Can't Believe What I've Just Seen at a Wedding

Afternoon wedding, on a beach. Bride in traditional wedding dress, guests mostly in smart normal wedding attire.

One guest was in a wedding dress. A proper, full on wedding dress. Strapless, corset back, full length, big full skirt with a TRAIN.

The bride had asked guests not to wear white and it wasn't white but bloody hell, who would do that? She looked amazing in it but I simply can't understand the thought process. I've no idea who she was other than a friend of the bride, close enough to go to the hen night, but I'm pretty sure the bride wouldn't have said this dress was OK if she'd been asked. She wasn't a bridesmaid, literally just a guest with no other role to play at the wedding( unless she's going to step up and sing Don't Cry For Me Argentina at the reception later which is possible I suppose!)

I'm just gobsmacked that someone would do this.

OP posts:

What kind of question is that?

I would assume it’s around cultural differences in wedding attire.

Oh FFS 🤦! I honestly did get a education! Can I just blame the 🍷 I've been mainlining tonight?!

Mystery solved, I was very confused...😅

Are you outside the UK OP? There are as far as I know hardly any places in the UK where you can actually get married on the beach itself (Lusty Glaze in Cornwall is one I know of) so if it's in the UK you might have given away what wedding you're at and roughly where you live. If you're outside the UK obviously there are no such worries.

England.

Scottish marriage laws are totally different and you can be married on any beach.

This is the upcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights, not Great Expectations.

Yes, alongside Jacob Elordi.

Interesting, thank you.

redwinekeepsyousane · 06/09/2025 21:27

DH and I went to a wedding a month before we got married. The bride then wore her dress to our wedding. I thought that was really weird and rude. Not really bothered to make friends with her since then (friend of DH).

Thank you. So not Miss Havisham, then.
Catherine Earnshaw, I'm guessing?

Yes, alongside Jacob Elordi.

I once attended a wedding where the MOB wore a full length white dress with a veil. 😲

This is fucking amazing 🤣🤣

I’m guessing she’s a very close ‘friend’ of the groom!

OTOH friend’s son got married recently and the whole wedding party wore white dresses (the female ones anyway!)

My ex's 'special friend' was, indeed, the only person at our wedding dressed a flowing white outfit 😒 It was floaty white trousers with a floaty white overdress, which she probably thought gave her plausible deniability. Unfortunately for her, XH was far too dense to understand the hidden message! Plenty of the other guests got it, though.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 06/09/2025 21:17

Are they non-British? In some other countries guests dress a lot more full on

CoffeeLipstickKeys · 06/09/2025 21:15

This is peak daily mail fodder, they’ll steal this if you post a pic

Cathandkin · 06/09/2025 21:05

I was at a wedding where someone wore a full skirted white lace dress. It wasn't long, but still. I think sometimes people don't realise.

UnintentionalArcher · 06/09/2025 21:05

@RichardMarxisinnocent It may be limited in England (not sure as I’ve never looked into it), but in Scotland you can get married pretty much anywhere outside in the public domain, as long as you have an authorised celebrant.

You can in Scotland. You can get married pretty much anywhere you like in Scotland.

LetsTryAgainNowThen · 06/09/2025 20:52

Is she foreign? I went to a wedding once where the bride's side were all from a different country and many wore ballgowns.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 06/09/2025 20:49

LaurieFairyCake · 06/09/2025 18:38

What colour was it? Sounds like a ballgown?

I totally agree!

OP I think this is on you. It's up there with people saying 'don't be ignorant' when you're ignoring them. Wedding dresses do not have the monopoly on trains, satin or lace. If it looked like a wedding dress design and was, for example, green, it's a ballgown.

TheGetAlongGang · 06/09/2025 20:49

My mother (who is a narcissist) cannot bear to be on the sidelines-any wedding (or other special occasion) is her day or else

At my brothers wedding she wore black (with just enough purple so she didn't look like she was at a funeral)

She sat and sulked in the corner as nobody gave her all the attention and the bride wore white ('she's no fucking virgin!')

I'd gone nc by the time another brother got wed,but I'm told she wore cream (with just enough pink to not upstage the bride)

It was all for attention, didn't work so she tried to ruin the after the wedding by slagging off the bride behind her back

She wanted my first dd to be christened (I put my foot down and said no which caused no end of trouble-'its MY day!') and I was told she'd chosen her outfit

A full length wedding style dress, complete with veil, flowers and train

Thankfully this didn't happen as she got as far as 'I've booked the church...' and she was firmly told to cancel it

Very odd behaviour

Actually I came home in the 'down time' photos etc. I posted because I was just so surprised by it.

And of course I can't take a photo of a stranger and post it on the internet!!! Christ. But she looks a bit like this, without the straps and with a train.

OP if this is what the dress is like I can’t honestly say it’s exactly a wedding dress, but I do think it was deliberately intended to upstage the bride. Which is unforgivable.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 06/09/2025 20:44

I turned up to an evening do and the MOTB was wearing a long cream dress. I was outraged, but everyone just said “that’s just what Ange is like”.

Cathandkin · 06/09/2025 20:44

No pictures, yet, OP?

Brunettesmorefun · 06/09/2025 20:43

FailingtoJuggle · 06/09/2025 20:35

Ah that’s nice of the guest to do that. Out of interest, what type of dress was it?

It was a knee length dress in pastel colours. The guest was sweet. She kept in the background in the church so as not to spoil the bride’s special day.

Miss Havisham not from the book, I'm guessing. The traditional appearance is definitely not that .
Perhaps they've gone back in time, before she was jilted?
When people refer to "Miss Havisham" they generally mean the woman stuck in time, in her old, ragged dress.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 06/09/2025 20:36

Cathandkin · 06/09/2025 20:33

Not if they're telling her story from Great Expectations. Whoever plays her, the character doesn't look good.

Wish I looked as bad as this. 😂
