What’s the difference? Are the working class less than?

What’s the difference between the people at the last night of the proms and the people at the march today? Middle class vs working class? I am genuinely mystified. Tommy Robinson apart, he’s not the people’s person he thinks he is.

The difference is money !

Prom tickets start at £8 including booking fees.

One group is listening to music.

One group was calling for parliament to be dissolved,

And one person interviewed said Starmer should be shot.

In short:

What’s the difference? Are the working class less than?

Yes, you will see further upthread that I’ve commented that this was shocking. I hadn’t seem this when I posted.

i don’t condone violence on any side. .

So now you understand the difference between the Last Night of the Proms and a violent protest?

I think you have a point within grasp OP, but the comparison fails to make it.
I think there is validity in the view that the WC are considered 'lesser', and that this links to the protests because many disadvantaged people feel no one is listening to them, and that this extends to an administration they may have had reason to hope would be in their corner.
This has opened the door for right wing groups masquerading as WC saviours. Some WC people have followed them, and rather than consider what has driven them to embrace scapegoats, they are dismissed as a mindless rabble.
Clearly some among their number will indeed fit that description. But the frightening part is how many will not, and we need to understand why these ordinary people have teamed with them.

Thank you, This is what I need to understand and educate myself about.

Of course it was...

There's really no need for that here.

No officers should have been hurt if it was a peaceful protest so that is shocking.

My laugh emoji was for the BBC, not for injured officers.

Of course it was...

From the BBC 😂

The BBC were reporting the figure given to them by the Met Police. So not sure why you think that's funny...

Tarryawhile · 14/09/2025 09:53

I guess you’ve answered my question. I was just confused as to why one group is celebrated by the BBC and the other group branded far right.

The less than was that it’s OK to wave your Union flag at a middle class event but the people who marched in London were all racists and thugs. Is it down to a class perception.

I don’t know any of these people. I don’t know anyone who attended either. I didn’t go to the march and don’t watch it on TV. I didn’t go to the proms but I did watch it on TV and enjoyed it.

I wouldnt go on a March nor am I racist, accept, some asylum seekers are genuine and we should do more for refugees.

Im a bit lacking in information and understanding. Refugees are different from illegally entering a country then either disappearing or seeking asylum. These people have not been vetted god knows who they are what they've done previously. A man was arrested in Scotland yesterday for standing in his hotel room window naked doing sexual acts on himself! Its like wtf!

Allbacktoschool · 14/09/2025 09:16

I grew up in a very working class background, my parents are still in social housing, I suppose I would now be viewed as middle class (but that's defintely a subject for many other numerous MN threads). I live in South London so ended up getting the train with a lot of the people going to the march yesterday. TBH I would say lots of them didn't look like your average people I've ever been on a march with. Lots of them were older, all white (without exception), all drinking (it was early 11ish) but I didn't find anything too threatening about them (worth pointing out that I am white so if I was a person of colour I may have found it all quite indimidating), Overheard lots of talk about it being a family day out and how the media were misrepresenting it.

On the way home, I got the train back from Charing Cross and felt very different, lots of white men, wrapped in flags, many of them obviously very drunk and chants of 'Kier Starmer is a c..t , even thought there were lots of children about and it did feel intimidating, I was there with my teenage son and he's pretty streetwise but he commented on it feeling 'a bit scary'. I am sure if you were a person from a minority it would have felt much more so.

I do think if you attend these marches even if you don't consider yourself a racist 'and just want your country back' then just judge yourself by the company you're keeping on them. I am sure some of these people were families and viewed it as a nice day out but many of the people attending wouldn't have been there for that reason, including the organisers.

Peacepleaselouise · 14/09/2025 09:15

The proms is about being for something and about celebration.
The march was about being against something (or people) which makes lots of people feel afraid.

If Tommy Robinson said let’s all fly flags, have a cuppa tea and a custard cream on a Saturday to celebrate being British, you wouldnt be having people injured or frightened.

I’m very much in favour of people being able to protest. So I don’t think it should not be allowed but I question whether the things they are against are anything to do with British values. To me, it’s actually the opposite because we are as a nation a curious and tolerant bunch. Xenophobia is not part of our national identity.

BMW6 · 14/09/2025 09:01

Utter wankers at both events.

EU flag hat wankers
EDL wankers

LaundryGarden · 14/09/2025 08:50

DancingwiththeEuropeans · 13/09/2025 22:53

The violence in one and not the other?
The many EU flags at one and not the other?
The coming together to celebrate art and diversity in one and not the other? Many of the audience, composers and performers will not be British.

This.

Whateverwillwedonow · 13/09/2025 23:54

I’m not into the proms and I’m not into racist dickheads either. Being a dickhead isn’t down to class.

SocksAndTheCity · 13/09/2025 23:49

Divebar2021 · 13/09/2025 23:18

I don’t actually understand the question - what do you mean by “ are the working class less than”?

Nor do I - did you press post before you typed the last word of your title OP? 'Less than' what, or whom?

And I was at the counter protest today and can confirm that the drunk meatheads wrapped in their cheap Chinese-manufactured polyester flags from Amazon were indeed abusive, racist and violent to the point that other participants were penned in by the police and prevented from leaving for their own safety. The tube ride home was appalling.

I've never been to the proms (possibly because I'm working class Hmm), but I'm pretty sure that hasn't happened yet.

I'd be very tempted to touch the march with a bargepole quite forcefully

But I wouldn't as violence isn't the answer

That made me laugh 🤣
