suffer more with illness than others. As well as possibly some people being less mentally resilient. People can be very invested in the concept of their own superiority.

That is exactly what happens the small handful of times she is ill

Ha ha. "Mindset definitely plays a part, except for this condition that I suffer with!"

😆

I don’t suffer from migraines (thank goodness! In fact can’t even remember last time I had a headache!)
