DH has it in his head that we can sell up our convenient-to-everything home and find a detached with at least 1 acre that has a footpath to the nearest village costing less than £1.2 mill and no farther North than Sheffield.

I have NO intention of moving to the country to spend my days in a car. I can't find a way to interrogate property websites to find ones that have footpaths.

I'm right and there's no such thing, yes?

Getting towards retirement.

I totally get the isolation worry - feel that would be mitigated by having a footpath - we both love walking.

An isolated house doesn’t sound like a good idea to me if it’s dependent on a footpath and you’re planning on it being your retirement house. You may both love walking now, but things might look very different for one or both of you in ten or fifteen years' time. Unexpected things can happen healthwise as people get older.

sittingonabeach · 06/09/2025 09:09

Why the need for the footpath? What happens when your mobility becomes an issue?

Odd isn’t it.

The husband has an idea but can’t be arsed to research and provide his wife with any examples the fit the bill.

The Op struggles to utilise right move.

Mumsnetters spend a few minutes searching and come up with multiple examples

But mumsnetters live around the country and know if that is possible in their area. I don’t mind, it’s fun to look at 1.2mil houses and help someone out to boot.

1.2 mil?!? lol

With a fairly easy to meet criteria

I think you need to get a little better at scouring Rightmove.

And no, I’m not going to do your homework.

Thanks so much for all your suggestions. I don't think either of us have ever even been to Shropshire so very interesting to see that it seems to be the place to get what we want. Thank you.

It’s a stunning county, well worth exploring.

5.1 acres, near to a lovely village, on the outskirts of Sheffield and close to masses of open countryside. Here's your unicorn.

try Shropshire:
this is in on the edge of a village, next to the wonderful Severn Valley Country Park and has 1.2 acres.

This is on the edge of a village and near to Shrewsbury which is lovely and has good transport/trains etc for visitors or family coming home (if you have older kids that might be relevant):

This is 450k under budget, stunning and has 0.62 acres.

Another stunner:

Within England not further North than around Sheffield. It wouldn't be that far away to travel to relatives. England is pretty narrow.

So not restriction within England aside from not further north that Sheffield.

Sure? No adult kids / grandchildren you’d like to at least be within a couple of hours of?

Looks like a property worthy of Matt Damon but I can't be doing with the lack of footpath.

YABU for phrasing it in this way entirely to clickbait the Rightmove detectives to do your dirty work for you Wink

I'm sorry but talent like that shouldn't be underutilised. What amazing properties they have been kind enough to share. Lots of food for thought.

(We have discussed buying a flat with a balcony in a ‘ naice’ city like Bath, and a cottage in nearby countryside, so we can flit between them, and eventually pull back to the city when we have to abandon our car)

I won’t be moving anywhere I can’t walk or get an easy, frequent bus to a dentist, supermarket, GP, vet, library, station and post office

if you have to stop driving for any reason, you’re stuffed otherwise

SeaAndStars · 05/09/2025 16:58

Here's another. Footpath 1 mile to village with good facilities - footpath other way leads directly to the whole of Exmoor and the South West Coast Path.

There are literally thousands of these that will fit your bill (for well under your budget leaving you money to keep a bolt hole in town if that's important to you). www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/162686243#/?channel=RES_BUY

CheltenhamLady · 05/09/2025 16:54

Properties such as you mention do exist. If he is really serious then he needs to present some of them to you. Or, ask an agent/several agents to find them for you. I suspect you don't intend to move OP.
