What would your husband say if he came home from work and you’d had a drink?

I have had a glass of wine tonight after work, thought why not?
Dh is home and is furious, speaking to me like a disgrace and slamming cupboards.
I now have an uncomfortable silence which isn’t quite a silence because he’s saying he’s not giving me the silent treatment.

My adult daughter and I enjoy a glass of wine every evening before dinner with the dog. It’s a lovely way to wind down, catch up and de-stress.
Tell him he needs to chill!

If you have a glass of wine every evening you are both alcoholics.

Ohthatsabitshit · 09/09/2025 18:36

Mine wouldn’t say anything (or care) any more than if I was having a bar of chocolate or a slice of toast. I’m going to be honest, I’d pour myself another large glass. What a prick. He’s your husband not your jailer.

bert3400 · 09/09/2025 18:36

Mine would say, "did you buy any beers"

Justchillinhere · 09/09/2025 18:35

He'd be surprised because i rarely drink but would be happy that i was relaxing

Hankunamatata · 09/09/2025 18:34

There must be a reason for the way he feels about alcohol?

BeAzureRaven · 09/09/2025 18:33

Wow! Unless you have some sort of drinking problem and had agreed to abstain, that's pretty unacceptable in my opinion. My husband would have said "Can you pour me a glass of that too, please?"

angelfacecuti75 · 09/09/2025 18:33

I have had this reaction as previously my DH had a drinking problem and it just got really bad.
He still drinks but I nearly ended the relationship over it (it wasn't him having one drink now and then -this was to a high level and not like what you are describing- as it is 1 and not excessive etc.)
Is it possible your dh had someone in his life e.g. a parent etc who had a drinking problem or had a bad day and over reacted but it wasn't necessarily about the drinking it was about the other thing and he took it out on you? Either way its a bit OTT and not acceptable. Maybe if you drank every night & to excess or had a drinking problem this would be mildly acceptable but even then its still OTT.

Idontcareboutthestateofmyhair · 09/09/2025 18:33

Think you need to ask whys he's making such a fuss over a glass of wine? Either he's a boring dickhead who thinks you need his permission or he thinks you have a problem? If you don't have a problem, then it's none of his or anyone's business. My hubby would either be jealous if he's on shift pattern (in a jokey way) or join me if he felt like it.

Bambiwithlonglegs · 09/09/2025 18:31

Well, if my husband reacted like that, I’d honestly be questioning if I’d married the right person. How dare he!

Miracle1116 · 09/09/2025 18:30

"Bought you some more (so I don't get sent to the store later)" 😂

Bambiwithlonglegs · 09/09/2025 18:29

Wouldn’t say anything! Why would he!!

Lovehascomeandgone · 09/09/2025 18:29

It’s extremely controlling behaviour. I would just totally ignore his behaviour and get on with my evening. If he isn’t engaging, leave him to it. When you are talking, he needs to be explain himself, he doesn’t get to behave like a child and sulk when he doesn’t like something. Clearly this has worked for him with you in the past.

GardenCatHorror · 09/09/2025 18:28

He'd be confused and a bit worried. For me to drink alone at home- as someone who might go a few months without alcohol- he'd probably think I'd had some very bad news!

He would be surprised, and ask if I was okay… but wouldn’t behave like that.

I don’t drink very often at all, but may just may have a glass of wine at the end of the week once a year. Usually if I’m stressed…. Which is is why he would ask if I was okay.

I don’t understand why he’s behaved like that….. maybe when it blows over ask him. Does he come from a family that drinks? Or know someone with a drinking issue that drank constantly after work?

GiveDogBone · 09/09/2025 18:19

It depends. If I was a high-functioning alcoholic like you probably are, then yes he’d be upset.

What gives you the impression the OP is a high functioning alcoholic?

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 09/09/2025 18:21

He’d either join me or pour me another (or both).
His behaviour is not normal.

Emmamusic3 · 09/09/2025 18:18

Who cares? What is the big deal? he should be saying "hi darling, la la la la, tiddly pom.... and how's your day been? "

LittleMyLabyrinth · 09/09/2025 18:16

Weird. I don't really drink but I didn't think having a glass or at least half a glass of wine of an evening was that unusual. Often I will have a soft drink or kombucha in a wine glass after work because there's just something nice about it. He is out of line.

pizzaHeart · 09/09/2025 18:16

He would ask me
what happened (in a caring and supportive way) but only because me drinking on a school day would mean something happened.

Ex H would’ve laughed. Wouldn’t have joined me as he can’t drink due to his job. But certainly wouldn’t have behaved in the weird way your husband is!

Can’t imagine being judged for that! I often have a glass of wine with dinner, or a cider or g&t in the evenings.

Is he always this uptight?

Skyelils · 09/09/2025 18:13

Wow you had a glass of wine big de al You don’t have to ask permission

SuchiRolls · 09/09/2025 18:11

I rarely drink so he’d say “it’s been a tough day then?” 😬🫣 discuss the day and that would be that. Because as an adult you can make your own decisions and choices. I’d tell him to get a grip and stop acting like a toddler having a tantrum over something that’s none of his business. This is such controlling behaviour!

Nomorechipsforme · 09/09/2025 18:11

He probably bought me the bottle I was drinking from 😝
