Grown man just shouted at DD2

We are on our third train. 5 hours into a journey . I have DD2 and DD3.
Colouring, reading , toy animals. A few goggles and the odd roar from the toy dinosaurs !
I just had to take both to the toilet to DD who was 2 this month could have her nappy changed. There was a tiny cubicle and as I laid her head on the floor ( no facilities ) she came distressed and scared which was made worse by the handier going off .

We returned to our seats and she was crying for 90 seconds and then she did let out a scream .

A grown man aged 45? 50 shouted for ‘For God sake shut up!’
I was agog.

The children have been quiet as mice for the past half an hour .
They Are 2 and 3 and I think they have behaved so well . I have sat on trains webere children have giggled or cried or babies cried non stop and I have and would never shout.

I feel upset and angry and annoyed . AIBU?

Again, screaming at children like that is not normal. You are entitled to your opinion of me. It changes nothing.

Antimimisti · 12/09/2025 12:47

I agree that a noisy child on a train is enormously irritating, but that's not an excuse to shout at them. It's just one of those things you have to live with.

I always tell myself 'I can leave this noise behind when I get off the train - the poor parent has to go home with it.'

housebrick · 12/09/2025 12:47

I'd have been ok sitting opposite you - definitely wouldn't have shouted. Probably would have smiled, chattered etc.

I'm his demographic.

Far rather you and family than an arse telling his/her story in loud voice on a mobile.

I don’t scream at kids I don’t know.

can’t you read? Being so smart and all.

Have you met a young child or a baby before, ever?

What did OP do when her child screamed.
Hopefully she told her off?
Many parents no longer correct there children at all and yet we wonder why there are so many problems with discipline.
The poster I answered annoyed me with her constant f**ing and her attitude of going off on one. Such a mature attitude -making her as bad as the shouting male in OPS post

Of course you shouldn’t have to remove yourself from society
People get annoyed and stressed by noise irrespective of who’s causing it.

He was stressed/ annoyed/ angry ( whatever) he shouted, he left.

Its a non issue

Right. He should have just left without shouting, but he shouted briefly then left.

That is actually a very normal behaviour - normal being happens all the time all over the world, constantly.

Nothing to get worked up about and certainly nothing that the ableist bigots on this thread should be telling anyone to stay home over.

You try to adopt a patronising tone but it just doesn’t work on adult ls who have dealt with people far smarter and better at it than you.

A 45 yr old man shouting out loud on a train about a 2 year old making pretty normal 2 year old noise is so far from acceptable behaviour that it’s quite remarkable that anyone would try to justify it.

How are you defining smart?

MrsDoubtfire1 · 12/09/2025 12:45

For me, 90% of noise in a train carriage with toddlers is how much the parents are doing to keep them occupied. If I see the parents are doing their best, I feel empathy for them. The ones I can't stand are the self entitled who behave as if they own the carriage. The man was a jerk! And a bully!

He shouldn’t have shouted and he was an arsehole for doing so.

But I sympathise with him, children are noisy and irritating and you have very little choice on a train except to sit there and take it.

Where does it state that the man’s job involved being on the train?

I work from home. I rarely go out.

but according to you I should go out less because I would be better “put away”.

where? Somewhere I get dressed so you can identify those like me and fed gruel and the normies don’t have to deal with the likes of us?

you should be ashamed of yourself.

As I said. I do all that. But sometimes it isn’t enough.

But i get the message. Remove my self from society.

thanks. I get it.

I didn't adopt any tone, I just stated facts. The fact that you find facts patronising is your problem, not mine.

You're not capable of polite conversation or discussion, you should stay home forever.

What are you taking about?

DancingNotDrowning · 12/09/2025 12:43

thebabayaga2025 · 12/09/2025 12:36

You seem to be struggling with comprehension. We're talking about the fact that you have definitely, irrefutably, lost your rag at some point in public and that therefore you must stay home forever if abiding by your own rules.

You can stop digging now.

Your repeating my words back to me in some inadequate facsimile of my own argument is weird and doesn’t work.

make your own argument or don’t bother but if your point boils down to I (and everyone else) have lost my temper and shouted at a stranger in public you’re wrong.

And the fact that you seem to genuinely believe that most people have “lost their rag” with a stranger in public speaks volumes about the sort of person you are.

bumbaloo · 12/09/2025 12:43

thebabayaga2025 · 12/09/2025 12:38

45 year olds can very definitely NOT always regulate their emotions as all humans can snap when constantly pestered and harassed and are experiencing a cortisol dump and higher blood pressure.

And as all he did was shout and leave you have no point to make.

But you already know your comment is irrelevant.

You try to adopt a patronising tone but it just doesn’t work on adult ls who have dealt with people far smarter and better at it than you.

I'm generally a very quiet and polite person who often doesn't say anything, probably even on occasions when I should.

Maybe 2 or 3 times in my life "everything" has got on top of me and I've had an outburst at someone if public when I shouldn't have. I can't be the only one.

Bunnycat101 · 12/09/2025 12:42

Were you on a section of 4 with 3 of you and him? If so, I suspect he probably has been disturbed during the train journey/ not thrilled to be surrounded by toddlers who will be more noisy to others than to you. However, the onus is on him to move and not to shout at the small people who can’t help being a bit noisy or crying from time to time.

Lavender14 · 12/09/2025 12:41

Gingernessy · 12/09/2025 12:36

They don't have a right to disturb other people and the screaming thing is getting out of hand.
Why is there this need to scream!

You realise this is a 2 year old? Mine is that age and we have been working on when and what a soft voice and a big voice are for but sometimes he will just randomly make a big noise because at that age they're curious to see what reaction will happen. They aren't trying to be annoying or irritating, it's normal brain development at play in real time. Op has obviously been managing them and has been employing strategies to keep them occupied and distracted but 5 hours is a VERY long journey for a small child.

It always amazes me when people make these comments as if they didn't do exactly the same when they were that small! Every single toddler does this.
