Haiti is not so interested in foreign "help" as cholera was reintroduced to Haiti in October 2010. It is widely believed to be the result of contamination by infected United Nations peacekeepers deployed from Nepal who came to help after the disastrous earthquake earlier that year. Since then, cholera has spread across the country and become endemic.

I don't think that the opinions of the Haitian government (such as it is) are of any interest to Trump.

Speaking of 'the world's policeman', developments in Haiti - Trump has taken an interest and has said that countries that contribute a peacekeeper force will be viewed 'favourably' by the US, which as far as I can work out means Canadian and European boots on the ground in return for less punitive tariffs.

I do personally care op, as I’m sure do many others, however I’m not in a position to do very much to make a difference.

Not wanting the UK to get directly involved doesn't mean we don't care - quite frankly, 'western' countries cannot afford to keep gettting involved!

CoffeeCantata · 15/09/2025 15:50

Alicelucy9 · 15/09/2025 15:18

We did a fair bit of both! Britain used to be called the world's policeman! From about 1815 for a hundred years or so the navy intervened in a lot of global conflicts, suppressed piracy and things like that. There was also a squadron that intercepted slave ships, freed slaves and resettled them, as well as pressuring other countries to end slavery. As well as all the colonising and stealing stuff of course! History is complicated!

Amen to that! 😀

As an Irish person whose country was on the receiving end of Britain “barging in and helping everyone “. A huge amount of issues are hangovers from Britain’s vile and rampant colonisation -see Rwanda to name just one. “Barging in and helping everyone” is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve read about the British forces on here . Please read up on your history and the impact it has had globally .

Rwanda wasn't a British colony. It was German/Belgian. The Belgians were vile too.

CoffeeCantata · 15/09/2025 15:25

Pharazon · 15/09/2025 14:34

While I agree with the sentiment, it has to be said that Rwanda is Belgium's mess, not the UK's.

Germany and Belgium. Not our circus.

Ablondiebutagoody · 15/09/2025 15:22

What should we do? A crusade against the islamists? No thanks.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 15/09/2025 14:46

I thought we more colonised and stole stuff as opposed to trying to tell them how to run their own affairs.

So you think that phrase was meant literally? Ever heard of the the concept of irony?

I have an MA in history, thanks, from the days when degrees WERE degrees. I think you need to check your historical facts before being so rude, angry and arrogant on the basis of poor reading comprehension.

Read my post properly and calm down.

I thought colonsisation meant mposing political control and interfering with how things were done.

EasternStandard · 15/09/2025 14:51

I care but I’m not sure what people think the west should do for this conflict?

Tiredofwhataboutery · 15/09/2025 14:46

Alicelucy9 · 15/09/2025 12:00

I mean if you go far back enough we did, 'Pax Britannia' and all that.

Also, what Reese said

These problems need to be sorted by African countries - not the white saviors

This.

We are criticised for getting involved in conflicts overseas - some say it’s an imperialist attitude. You can’t have it both ways!

I sometimes read that ‘we shouldn’t see Africa as a basket case - it doesn’t need or appreciate Western intervention “. Africa (which is a large number of very different nations anyway) can manage its own affairs, thank you.”

Honestly - “The West”, whatever that may be - and if it ever was an entity, it’s de-stabilising rapidly- can’t do right for doing wrong.

I think particularly Britain’s days of barging in and trying to help everyone around the world are over. We haven’t got the defence budget, for one thing.

The UN needs to take the lead, not The West.

Honestly this entire thread can be summed up as "I know nothing about something therefore it doesn't exist." Or else it is just a roundabout dig at UK supporters of Palestine.

I think you’re imagining that.

Purpee · 15/09/2025 12:40

The West has made it very clear that it will only get involved in conflicts where there is a benefit to themselves. Even if that means supporting aggressors.

This conflict is a tragedy. It's unbelievably upsetting to read about. Most discourse I see around it involves using it as a political football, rather than being discussed in its own right. Including on this thread sadly. Or in charity appeals as a PP said.

WarmWasabi · 15/09/2025 12:32

I care but I fear I’m in the minority. Sudan isn’t as trendy as Palestine. A lot of people can’t see past their own nose.

YesImaman1100 · 15/09/2025 12:29

AirborneElephant · 15/09/2025 12:15

Ukraine and Gaza are wars of aggression. One country has invaded another or two countries have declared war. Yemen and Sudan are civil wars with different local factions fighting each other. The first type of war can sometimes be solved with a peace treaty and international sanctions, and sometimes needs other countries to to intervene to make it clear that further expansion will not be tolerated, eg Russia. But a civil war is almost impossible to fix. As others have said, what do you want to do when both sides are committing atrocities? If we did intervene what would we then do?

Edited

Some sense at last.

Africa is a continent. OP is talking about one country: Sudan.

I am referring to the whole continent, there are conflicts all over. Don't be so patronising.

Tipeetommeey · 15/09/2025 12:25

It doesn’t involve Jews so it doesn’t interest people and I’m afraid that’s the truth
