To think there is some kind of weird push towards the far right?

I’m the first to admit that I am not the best informed - I prefer to keep my life stress free and simple as much as possible, and don’t have a TV, don’t read papers, and only listen to the radio when I’m driving (which is quite often). For my own mental health I prefer to live in my own little bubble.

But even with my limited exposure to media, I’ve noticed on Radio 2, both on the news and Jeremy Vine’s show, Reform are being given so much air time considering their paltry amount of MPs, the polls are being discussed regularly even though we’re years from an election. More than once listening to the radio I’ve thought the way they’re talking makes it sound like Reform winning the next election is a done deal, and thought to myself that this is how self fulfilling prophecies happen.

My algorithms on FB are seriously messed up. Despite having never been remotely interested in anything in the least bit right wing, all of a sudden I’m getting endless posts from knuckle dragging ‘patriot’ groups that I don’t even follow, with really horrendous and openly racist comments, thousands of them, which somehow FB are allowing to remain even though any kind of hate speech has always been censored on there. Why are these posts suddenly being allowed and pushed in my face?

Alongside this there seems to be a new story pretty much every day about the latest scandal involving Labour (again reported by the BBC), ok these things aren’t great although compared to the Tories’ rap list from their last spell in government, are fairly small fry really. It seems like there’s an active push for people to rebel away from the left just as the far right are gaining momentum.

Has anyone else noticed this or am I talking shite?

I don't know about a "push", but it is worrying how many people don't seem to understand how algorithms work or can't recognise AI. There's a lot of people very angry about things they can't even seem to define well.

KnittyNell · 16/09/2025 09:11

I will be voting for Reform, the only party that will get me to the ballot box.

Have you thought about what has made people so disillusioned with the left that they are gravitating toward the right?

There’s a difference between the right and the far right. I’m also sick of this left vs right rhetoric, constantly.

Define ‘far right’.

@FirstCuppais on the right track. This has been occurring for at least 15 years or more. It’s just becoming much more visible now. It’s my belief that the aim has been to create destabilisation in the Western world using existing pressure points such as religion, immigration and sex rights. To do this, they utilise troll bot farms to influence public opinion across multiple platforms. The primary countries behind this are Russia, China, Belarus, North Korea and possibly Iran.

I agree but also there is no denying our streets do look and feel very different in the bigger towns and cities so it is no surprise people are starting to question if this is a situation they are comfortable with.

I posted earlier with an incorrect link. I linked a bill that has already been published in 2024, which also impacts send families, one's like mine who ended up with no school that could meet need and having to educate away from schools. This bill does not address EHCP.

But I need to address some inaccuracies in your post here.

Without an EHCP a school or LA cannot be held to account over education provision so it is incorrect to state that removing EHCPs does not remove legal rights.

Judicial review can be brought, as a last resort, against an LA that fails to make the provision under an EHCP and that is a powerful tool for families to ensure that their children receive the education they need. Without this then they do not have the ability to enforce provision,

I also find your idea that overstretched teacher's can replace EHCP provision for children frankly laughable, have you asked them what they think of that?

Labour has already reduced choices for SEN families by it's introduction of 20% VAT on private schools. Families who might have chosen smaller classrooms for their children who can't cope in large noisy environment have been impacted by this already.

Many children simply just cannot function in busy classrooms with any amount of support.

Removal of EHCP does not mean removal of rights if it is replaced by a different mechanism confer those rights

If when the white paper comes out in October they not outlined how those legal rights will be conferred then I will whole heartedly agree with you that they are not doing the right thing.

Wouldn't it be much better for children and families for them to be able to access their needs in a way that wasn't so formally process driven and reduced the need for appeals and judicial reviews?

And if you re-read my comments about support for additional needs in schools, you will see.I was advocating for a total overhaul of the education system - because like everything else, it is broken beyond measure. I'm not arguing for simply tacking additional SEN support onto existing teacher workloads, I'm talking about a complete overhaul which would make things better for pupils and teachers.

As for private schools - the VAT issue shouldn't even be a factor for SEN parents because mainstream should be inclusive and where a child does need to be in specialist provision then the places should be available and paid for by the state!

Good grief - its no wonder they can't make any improvements when people are shouting that proposals won't work before they even know what the proposals are!

Russia/Putin, russian bots etc
They did it with 2016 USelections/Cambridge Analytica, they did it with Brexit, last Romanian elections etc etc they will do it again and again
The aim is to destabilise the West

Immigration is another tools being used to destabilise the west.

BleinhamOrange · 16/09/2025 09:03

BloominNora · 16/09/2025 08:19

No - of course not. But that poster is attending protests against immigration because of an incident of sexual assault by an asylum seeker and a feeling of 'intimidation'.

But sexual assault and violence against women and girls is overwhelmingly committed by white, British born men, and the immigration protesters include a lot of domestic and sexual abusers. Two in five of the people arrested at last years protests had existing reports of DA.

So I was just wondering why they don't feel the same about white men and why they are happy to protest with them, given the higher risks.

Even if only one British man in a thousand committed rape and one in five immigants committed rape then it would still be the case that the majority of rapes were committed by British men. Really yours is a nonsense argument, especially when we can exclude the immigrants.

lifeturnsonadime · 16/09/2025 08:54

BloominNora · 16/09/2025 08:29

Because the possible changes have literally just been announced and don't actually say that they are definitely getting rid of EHCPs...the plan will follow and will go out for consultation. Making these announcements is a way of gauging initial opinion while also doing other 'soft' consulation to help develop the plan.

That plan will then be released for formal consultation. Or would you rather they just develop it on the back of a fag packet without gauging opinion.

Getting rid of EHCPs does not equal the removal of legal rights. It is just the current mechanism by which those rights are conferred and they have said they will not reduce legal rights. They want to change the mechanism because the current one does not work for children, parents, schools or health services.

Wait and see what the plan looks like - if you still don't think it will work then use all of the levers you can to contribute and reply to the consultation, but don't discount it until you know whether it is better or not.

And I want to see schools as more inclusive exactly so those with more complex needs can receive more help - if fewer children with moderate needs, need additional support because it is automatically provided in schools or the school system is more attuned to diverse needs, then it frees up resources so those with more complex needs receive better and more timely support.

Does the OP mention right wing or does she refer to the far right? Why are you purposely conflating the two?

The Overton Window has shifted so much that JK Rowling is now been accused of being "far right" and our leader thinks some women can have penises, so I am curious as to OPs opinions on what she considers the bog standard right and what should be done about them and their thoughts (this includes the "far right").

Edited, I posted an incorrect link.

Edited

The white paper is due to be published in October - look me up and we can have a discussion about it then.

I may disagree entirely with what they are planning, or it could be the best thing to happen to SEND support for a generation - who knows?

My guess is it will be much like the children's social care reforms - with some positives and some negatives.

And maybe check your own bias and understanding before you call people ignorant as you did prior to your edit. I have a pretty indepth knowledge of the system from both a personal and professional view point. Just because I questioned your view, does not make me ignorant 🙄

Oioisavaloy27 · 16/09/2025 08:51

I can't understand why someone would even want the contemplate voting for Reform who want to remove your human rights, a lot of people don't bother reading through their policies they just jump on the bandwagon.

Whilst I can understand certain media outlets coming out to bat for Farage, I can't understand the likes of the Guardian and the BBC overdoing Reform's coverage to the extent that they are. It's like the British media in its entirety is hellbent on us having a fascist government (and before any Reform supporter comes squawking at me, I didn't say "Nazi," I said "fascist" which is exactly what they are. You want to support it, own it, and stop pretending its anything other than what it is.)

Yeah, I was wondering about this too. Then I realised- journalism is basically dead. The days of there being real investigative reporting, nuance and an attempt at neutrality are gone.
The BBC like the lot of the media outlets are all about clicks. I don’t think that it’s hit me until now.
I know media and press has always been skewed a bit towards certain parties but now it’s like the ONLY agenda is traffic.
I’m shocked too OP at the way BBC are pushing Reform like they are the inevitable next step.
And since social media became so ubiquitous the world has gone fucking nuts. Trump, Brexit, now this pushing of fascism. It’s scary.
( I don’t include the fight for sex based rights in this- that was a grass roots fight and is about actual human rights- the opposite of fascism)

WandaWomblesaurusWonka · 16/09/2025 01:13

Have you thought about what has made people so disillusioned with the left that they are gravitating toward the right?

By all accounts people are also disillusioned with the Tory party which cannot be construed as leftie. Op is talking about a pull to the far right and this is a very important discussion to have at this moment.

ILikeDinosaurs · 16/09/2025 08:47

Unfortunately we have sleepwalked into this situation. Over recent years the billionaires and tech nerds have been organising especially in America to overthrow democracy and create a fascist right-wing state. It's already happened in America and now they are trying to do it in the UK too - cue Elon Musk speaking at the white nationalists march telling US to get rid of OUR elections?!!!

tramtracks · 16/09/2025 08:46

According to government data Foreign nationals (immigrants) make up around 9-11% of the UK population but account for about 15-23% of sexual offence convictions, with conviction/arrest rates for such crimes about twice as high as for the UK-born population.

Clearly, in terms of numbers - uk born nationals will have the highest figure for sexual offences. However the above data shouldn’t be dismissed as irrelevant, especially if the offences are geographically highly concentrated.

BloominNora · 16/09/2025 08:45

BluePeril · 16/09/2025 07:55

Oh, those white men who usually mug and sexually assault people have been put out of a job by Johnny Foreigner, probably. That’s usually the rhetoric.

Like that satrical (I hope) clip of the guy being interviewed at one of the protests:

Protester: "They are coming over here and taking our jobs"
Reporter: "What qualifications do you have"
Protester: "None, they're taking those as well"

It would be hilarious if the sentiment wasn't so real.

"Foreigners can't be allowed to assault our women...that's our job" 🙄

Violence against women and girls is abhorent in all it's forms and I'm pissed off that people who have never had a thing to say about it now use it as an excuse to channel their racism and cause distress to women and children in the hotels or who live in places where protests are taking place.

The collective trauma of women and girls should not be a tool used by the far right to further their agenda and push to an authoritarian society which will erode our rights and safety even more.

summershere99 · 16/09/2025 08:43

Jumpingthruhoops · 16/09/2025 01:27

100% this! This is precisely the question everyone should be asking. But I suspect they won't.

Presumably the reason people are disillusioned with the left is because they want investment in the NHS, education and jobs. None of those things happened under a right wing government so it doesn’t make sense that they are now pushing for an even stronger right wing government as the answer. Unless the above aren’t the issues people care about and all they really want is to see an end to immigration and ‘the boats’. Or people have been manipulated into thinking that clamping down on immigration / illegal or otherwise will somehow usher in a golden age of prosperity in the UK.

Catsandcheese · 16/09/2025 08:41

One comment only - I find it interesting that so many defending Reform or far right policies like to blame the left for their new found opinions.
if you vote Reform you own that vote, you can’t blame other people or ideals especially when that potential Reform government delivers zero except more chaos.
That will be on you and your likeminded ‘patriots’

TheFrendo · 16/09/2025 08:40

IShouldNotCoco · 16/09/2025 01:19

It goes on circles.

Are you old enough to remember the BNP gaining popularity around 2009?

Nothing like this.

Reform's poll numbers are roughly equal to Tories & Labour combined.

One poll last week had Reform at 34%, Labour 19% & Tories 15%.
