Is this too unpleasant to do even in the circumstances?!

We have to catch a flight this evening and our bedding is not in a good state after a night and day of sickness bug. I have no time to now wash it. Is it too awful to leave it on and wash when we return? It’s cheap bedding and I’m now wondering if we throw it out rather than leave it?!

I always assume that people are sick on flights and have antibacterial wipes and sanitizer to clean everything multiple times throughout the flights. I’m very cautious using the toilet too. I also make sure my children’s areas are sanitised and hands cleaned regularly. Most people will travel if they are ill it’s too expensive to cancel flights and rebook.

Norovirus is airborne and highly contagious, to deliberately infect a plane full of people is awful.
Antibacterial wipes have no impact on viruses.

You’re getting on a plane with a D&V bug? 😟

This.

Very selfish.

Fayaway · 05/09/2025 17:04

OP is scripting the sequel to Snakes on a Plane, it's much scarier.

I would always immediately strip the beds to avoid getting vomit fluids on mattresses. Can’t you put it all through a quick wash (most washers have a 20 minute wash) then throw it over your shower enclosure/ curtain rail/ doors so its fresh? Then do a proper wash when you get back?

This is what I'd do.

MolluscMonday · 05/09/2025 16:49

Jesus.

Bedding in bin liners and take to dump on way to airport.

Order new while you’re away.

Samiloff · 05/09/2025 16:48

On the off-chance that you’re not just a boring troll - don't be silly. In the time it took to write the post you could have bunged it in the washing machine on a rinse/quick wash. At worst it would be musty when you got back and you’d then give it a proper long wash.

But you shouldn’t be spreading your germs on a plane.

OneNewLeader · 05/09/2025 16:40

In that scenario you’re not really focusing on the important bit are you?

Lickityspit · 05/09/2025 16:39

I caught norovirus from someone on a flight and it totally ruined my son’s 21st birthday party for me. Really selfish to get on a plane and potentially infect other people

I don't think this thread went quite the way OP expected!

I think it probably did...

Aye good try 👍

This 🤣

DramaLlamacchiato · 05/09/2025 16:37

Jesus wept, except for when I had babies and toddlers we’ve managed to navigate sick bugs without getting shit and puke all over our beds.

Sounds like going on a flight is irresponsible but I’d either wash the bedding now and rewash on your return or throw it out.

TinyTeachr · 05/09/2025 15:40

DON'T get the flight! For goodness sake you will give it to everyone on the plane!!! If its been so recent that you haven't managed to strip sheets abd give them at least a rinse/half hour wash, you're too ill and infectious to fly. What on earth are you thinking?

People will get sick blame the airplane food, ruined holidays etc etc.. no wonder it spreads as it does 😔

AugustSlippedAwayIntoAMomentInTime · 05/09/2025 16:31

Yes, you are being unreasonable to even be considering ruining everyone else's holiday on the plane. Asshole behaviour.

louderthan · 05/09/2025 16:18

YABVVVVU to even consider getting on a plane tbh.

riversflows · 05/09/2025 16:18

Never mind the laundry, the real issue is the flight. You'll pass on your bug to others and ruin their holiday/work trip.

intoFolklore · 05/09/2025 16:17

YABU to get on a plane when you've had a sickness bug in the last 48 hours, yes

Livingthebestlife · 05/09/2025 16:15

😂 Nearly fell for this. Jeeze I'm getting slower

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 05/09/2025 16:13

She's says sickness bug, not diarrhoea!

I'd strip it and stick in the machine. Wash it when you're back on a hot wash.

Don't chuck perfectly good bedding because you can't wash it right now!!

Whattheduck · 05/09/2025 16:11

I would be more concerned about getting on a flight with a stomach bug and passing it on to other passengers and crew members

TablePourTrois · 05/09/2025 16:11

Imagine you made the wrong decision.
What's the worst that can happen?
🤣🤣🤣

BarbarasRhabarberba · 05/09/2025 16:09

Are you talking about kids or adults? If adults, why the hell didn’t you go to the toilet! Also, agree with others, don’t get on the plane with a D&V bug. If I was a passenger and caught it from you I’d be wishing for your long, torturous demise for a long time.

I flew a few weeks ago with Air India and the entire family in front of us were coughing continuously. I fell asleep and woke and was watching the father who was sated diagonally to me. He was literally coughing up phlegm into sick bags and the air hostess kept running off to bring him more. In the meantime the trolley came around and their children's hands were touching everything and the air hostess told them off. Neither the mother or father noticed as they were too busy coughing their guts up.
In the final hour, people around the man began to realise that he was coughing phlegm into these bags and complained. The air hostess asked him if he had a mask which he didn't. She then asked him to move directly in front of me! Unfortunately, there was only an hour left of the 10 hour flight so the damage had already been done.
We spent a week so unwell on holiday that we had to see a Dr twice and was given antibiotics. My daughter is still coughing now.
I wish I'd had the bravery to complain before the others did but it was a full plane with no other seating.
It was absolutely disgusting. I am fully of the opinion that everybody should wear a mask on planes like during COVID. It's such a contained space that we are breathing everything in. I'll certainly be wearing a mask next time.
People are so so selfish when they get on a plane unwell. Staff should look out for signs as people enter.
So YABU. For travelling whilst sick and for leaving your washing.
Rant over!

I agree it's really nasty to fly when ill. I had a similar situation on a long haul flight a couple of years ago. The guy in the next row was coughing his lungs out. A really painful-sounding hacking cough. Of course, 3 days later in the night before I was due to speak at a work event I came down with COVID: high fever, chills, voice gone. I had to inform the hotel and was confined to my room for days. Horrendous and a substantial (and preventable) cost to the business.

mickandrorty · 05/09/2025 16:06

While you hope this is just a loser with nothing better to do than wind up people on mumsnet, there are some people who are this selfish and grim.
