@Oblahdeeoblahdoe

This statement implies that you think the website is also intended to be for Mums only.

I'm female, but not a Mum, and I don't plan to be one. Do you think this invalidates my presence here?

Edited

The seeming consensus is Men = Bad, Women = Good.

You should be fine.

What on earth is "womanship"?

A ship full of women

SorcererGaheris · 07/09/2025 00:29

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 05/09/2025 18:13

Well, men can't be mums and it's called mumsnet

Tagline is by parents for parents. Last i checked, men can be parents too.

Btw - and you may want to sit down for this - there are loads of posters who aren't even parents at all!!!

@QueenClinomania

"Btw - and you may want to sit down for this - there are loads of posters who aren't even parents at all!!!"

Yep, I'm one of them. No children and no intention of having them.

Horror of all horrors, I also sometimes buy books (for myself) from the 'children's' section of the bookshop!

XenoBitch · 07/09/2025 00:15

Most of the boards are nothing to do with being a parent or a woman. I think everyone should be welcome here.

SorcererGaheris · 07/09/2025 00:14

Rickyrainfrogcroaks · 05/09/2025 17:02

So why is it called Mumsnet then
It's for mums
If it was for dads to it would be called parent net

@Rickyrainfrogcroaks

Mums are the intended audience. But there's a BIG difference between saying something is for a particular audience/demographic and saying that ONLY people in that demographic can partake of it.

Think of it this way. Children's books are called children's books because the intended audience is children. But no one has ever said that adults can't also read children's books. Many adults do. (I am one of them.)

It's the same with the Mumsnet. The site started out being aimed, primarily, at women, and largely still is, but that doesn't mean that men cannot/should not post here. Nothing in the rules says that it's a female-only space.

if you go by the name, then, as a female myself, I'm not a part of the intended demographic of this site, as I'm not a mother.

Masmavi · 07/09/2025 00:13

Many seem to totally miss the point or think their opinion gives us deep insight into ‘what men think’. I find it irritating

AromanticSpices · 06/09/2025 23:58

Zov · 06/09/2025 21:44

I'm not shocked to hear that @ZanzibarIsland ^ Also, I bet you will struggle to find women posing as MEN on 'MENS' forums. Yet men pose as women on WOMENS fourms. I wonder why? 🤔

When I go into forums that are predominantly men, I take a bit of care not to state that I'm a woman. I have found that this is fairly common in women, particularly after you've been 'online' for a while - nichey ones for music, comedy, cars, etc can often be pretty sexist. It's just not worth the shit you have to deal with.

I'm not 'posing as a man' but I'm not saying either way, and with men being the default human in most of our society (and women as these curious 'others') it's often assumed.

Agreed.

Youdontseehow · 06/09/2025 21:21

Yeah but apparently it’s not fair on the men who seem to really value our opinions on MN…..if only the same was true in real life.

Nothing to do with being "fair" or the "poor men"

It's simply a public forum, where PEOPLE can post. There's nothing to gain from banning half the population, and even less to gain in pretending parenting forum are not the place for men.

If you want a "woman only space", create one? No one is stopping you from starting your own forum. If you believe so many posters would agree with you, your site will be successful from the start surely?

BluePearOntheRocks · 06/09/2025 23:14

kathmacc · 06/09/2025 22:10

It’s called Mumsnet because it’s for Mums. It’s not called “appropriate adult, Dad, Stepmum, Aunt, foster Mum etc” - because it’s a Mum’s group.

so you want a proof that a woman has given birth / adopted a child to be allowed on the forum? Ok then

tell that to MNHQ and let us know how it goes

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 06/09/2025 20:19

Do you think the only involvement men have here is to insert their opinions into threads about VAWG?

If you read the exchange preceeding the post you quoted, the answer to that should be clear.

QueenClinomania · 06/09/2025 22:35

It's called mumsnet because it was started by two mums who worked from their kitchen tables 25 years ago, sockpuppeting like fuck all hours of the day.

Its changed since then.

If the owners of the site say its for everyone then who has the right to say it's not?

Its their site. They started it. They own it. They say everyone is welcome.
Except trolls and twats, obviously.

Things change. They respond to demand. They evolve.

Samsung started as a grocery trading company as an example

Exactly!!

So then it's not just men but childless women who should be banned...

I don't know what your "thought" crimes are, that's between you and whatever deity you believe in, but, as I say, your posting history is very telling.

Just search your name and key words, such as woman, and it's all laid out how you try and minimise and belittle women (such as your little "thought crime" dig, when, in fact it its all laid out in black and white).

I'm sure you're a nice guy, and you were provoked/didn't mean it like that/women can't take a joke though.

100%

And I don't care if SOME women on here 'don't want to be on a women only forum.' Some women do. And nobody has any right to tell them that they have no right to feel this way! No matter how much they would like to

Except that the site itself is openly for anyone...

Which means, you should maybe take your own advice and make a new site just for women if you don't agree with men being legitimately here

NoThanksNeeded · 06/09/2025 22:02

ZanzibarIsland · 06/09/2025 21:39

I don't mind men posting as long as they don't pretend to be women to push their MRA or incel agenda. Let's not pretend this never happens.

Edited

There was also a very famous case of a white woman pretending to black woman...
Don't act like it's a surprise people lie online

NoThanksNeeded · 06/09/2025 22:00

Youdontseehow · 06/09/2025 21:22

I’m not sure and I don’t really care. I’m not a dad and I don’t want to be on dads’ forums. If they’re not active then that’s not my concern.

Edited

But that's pertinent to why they use MN...

NoThanksNeeded · 06/09/2025 21:57

ZanzibarIsland · 06/09/2025 20:43

How do you know?

Because it's happened to me before
