Political violence on the rise.

People are getting angry when people have Political views they don't agree with. Freedom of speech must be allowed not shutdown.

Tragic news of a young family man shot by someone today. Please remember he was a human with a family. Violence is never ok.

Why would I like it? I've already said my fear is this will lead to more violence.

And I doubt the killer will face justice, I'm guessing they will quietly be disposed of.

It's never anyone else to blame, is it?

You'd like that, wouldn't you? You maybe right. However, whatever piece of vermin shot his neck to pieces, will hopefully meet the death penalty.

The problem though, is words incite. If your followers are spoiling for a fight, a bit unstable, your words can have disastrous consequences - the insurrection and attack on the Capitol for example, incited by mere words. So those with a public platform have a duty to be mindful of the power of their words

Free speech is something generally agreed across the political spectrum as long as you believe in democracy. But the disagreement arises when considering if it should be an absolute right and always ‘trump’ all other rights or whether there should be any caveats to it where there are certain consequences arising from speech which clashes with other rights. Libel and slander legislation would be an example of this I think?

I personally don’t think we should be jailing folk for writing things on sm. I think the solution to it is unfortunately quite dry and boring and which would not get traction on tik tok in that we should be doing all we can to preserve the rule of law and democracy. The US seems to have gone quite far down the road of dismantling these things and we need to be very careful in the UK that we don’t do the same but I fear that we will.

I think it is important to emphasise however that the US isn’t the UK and they face different problems to us.

Terribly sad for this man and his family.

The UK doesn’t have the same gun violence issue as the US.

Interestingly, an American man was interviewed who had been stood right at the front at the time of shooting. He referenced an English man who said something as long the lines of “ at least it will stop him talking” as that man said, it’s a world wide issue

It wouldn't surprise me if the far right killed him as a strategy to inflame tensions.

The US has a history of killing its own people.

As a Christian (Catholic) myself, I must strongly disagree.

You don’t get to Duct Tape Jesus to your head, all call yourself a “Christian”.

Living a Christian life means not supporting guns, or deaths from guns, or the death penalty, or stopping gay rights, it’s means welcoming refugees, looking after the sick and the less fortunate, helping the poor .. I could go on.

The “Christian Right” espouses some of the least Christian views I’ve ever seen.

Hear hear. If Jesus turned up in the USA today he'd be denounced as a 'communist' for espousing such radical ideas as kindness to strangers, helping the needy and the meek inheriting the earth. As for providing free healthcare to lepers...

No, he just accepted that gun deaths are an unavoidable unfortunate consequence

So he didn't incite it then. 🤔 really not sure why @serendipityjane thought Lucy Connolly was relevant, here.

Both left and right believe the other to be misguided or wrong. But the left have gone a step further, believing people on the right aren’t just wrong - they’re actively evil. They’re convinced that just by virtue of being on the left, they have the monopoly on goodness, fairness, kindness. So it’s easy then to dehumanise those on the right and shrug off violence against them.

Yeah ok, that's a play that could be lifted from the American evangelical playbook. Been there, done that. From the mid-60s to today they're still doing it, and it's morphed into the political leadership of today (all by design, by the way, the sheer amount of money and mobilisation poured into it is staggering and all a matter of public record).

I remember the absolute horror and disdain I was treated with when people realized I supported gay rights and didn't think being gay was a sin. My husband was barred from positions at church and called demonic and evil for his own position on the same matter. If we couldn't guarantee we would "come into line" and stay in line always and forever we could come to church, but we couldn't serve in any leadership positions ever. And definitely we couldn't vote left, not even a tiny bit. This was - oh maybe 4 years ago?

This group is in large part Trump's base, and CK's base. I recognize so many things in their schtick that I was taught verbatim as a teen in church.

That's not to say the left (if you can call it that in America, less-right is probably more accurate) has it right. They do the same thing. Both are wrong. Both need talking down. But only one is in power at present, and enacting laws with very real harms attached. Because they are in the govt their behavior carries more weight. If the Democrats were in and behaving this way my answer would be the same.

I 100% agree with you that killing people for having opposing views is wrong, and most people would, but I think the point people are making here is that HE wouldn't agree with you. He's (or was) part of the problem.

The right to bear arms to Americans does NOT mean that they advocate killing people they disagree with!

One can support the right to have a gun but not support violence.

And before you start, I’m very anti-gun.

Let’s also be clear, it’s not just a political assassination but a religious one. He stood for living a Christian life and was a religious man.

More speculation.

I repeat, no one yet knows the motivation of the shooter. Nothing was etched onto the cartridges, no manifesto has been found. Until some kind of evidence comes to light, you have no idea whether the victim's religion was a factor. Speculation like this helps no one, it allows rumours to spread with no consideration for truth. It's utterly irresponsible.

Indeed the US isn't the UK, but we're usually about five years down the line. We mustn't let it happen.

We're not about five years down the line. We banned hand guns after Dunblane.

Our knife laws are so strict It's difficult to carry anything more than a vegetable peeler in public without a reason.

We show no sign of imposing, expensive healthcare and not caring if the people can't afford it. The biggest cause of personal bankruptcies in the US, is because of medical bills.

We offer one year of maternity leave.Whereas the US is usually a few weeks unpaid. If they give any at all. They get about 10 days of paid annual leave if they get any at all. They have no workers rights.

We are not just a step behind from the US and we never will be.

This. ^ The tedious and continual threads bashing the England flags and anyone who flies them are boring me so much now that I just instantly hide them. Literally CBA to debate with such narrow minded people, who refuse to see anyone else's point of view but their own, and try and shout anyone down who DARES to have anything other than a left wing opinion.

I have seen 1 to 2 threads a DAY bleating about 'The Flags' for the past 2-3 weeks, and they all say the same thing. How many fucking threads does one subject need FFS?!

If there's one thing 'The Left' hate, it's ANYone who doesn't think the same as them ... They do NOT believe in free speech, for anyone (except themselves!)

They live in a leftie echo chamber, and scream 'racist,' 'bigot,' and 'thick as mince' at anyone who is not left wing. It's just white noise now, and I can't take anything they say seriously.

I've read the flags thread here on mn. Such nastiness towards people around flags. Nastiness around left and right Political views. Debate but not hatred, nastiness and violence. Tragic.

its an educated guess based on what he stood for.

Why do you think he was shot?

So you accept that it is a guess then. Not "fact" as you were claiming. Yes, it could be someone with a political motivation. But that doesn't mean that you can call guesses "fact" until we know more.

When people said that words are ‘literal violence’ - this is the end result. And it’s terrible. We’re no longer civilised human beings. If words are off limits, if people are stripped of the ability to communicate with another human being, there’s nothing left except actual, physical violence.

The problem though, is words incite. If your followers are spoiling for a fight, a bit unstable, your words can have disastrous consequences - the insurrection and attack on the Capitol for example, incited by mere words. So those with a public platform have a duty to be mindful of the power of their words

Absolutely spot on. Progressive liberals aren't even recognised by some staunch leftists.

This was his trademark - set up "debates" (but wouldn't debate people who could hold their own calmly and logically, I do wonder if that's why he chose younger people), rage-bait people til they lose their cool, cut those clips into slick videos to post himself "owning the libs". Whatever happened on the campus today didn't have the chance to be cut into a viral video to push into certain algorithms. And I do know those algorithms because they show up in my 14yo son's stuff but not mine. It's pushed to specific people.

It's amazing how blind we are to the radicalisation happening in real time on all parts of the political spectrum. CK struck me as someone making bank out of it, and unfortunately it went terribly wrong.

Yes it was interesting to me that my 17 yo knew immediately who he was yesterday when I didn’t really.
