To ask what’s made you think “I’m getting old” recently?

I’ve noticed I’ve got a favourite seat in the living room and it’s accumulated a few of my things on and around it like my handbag, sweets, book, medication (because it’s the only thing that helps me remember to take it) a couple of letters that I opened and haven’t put away yet and a pack of baby wipes.
Dh is watching the game just now and I’ve sat down in my spot and accidentally knocked my medication off the armrest. I turned to dh and said “ do you know what would be handy, a little table next to me so I can put all my bits and bobs on” 🤦🏻‍♀️ my life flashed before my eyes before the words finished leaving my mouth. I’m 41 by the way how has nobody told me about this monumental moment.

Not knowing instinctively where to tap my card when paying

YES!! The awkward moment when you think you have chosen the correct position to hold your card over the machine, then (when the card hasn’t beeped after a few seconds), the staff member has to gently tell you you’re in the wrong area. I feel so old every time this happens 🤦🏼‍♀️.

When you are putting your year of birth in on a rolley thing online and you keep going and going and going.

Seeing how young my kids’ teachers are 😫

Francestein · 15/09/2025 00:32

@MrMucker - that’s so true. Makes me feel like a bulldog that’s stuck it’s face out the window of a fast-moving car.

MrMucker · 15/09/2025 00:28

It's when you use a Dyson hand dryer in the public restroom and the backs of your hands transform into a weird choppy sea of loose skin.

Gingganggoo · 15/09/2025 00:13

This is nothing! You can pull yourself up or sink into it - give yourself 20 years, THEN come back.

I’m considering a rollator, that makes me feel old. Or just disabled… I walk with a stick or crutches and i think a rollator with a seat might help me get out more, but it is very much a hard mental bridge to cross.

@justasking111definitely worth counting the days over, I hope you get lots of relief and it staves off the second hips deterioration for a while! I haven’t got in the bath in a very long time, DH would have to hoist me out I fear 😆

We have a lovely shower over our bath though 😭😭

Husband will put in a grab rail for me he said and there's nowhere to put the soap

Ditto ‘wipe back to front’ somewhere in my forties this became impossible

🤔 shouldn't that be 'wipe front to back' ?

So that you don't get any of the stuff that's being wiped in the front??

At 53 I have decided to return to study. It’s sooo hard because I have zero tech experience. Also everyone’s sooo young.

Happyjoe · 14/09/2025 23:57

Read on a card the other day, getting old means nobody chuckles when you fall over but rush to see if you're ok.

That and everything aches and it's rare that I like any new music.

@justasking111im waiting for my one to arrive! I think it was you that recommended to me on a thread where we were discussing our knackered hips!

Hello again. I thought of you when i typed it out. I'm having a new hip in six weeks and two days. Can't wait. So I'll be half walking after that. Trouble is the other hip is going fast. Really struggled to get into the bath this morning. It's the en suite shower for me now I think 😔

coxesorangepippin · 14/09/2025 23:52

I lied facing head down on a climbing net thing at the park today

That made me feel old

RaffiaworkAttachment · 14/09/2025 23:51

I have always been a dog person but two summers ago I started feeding two skeletal stray cats that were semi feral and belonged to a neighbour who moved in with her daughter and left them behind.

I have fallen in love entirely with these two cats. They utterly fascinate me. I got them tame over the space of a year and I love watching them. I love grooming them. I love feeding them and talking to them and washing their bedding and making their life as lovely as I can.

They are just boring black moggers but I wish they were young so I could have them all their lives.

I am a mad old cat woman!

That's your spine or hips, nerves doing a funny little jig. It's weird

Is it? I knew it was a ‘thing’ from seeing ‘old’ people’s toes so when I noticed this, I was like ‘oh no’ not this, please no! It’s just one thing after another… 😬😬

SKIN TAGS

I'll raise you seborrheic keratosis 😂

JudgeJ · 14/09/2025 23:39

At the weekly pub quiz, or indeed on lots of TV quiz shows, I not only don't now the answers to the 'music' questions, I'm no nearer when I hear the answers! My go-to answer for the '80s is Duran Duran, anything current is Taylor Swift who I was surprised to learn a year ago is a woman, having only ever heard the name.

Dontsayyouloveme · 14/09/2025 22:49

The most recent one… one of my toes has started doing its own thing.. it’s like it’s slowly turning over into its side… I just want it back to how my others are! 😟

I'll raise all your little tables and confess I bought a three tier trolley on wheels which is narrow and sits between an armchair and the sofa. I use all three tiers.

In my defence I'm waiting for two hip replacements on two sticks now so find it useful to have everything around me . I've a charging station for my phone, tablet, kindle. Hand cream, nail files, clear polish on the bottom shelf, plus my heat pad. Then charging station and cables for gadgets on middle shelf. Then drinks and biscuits, meds on top shelf.

I can push it out of the way when we have visitors.

I'm only 3 or 4 retirements away from being the oldest in my department. I'm not even THAT old..it's terrifying.

Oh god! You've just made me realise I am the oldest person in my department.

Edit - just remembered there is someone two years older than me.

Same here. I wear contact lenses to be able to see distances so I now have a pair of reading glasses to correct my already-corrected vision. Optician said it usually happens from age 35 (!) so i guess I should feel quite lucky I haven’t been touting a pair of glasses round my neck on a chain for the past 10 years.

Same here too. I'm 53 and over the last couple of years my close up vision has deteriorated; I only realised how bad it was getting when I had to get the woman in the post office to fill in a form for me because I couldn't see the bloody thing. I now have 3 different prescriptions and 2 different pairs of varifocals. Ridiculous! 😂

MatriarchCaz · 14/09/2025 23:23

Got offered help when I was putting my shop trolley back today, I looked at the girl and was like oh wow I am now old hahahha
