Teacher told my child that child is not a Muslim

My daughter has recently started reception and asked me today if our family are Muslims, to which I said yes. She then started crying saying her teacher told her that she (my daughter) is not a Muslim. Is it unreasonable to be angry about this?

But why on eaeth woukd a teacher go up to a Muslim child and tell her sge wasnt a Muslim. It is just so implausible, even if she was a racist why would she say it. It doesn't make sense! Given this why would you take the wird if a 4 year old wgo doesn't even appear to know herself what religion she is. It*s quite offensive to even question something so ridiculous.

Atinydropofcherrysherry she is aware our family is Muslim and asked for clarification. I have not dictated to her what to believe in, only what I / our family believe, but that's beyond the point. The point is does a teacher have a right to decide any which way about a child's religious background or inform her she isn't of any religion during to her age?

If she asked you if she's Muslim then maybe during a lesson where being Muslim was mentioned she asked the teacher if she was, and due to asking the teacher assumed she wasn't?

Ah ok. You’re a disingenuous poster, not really here to engage in anything productive, so won’t waste my time responding. Ta.

No I'm literally telling you why people have an issue.

My child would be taught it's ok for others to be gay (assuming my child isn't gay) and if he's not gay that's ok as well. However Muslims are teaching their children it's haram to be gay. So that's the issue.

Because it's the same as shouting bacon at Muslims

Im asking why someone would get offended if someone tells them something is ‘haram’ for them? Why is that offensive? Would you get offended if a Jewish person said they eat kosher food? Also, I don’t know a single Muslim person who gets offended when you shout bacon at them- it’s a word. lol. Also why would you shout bacon in anyone’s faces. Your post is odd.

What and why did you find it offensive? And what was the point of you mentioning your son goes to a catholic school and he is atheist - is this meant to make a point?

My DS now 15 told me when he was around your dds age that X parents were mean because they had cut his penis off. The boy had had a medical procedure at the hospital which I explained to my DS:).

Kids misunderstand. Maybe the teacher said something like "school is not a religious setting, it's for learning". What I found was offensive when my child was in state primary (now in private Catholic secondary but I'm atheist and so is my son he says) was that many of the muslim boys were referring to a whole bunch of normal activities as "haram" (dancing, holding hands etc)...

What and why did you find it offensive? And what was the point of you mentioning your son goes to a catholic school and he is atheist - is this meant to make a point?

ByTipsyRubyBalonz · 11/09/2025 00:30

It didn't happen. Why would a teacher have this conversation with your child. Child misunderstood.

FatCyclist · 11/09/2025 00:09

@Jkam24 I am so very sorry you are being subjected to such hostility from some people on this thread. I find these comments very disturbing and I really hope this hostility to Muslims is not something shared widely by MN users. Seriously ikk.

Jkam24 · 11/09/2025 00:07

@SemperIdem quite literally semper idem you lot. Reading comprehension is key. Goodnight 👋🏽

Hiptothisjive · 10/09/2025 23:57

It is a misunderstanding because I can almost guarantee a four year old got it wrong.

Seriously step back and think about this. There is nothing untoward here don’t look to be offended.

By the way people - I am a teacher. I've seen both sides, where kids get the wrong end of the stick and also when a fellow teacher has said something that's not appropriate. You'd be surprised how much it happens and adults think they can get away with it because they're addressing a child. People are fallible. I'm keeping an open mind either way

I’m astonished you’re as bothered as you are, considering you’re a teacher yourself.

Get a grip.

Jkam24 · 10/09/2025 22:27

@PorridgeAndSyrup thank you, Ill definitely take this on board. Didn't realise feeling emotion in regards to a child I gave birth to would enrage so many people! You're either too invested or not invested enough - and this is from fellow mothers. People need to do better

I know, there are some very tough people on here apparently! But when the children start reception, it only feels like 5 minutes ago that they were little babies, and it is easy to feel helpless as a parent because it's hard to know what's really going on in the classroom, and you never know how much to believe of what they say. But obviously it's going to be upsetting seeing your child cry! Good luck anyway!

Jkam24 · 10/09/2025 23:04

@BollyKnickerz her dad is white so I would say she is ethnically ambiguous

I think this is quite feasibly what has happened then. The teacher has a preconceived idea in her head of what a Muslim child looks like and your child does not fit that image. You can set her straight tomorrow if this is the case and the teacher will learn not to make assumptions.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 10/09/2025 23:41

YANBU if the teacher said this, but I voted YABU as you are angry solely based on what your DD has said.

Drop the teacher an email/ have a chat at pick up and ask where your DD might have got this impression, or if she did say that, why?

As an aside, as a teacher I hate teaching RE as I’m constantly afraid of accidentally saying the wrong thing, upsetting someone and being complained about. It’s a shame really as it’s a very interesting subject and there’s often fantastic discussions and chances for children to learn respectfully from each other.

I'm a retired Scottish secondary school teacher. I normally avoided the topic as well.

However...One time a teenage boy was mouthing off about his participation in Orange Walks and how he hated Catholics.

"Why do you hate Catholics?"

"Cos I'm a Protestant."

"Are you a member of a church?"

"Naw. Only Catholics go to church."

"I beg to differ. I'm a member of the Church of Scotland, so I'm a Protestant."

"Protestants don't go to church."

"I assure you that they do. You're telling me that you've never been inside a church..."

"It's just Catholics that do that."

"So what makes you think that you're a Protestant?"

I can't remember the full conversation now, but the poor lad seemed to think that "Protestant" meant "atheist". I suppose that he might have tried to make a case for "Protestant" as signifier of cultural rather than religious belief but he wasn't up to that: I rather think that he also believed that only Protestants played the flute [badly].

I half expected a parental complaint, but there was none.

@DustlandFairytaleBeginning she does! I just find the whole thing so odd. We talk about religion related values as part of our day to day life but I haven't had a conversation with her where I've said we're Muslim until she asked directly today. So I'm wondering where did this conversation come from, I was surprised she even asked me as I wasn't aware she understood the concept of religion / being Muslim - but the thread has been helpful in suggestions of what could have actually happened. I think the one that makes the most sense is that she asked if her teacher is Muslim to which she replied no and that's where the mix up was! Hopefully there aren't teachers out there dictating a childs (religious) beliefs aside from universal human values ❤️

@Owl55 I love all these funny stories! Unrelated but my daughter once asked what I was cooking - lentils - and she kept saying "oh like the movie!" I was confused but went along, realising after she went to bed she was referring to the movie Elemental 🥹

My child came home from reception and said they had been learning about sex ! Turned out they were learning about “sets” in maths!

YANBU.

But mumsnet won't afford your religion with the same level of empathy and consideration that they would give to other religions.

Side? These are not 2 equals in a discussion

Have you ever seen the description of the mum that is selling the last snow shovel they have left in the shop?

THAT is how there can be 2 sides.

Jkam24 · 10/09/2025 20:57

I'm not sure where I said I instantly believed her. My DD is advanced for her age therefore I asked her this explain a few times / in a few different ways, so concluded there is a chance that she would be telling the truth.

I have a reception age child and, respectfully, the brightest kids at this age will usually have the most overactive imaginations!

Does your daughter get a Halal school meal? If not I'm wondering if this might be where the confusion arose.

LoserWinner · 10/09/2025 23:10

Nothing to do with religion, but when I registered my fourth child at school, I accidentally put the wrong date of birth. When they did a ‘This is me’ task, my child gave the correct birthday date, and the teacher told him it was wrong because it didn’t match the information on their records. It was a bit embarrassing to have to go in and tell them I’d made a mistake. Perhaps the school record for your daughter is incorrect?
