What would your husband say if he came home from work and you’d had a drink?

I have had a glass of wine tonight after work, thought why not?
Dh is home and is furious, speaking to me like a disgrace and slamming cupboards.
I now have an uncomfortable silence which isn’t quite a silence because he’s saying he’s not giving me the silent treatment.

If you have an alcohol problem possibly although still childish behaviour on his part if you dont or haven't had one then this is controlling and weird

Lillabet · 09/09/2025 16:01

Currently my DH would raise an eyebrow as I'm not allowed to drink due to ill health (he'd then be finding out what's driven me to it 😂),. When I'm not ill, he'd ask where his is and would I like another. For what it's worth, I told my DH what you'd posted, his response was "What a controlling twat waffle!" 🤷🏼‍♀️

Zimunya · 09/09/2025 15:59

Wowzel · 08/09/2025 18:57

He definitely wouldn't behave like that, but he'd be very surprised as I don't drink much

This. But you're perfectly entitled to have a drink if you want. Men don't own women's bodies. Put whatever you want in yours!

TakeMeToTheDarkSideOfTheMoon · 09/09/2025 15:54

Mine would be confused as I don't drink alcohol. However he wouldn't behave like your partner, he would be asking me if I were OK.

Unless you have a drink problem I can't understand why he's so upset, even then there's a much better way of approaching it.

MyLittleNest · 09/09/2025 15:49

This guy sounds controlling as hell! Get out of that marriage. I rarely suggest this on here, but seriously. That's an enormous overreaction, an assumption that you should live as he does, and silent treatments are a form of abuse. A glass of wine one evening and he reacts like this? I am speechless. Are you living in a convent? I mean WTF?!

Daygloboo · 09/09/2025 15:46

Clariana · 08/09/2025 19:02

Do you know, I wouldn't GAF!

I have just had a pint of wine and my husband is standing cooking tea and hasn't said a word! ( In my defence I would like to point out I have had a very difficult day and I don't usually drink much at all!)

A pint of wine ? Blooming 'ec. 😂

OnlyHasEyesForLoki · 09/09/2025 15:41

This it’s controlling behaviour. Your body, your money, your life, your choice!

Threeboystwocatsandadog · 09/09/2025 15:36

Dh would find it amusing as I rarely drink whereas he has a glass of wine 3/4 times a week. He sometimes has a glass of wine with lunch. The thing is, what do you do now? Promise never to do it again? Drink only in secret? Or tell him that you are an adult and are allowed to have a glass of wine whenever you feel like it.

ManteesRock · 09/09/2025 15:36

Well I get in from work at 10am so he'd probably say "a bit early don't you think" 🤣🤣

Pickingmyselfup · 09/09/2025 15:35

It would be so unremarkable he wouldn't even think to comment.

Mumstheword1983 · 09/09/2025 15:34

SquirrelsInSpace · 08/09/2025 18:57

Yikes. That's not OK. I drink when I want to drink.

This.

Kinglynn · 09/09/2025 15:31

Say “good or bad day”. I either had a drink because I went out with a friend or I’ve had a shit day. I never drink except at Christmas. If I drove home after a drink then that’s a different story.

pinknailvarnish1 · 09/09/2025 15:30

Nothing! But to be honest we are both wine lushes!

Travsmam · 09/09/2025 15:29

I’d tell him to fuck right off if he was my husband. What a bell end

Menonut · 09/09/2025 15:28

My husband would die of shock as I’ve not had a drink since 1997! 😂
Similar to your husband I come from a teetotal family, however, if I came home and my husband had poured a drink and it wasn’t the norm, I’d be more concerned at the reason for it and be checking he was ok, rather than calling him a disgrace.

Tablesandchairs23 · 09/09/2025 15:27

I don't understand why he's angry. He needs to grow up. Is he controlling in other ways.

AdoraBell · 09/09/2025 15:26

My DH wouldn’t say anything about it.

WTFsmh12 · 09/09/2025 15:25

If it’s unusual for you to have a drink after work, surely it would raise concern and he should be asking if everything’s ok, not see his arse about it. Maybe he’s had a bad day and thought he deserved it more

deydododatdodontdeydo · 09/09/2025 15:24

I was going to say, he'd probably say "oi, where's mine?" then pour himself one, but as we don't generally drink on a Monday evening (or most weekday evenings except Friday), and certainly not so early, he'd probably ask me if everything was ok.

Hmm personally I think that anyone who comes home from work and pours a drink has a drink problem. Don’t care if I get flamed for this. Drinking during the week is a no no, Drinking afternoon/early evening, a no. I have AdHD going through bad perimenopause symptoms and wouldn’t dream of drinking alcohol to help me cope after a stressful day at work If you do rely on alcohol to unwind, you have a drinking problem in my book. The minute you start using alcohol as a crutch, that’s a problem. People don’t seem to realise how damaging alcohol is, a lot of breast cancers are due to drinking alcohol. My cousin just lost her life at 49, had breast cancer, loved her wine & gin. Someone else I worked with died of Brest cancer, she liked her drinking too. Just because it’s legal, doesn’t mean it’s safe to drink it. I think alot of women now have a drinking problem but to them its completely normal life.

Cut and dried then 🤷🏻‍♀️

Bluddyellfire · 09/09/2025 15:22

willitevergetwarm · 09/09/2025 14:50

My DH would join me. He quite often has one poured for me on a Friday evening as he is home first

No were not alcoholics before anyone starts down that road

According to some here you definitely are lol! No offence intended, I like a drink in the week too if I fancy one but it's my body, my money, my early start tomorrow and I'm a grown woman paying my way and keeping on top of everything so who cares? 🍷😁

Rounder888 · 09/09/2025 15:20

My husband would, but that’s because I’m a recovering alcoholic 😂 and my one glass would have been 3 bottles. But aside from that, no. He’ll often have a beer after work on a Thursday or Friday, or I’ll sometimes meet him at the pub on the way home (non alcoholic version for me)

TreeDudette · 09/09/2025 15:20

My partner was once living with an alcoholic and has since been 100% tea-total himself. He is very sensitive to heavy drinking and has some lasting trauma. He'd ask me if my day was that bad (I am not a big drinker) and would likely suggest we went out for me to get a margarita (the only thing I drink, wine is not my tipple!) He has no problem with me drinking, I am an adult and make sensible chouces!

Hoppinggreen · 09/09/2025 15:18

He would say
"glass of wine on a school night? pour me one too then"
But then he isn't a controlling arsehole

Girlmom35 · 09/09/2025 15:18

khlolea · 08/09/2025 19:06

I think we have different views on alcohol, my parents had the occasional glass of wine with dinner and our family socialised with bbq and drink but his mum once went mad when we had a drink in her garden one day.
I think he thinks drinks are for special occasions or holidays but to randomly have a drink on a work night is alcoholic behaviour and totally derogatory

Did you know this was how your husband felt about drinking on ordinairy weekdays, before pouring yourself one?
