AIBU to assume that the majority of posters read The Daily Mail or The Telegraph??

I relatively new around here but judging from several threads about flags, trans and autistic, people, there seems to be a lot of posters who love seeing the St Georges Cross up everywhere, are anti-trans and wouldn't give much credence to the struggles that autistic people face. Seems to me they must believe everything they read in The Mail or The Telegraph. Or am I being unreasonable?!

Another lefty Guardian reading gender critical here: certainly not ‘anti trans’.
I believe in my right to be defined by sex not gender, for women’s rights to be defined by sex not gender. And for the right of trans people to live their lives free from harassment… as trans people.

But alongside inclusive spaces, open to all, there will also be sex specific spaces. And, should they wish then, gender specific spaces. And I would not dream of trying to insist on my right to join a support group for Transwomen.

Personally I read the Guardian, Observer, Times, BBC, New Statesman and Spectator because I like to hear a range of perspectives.

I won't read the Mail (right wing trash paper) or Sun (on moral grounds, Liverpool family connections) but I'll have a look at most other articles linked to.

I love how the Mail is condemned for it's right wing views but the Guardian is considered acceptable, presumably because it represents an acceptable bias to the left,

fairfat40 · 10/09/2025 23:25

I read the Times, NYT, and I’ll dip into the the Guardian and Mail. You sound like you’ll only accept proscribed views deemed acceptable? But anti trans? To me, the pro women’s rights stance is Marxist feminist rather than the free wheeling individualism that is pro capitalism and pushes lifelong medication and expensive surgeries.

Mumsnet being "hard left" is one of the funniest things I've read in ages.

I find it really depressing how radicalised and far left it is, but you do you.

Thanks for bumping my comment though, it was hidden pages back :)

There is a lot of Faragey bot spam on here at the moment.

Fortunately quite a lot of people can see through it. You can't convince people that a load of people painting flags on things in their spare time are anything but bored twats.

They will have to wait for civil unrest.

Edited

The bot thing comes up repeatedly from Labour / left though. It’s just a way to try and drive non Labour off the site. It’s better that people don’t just hear all the same political viewpoint.

Mutability · 10/09/2025 17:38

I subscribe to the Guardian online, but rarely a day goes by that I don’t look at the Daily Mail online. How else would I know what celeb is flaunting herself or embracing her curves? 😉

Abhannmor · 10/09/2025 17:36

I find flags a bit annoying but they don't affect me either way. Autism is a serious problem. Trans is too vague a term really but I don't think people can change sex if that's what you mean?

Never read the mail or Torygraph. I've given up on the Guardian. Used to be a Communist but I'd settle for a proper Labour government. La lotta continua....

I read the Guardian in Saturday ( but often shout at it /find it smug/full of middle class bollocks). Also read Private Eye.
Wouldn't wipe my arse on the Daily Fail or the Sun.
Listen to Radio 4 but again sometimes find it smug and sometimes right wing.
How about u OP?

Nick Robinson is the personification of smugness!!

Love Private Eye. I check out The Guardian too, Also Al Jazeera, and thejournal.ie

I have digital subscriptions for the Times, the Telegraph, (a limited bit of) the FT, and the New York Times, plus I support the Guardian for a couple of £ per month. I listen to R4. I value a balance of editorial inputs. I'm centre right politically. No interest in celebrity or the Royals.

Greedybilly · 10/09/2025 17:31

@FutureMarchionessOfVidalWELL PUT!

Greedybilly · 10/09/2025 17:28

@2dogsandabudgieI can promise you as a Daily Fail hater I would never link a thread to it. Probably wouldn't even know how to do that. Literally can't bear it and the people I know who swallow the utter shite and hatred they spew out. So misogynistic.

hattie43 · 10/09/2025 17:23

I think this page is hugely left wing , just look at the pile on and shouting racism at just about anything they don’t agree with .

Depressing to read this and see how successfully culture war issues like painting flags on roundabouts (a supreme example of peoples’ energies being diverted into something completely pointless) and entitled men in women’s spaces (aka trans ‘rights’) have been used to create fake ‘left’ and ‘right’ identities based on …… nothing of substance at all.

The Mail & the Guardian are two sides of the same coin. Presented differently for different tastes, to make different groups feel self-righteous.

This wasn’t always the case. Sadly it is now; the rich get richer, while the poor paint pretty patterns on roundabouts, & the middle classes bicker over Eddie Izzard.

I also feel depressed about the divisiveness of contemporary politics and culture. I’m old and it’s never been this bad. I’m sure it’s the internet and SM setting everyone against each other for clicks and dollars.

And whenever there’s anything, absolutely anything, which could potentially bring people together, someone rubbishes it and tells us we should reject it.
i have friends across the political spectrum but that’s because we recognise the things we have in common and value them. Oddly enough, my DM-reading friend is one of the most woke…and yes, she gets teased, but I think she reads it partly to rebel against stereotyping.

I don't think people here are "anti-trans" they are pro women keeping their rights as opposed to giving them up to men. As long as trans identified men keep out of women's spaces and accept reality I don't think anyone cares what they do.

Edited

Absolutely.

Do people even read newspapers these days? I don’t and I don’t think I know anyone who does, apart from my elderly father, on a Sunday.

Yes, online. And some still do buy actual newspapers.

I'd say most just click on a few articles in the tabloids but don't read much of it.

basinbasin · 10/09/2025 15:54

I don't think MNs is far left at all, maybe a mix of centre right and centre left. I've been surprised that Reform are so popular on here.

5128gap · 10/09/2025 15:54

I am hard left and my priorities are class/wealth inequality and womens rights. I think the flags are a worrying sign of the way right wing extremists have been able to exert influence through social media. I have no opinion on autism because I have no experience of it and am not medically qualified. I think people with a trans identity should have equal rights and not be discriminated against. I do not believe TWAW and do not think they should have access to single sex spaces for women. What paper do I read?

Actually I think MN has a good range of opinion, left and right, and centre. In fact, if you REALLY drill down, most regular posters will have views on many sides of each spectrum, depending on the subject.

It is possible to be anti something traditionally left, or pro something traditionally right at the same time, life is rarely black and white. Also if you go far enough left, you come back round to the right anyway....... and vice versa!!
