AIBU to assume that the majority of posters read The Daily Mail or The Telegraph??

I relatively new around here but judging from several threads about flags, trans and autistic, people, there seems to be a lot of posters who love seeing the St Georges Cross up everywhere, are anti-trans and wouldn't give much credence to the struggles that autistic people face. Seems to me they must believe everything they read in The Mail or The Telegraph. Or am I being unreasonable?!

I have a subscription to the new York times for the games. I don't read the news, but I listen to Radio 4

And that matters to you? get a life

This is a hilarious comment. Do you literally hang around, say this on every thread? I think we all know who needs to get a life!

PotOfViolas · 10/09/2025 15:38

Definitely more read those news sites than in the past, yes.

It’s not a hive mind there are lots of different opinions on here.

Having said that, I think the loudest voices are to the left politically. My impression is that more people are against the displaying of the flags then for it on Mumsnet but it depends which threads you read.

There is a lot of discussion about trans issues on the feminist board. I think it’s unfair to say anti-trans. It is well reasoned and logical and has been going on for a long time here. There is a break it down for me thread if you want to understand that point of view rather than just dismiss it as bigoted. Yes, a lot of the old timers are jaded and quite straight in what they will say about this after years of being told that their view should be kept quiet.

There is lots of talk about autism and lots of different experiences - both people who have been diagnosed with or suspect they might have autism themselves and who have children with autism as well as some people who are more sceptical about spectrum and potential over diagnosis.

Agree. Mixed opinions on most threads. Lots of left leaning voices.

Believing in biological reality and protecting the rights of women is important to many women. The threads on trans and 'changing sex' are very logical, science and factually based. Children need protection and help with mental health issues and when some believe 'changing gender' is the answer to all problems it doesn't help the bigger mental health issues.

Autism is a spectrum and so there are many different individuals where autism presents differently some affect individuals mildly and some aspects of autism might have a devastating impact on an individual's life. Often views come from the perspective of the individuals with autism that they know.

BBC although I know it's biased. Just look at how they cover the genocide in Gaza. The Independent years ago when it was more "independent", The Guardian, Al Jazeera, Also thejournal.ie

There is a lot of Faragey bot spam on here at the moment.

Fortunately quite a lot of people can see through it. You can't convince people that a load of people painting flags on things in their spare time are anything but bored twats.

They will have to wait for civil unrest.

Edited

How dare you! It's all about patriotic pride and anyone who suggests otherwise is a far-left loon.

The Daily Mail and The Guardian are perhaps the only free titles left of the main newspapers, so I'm guessing a lot of people, like me, read both. I'd also think - and very much hope - that only a tiny minority believe everything they read in either. They're both businesses with a target audience to attract and reassure, after all.

Yep, the rest being owned/run by billionaires with billionaire agendas.

I like to believe the majority, like myself, read a range of publications.
I'm centre left (ish), but had a subscription to the Telegraph for a while. The Daily Mail I read very occasionally.

I think it's important, regardless of one's politics, to read widely so you can reasonably argue different points of view.

Totally agree.

I really hate any attempt to label, categorise and then dismiss people and their opinions based on what they are suspected of reading.

I used to work in a place which had a range of newspapers available. I didn’t get the DM so I would read it at work. I found it interesting to read a different approach to the one I was used to. Colleagues would tease me…but they were all reading it in th3 quiet! I roll my eyes when I hear or read on MN the contempt for DM readers - as if The Guardian is the only paper for Right (or Left!) Thinking People. I can’t be doing with narrow-mindedness.

JNicholson · 10/09/2025 15:17

I don’t really have a view on what paper mumsnetters in general read, but the majority of mumsnetters do strike me as deeply Tory, not left, in their general outrage at the idea that they should ever be required to think about anyone else or anyone else’s feelings. It’s very individualist, me and my little family (if they like their family which often they don’t, so potentially just me), and fuck everybody else. That thread yesterday by a woman with late diagnosed autism was a case in point, post after post attacking her for having the nerve to tell her family that she didn’t like crowded spaces and wanted to eat somewhere else. People were obviously massively triggered by the idea that anyone might have a condition that meant they had actual needs that needed to be taken into consideration. The nerve!

Women often do get pressured to put other people’s feelings first, so I guess a certain amount of reaction against that is healthy, but mumsnetters definitely take it to its limits.

beatree · 10/09/2025 15:16

I don’t read the Daily Mail. I’m none of what you say other I believe trans ‘(wo)men’ should keep their dicks out of women’s spaces because I believe in women’s rights. If they want to pretend they are a woman outside of protected spaces then great.

You’re welcome.

I do agree about the BBC’s coverage of Gaza. Terrifically biased.

Why they are so biased against Israel and Jews is no doubt complicated. But a core factor must be the insidious antisemitic metropolitan left influence within the corporation.

Whatever the explanation, you’re right. Appalling lack of impartiality towards Israel.

Yes they are appalling I've no idea how they get away with it.

Whichever 'side' their reporters are on we as viewers should not be able to tell.

Their anti Israel bias is so very transparent.

I think those with the strongest opinions shout the loudest.

For example Mumsnet is known as an anti trans hotbed because of the number of threads, but I expect most people take a more nuanced view, such as having no issues with using preferred pronouns but not wanting trans women in women's sports etc.

Same with the immigration topic - lots of people seem very pro or against but I expect most users are somewhere in between.

Those of us with more central views tend not to bother trying to argue with those with strong opinions because we recognise there's no point in arguing with strangers online.

100% this.

This has always been a hard left site, and it's become progressively less progressive and more radicalised far left over time. The fact that you are seeing centrists standing up to be counted even here is a sign of how utterly sick of being shouted down normal, centrist people are. Anybody who is not radicalised far left is called vicious slurs on a regular basis by a very mouthy minority and mumsnetters got away with that for years.

Not been on the Canary for a while have you?

Hard left my arse…

Eloeeze · 10/09/2025 14:13

Do people still read newspapers?

Shegotanology · 10/09/2025 14:09

Those filled with hate, usually shout the loudest.

TheKeatingFive · 10/09/2025 14:07

I would think anyone who genuinely wanted to educate themselves nowadays would read from a wide range of sources.

Penfoldfive · 10/09/2025 14:05

I would say it's economically right wing - very anti SAHMs, big families - quite judgemental if people are struggling financially.

And socially left wing - pro lock down, big state, "progressive" on social issues.

Dillydollydingdong · 10/09/2025 13:57

The Mail is actually a paper aimed at women. I read it, even though I may not necessarily agree with political opinions (which are not all right wing). Yesterday we had an article about Jennifer Aniston, something from Nadine Dorries, an article about a girl who died from ketamine, and the author who took some as an experiment; Amanda Platell telling about the five marriage proposals she received over her lifetime; an article about obesity with a picture of a woman's waist with a tape measure around it etc. Recently we've had articles about Ozempic, Mounjaro and Wegovy (written by women and detailing their personal experiences), an article about Armani and some of the dresses he created and the actresses who wore them, a woman whose son was stolen and adopted, a woman who likes to sleep with younger men, a 49 yo woman who's living off her parents etc. etc. I accept that SOME men might be interested in these things, but not the vast majority. And interestingly, the Mail costs £1.20 compared with £1.80 for most other tabloids.
