Anti immigration and England being 'racist'

AngryBird6122 · 10/09/2025 10:59

Do people know that this is not just a UK thing? I see so many people saying they are ashamed to be british etc but this is happening the world over. And it can work both ways! I have close family in Japan and there are protests there too and they are being treated very differently - yes, white english! The right are gaining traction there too. Are the Japanese allowed to be proud of their country and fly their flags? What's people's thoughts on this?

Sorry, but I had to google kurds in Japan. It seem there are 2000 to 3000 of them. The population of Japan is 124 million! Two thousand people create lots of societal problems? Sorry, but I don´t buy it. It´s just plain xenophobia.

Yup. Racism is racism. Whether it’s here or in Alabama or Japan or Oz or wherever. The Japanese government are treating the Kurds like lepers. And there’s only a handful of them.

Letstheriveranswer · 10/09/2025 12:49

From what I hear the Japanese aren't racist, they are a very culturally homogenous society, their society works really well because it's homogenous and they all share the same culture. Why shouldn't they want to keep it that way?

If they are discriminating against people who are raised in Japan and blend well into the Japanese culture, purely because they have a different skin colour, that would be racism.

As someone with a Japanese fiance I have numerous conversations about immigration. He and his family and friends are sick to the back teeth of Kurds and Chinese. The Kurds causing many societal problems. They want them to be deported . You live in Japan you adhere to their cultural norms. Anyone living over there should not expect society to bend to their will.

My point is more - do people realise this is going on around the world? Japan, Australia, I've just seen things are stepping up in France. US, of course.

My family have always been treated well in JP until recently. One of them went to buy pokemon cards the other day and was told by the shop owner they only sell to Japanese 😆

Wow that seems quite extreme. I don’t know how you go and live in Japan; do they have visas which you can get only for specific skills or offer political asylum? Everybody I know who has lived in Japan has loved it - but they’ve also come back, because the call of home is stronger.

My go to answer to this is "Passive aggression and binge drinking" 😆

Being serious, though: there's a huge resurgence right now in things like British folk dancing, music, folklore, pagan festivals and interest in ancient sites like stone circles. I know some all female Morris sides, and they're totally badass!

From where I'm standing, celebrating British countryside and culture has never been stronger. And it is (or tries to be) completely inclusive.

But you never see any of the gammon flag shaggers at these events, and expressing racist or aggressive views would be very unwelcome. So I do wonder what their version of "British culture" is? Some of them bang on about being Christian, but they don't strike me as regular churchgoers.

To add: my suspicion is that the flag shaggers' idea of "British culture" is driving their German car to a flat roofed pub to drink copious pints of French lager and watch Saudi- owned football teams battling it out on a widescreen Japanese TV 😆

ENGLISH as opposed to British. The flags going up around the cities near here are all English l, specifically, not Union flags.

Do you question the existence of other countries’ customs and cultures or is it just here you think doesn’t have any?

Interesting question. Mine was aimed at the fact that there apparently are these special ‘customs’ for the English - as opposed to British- so I was genuinely curious as to what they might be. I was hoping for something ore unique than ‘pub’ or Sunday roast or London taxis but seems there isn’t really anything. Guy Fawkes night - that’s deffo an English rather than British one.

So people in the UK should be allowed to be racists because it happens in other countries?!
I think people realise that. However, you've pretty much admitted that putting up a British flag right now is a racist thing to do?

Idinnaenah · 10/09/2025 11:43

As a non-English person I’d be really interested to know what English customs and culture are. Morris dancing? Maypoles? Colonising other countries??
’Fighting-age’ is an interesting choice of words - are you worried that some of the small boat arrivals are actually enemy soldiers planning a very slow, piecemeal invasion of some kind?

Unless I’ve gone mad ALL those things still exist?

Exactly. How are these under threat?

Idinnaenah · 10/09/2025 12:34

so now hate crimes and anti-Kurdish discrimination ( including from the police) is an issue.
seems racism is racism whether it’s against black peoples, Kurds, Syrians etc etc etc

EasternStandard · 10/09/2025 12:34

There are quite a few countries where similar pressures are being applied politically.

The Japanese government has a policy of rejecting asylum requests from Kurds but also doesn’t deport them, which leaves them in a legal limbo unable to work legally, get health insurance etc, get schooling for the children -
Seems as if this one might be solvable if the government actually choose to address the issue.

Mass immigration and uncontrolled borders are not a good thing. There is nothing racist about that.

You can add all the fluff to try and label people as racist, it doesn’t work anymore. And you are not doing any favors to race relations by being in denial.

Wanting to preserve your culture and customs is not racist.

Wanting to stop boatloads of fighting age men who’s identity we do not know and who are from a different culture and are not escaping persecution in their homeland, who hold different views about the welfare of women and children coming to the UK illegally and then being given priority treatment over people born here, is also not racist.

What’s a “fighting age” man? Do “fighting age” women exist?

What is “fighting age”?

JHound · 10/09/2025 12:17

AngryBird6122 · 10/09/2025 11:08

It doesn't. But they have really serious concerns there about immigration and in particualr about the Japanese culture disappearing

Well that’s because they’re thick.

Immigrants are under 3% of their population and Japanese culture is going nowhere.

HarperStern · 10/09/2025 12:17

Culturally, the biggest influence on us here by a million miles has been the US from film/TV. Nobody seems to ever protest about that though.

JHound · 10/09/2025 12:16

PandoraSocks · 10/09/2025 11:29

The protests in Japan seem tiny. The information about them is being spread by a far right account and cheered on by Musk. That tells you a lot.

Musk voices support for anti-immigration rally in Japan - The Japan Times https://share.google/G9GT1JZgQkNBG6XbA

White Supremacists are obsessed with Japan.

Hence Musk’s interest.

He is a weirdo: supporting anti-immigrant protests in a country with almost no immigrants but not too long ago protesting that it should be easier to bring H1B visa holders to the USA and being an immigrant himself.

What a weirdo.

MaidOfSteel · 10/09/2025 12:14

Yes, I’m aware that our situation is mirrored around much of the world and I understand the concerns.

As soon as migration is mentioned here, even if it’s not immediately negative, you get jumped on by the ‘do-gooders’ and called a bigot.

ScholesPanda · 10/09/2025 12:12

Of course there is racism everywhere.

Japan is a very closed country, which doesn't tolerate much in the way of immigration. It has a long history of ultra nationalism. If you'd like to read more about it then maybe look up Unit 731 and the way they treated Chinese people as inferior.

Or just watch some re-runs of Tenko.

The Irish comedian Tommy Tiernan summed up the English for me when he said ‘ The English have a fierce reputation for conquering the world… invading loads of different countries and then getting upset when those people follow them home’ … amen brother!

Spot on!

JHound · 10/09/2025 12:12

Why is it relevant that it is “happening the world over”?

People can he ashamed of what is happening in their country even if other countries are experiencing the same.

Idinnaenah · 10/09/2025 12:11

2dogsandabudgie · 10/09/2025 12:02

English culture and traditions - Drinking tea, afternoon tea, queuing in an orderly fashion, moaning about the weather too hot or too cold, love of football and cricket, our pubs, Sunday roast, trooping of the colour, changing of the guards, red London buses, black cabs, celebrating Christmas, Boxing Day, Easter, November 5th and Guy Fawkes, to name a few.

I'm sure I've missed out loads of others but these were just off the top of my head.

Unless I’ve gone mad ALL those things still exist?
