Aibu and was I just mean?

My patience is very thin regarding people blocking my driveway. It happens most days. I went out twice on Monday and both times I came back a car had parked across it (yes it is very obviously a driveway).

Today one van was parked blocking me in completely. He was there for an hour and I needed to go out, I rang the number on the van and he said he’d be like in a minute. I came outside to get in my car and he made some joke about the rain, pissed off I didn’t react and said why are you even blocking my driveway, you didn’t even come and knock on the door to ask if it was ok.

Then he gave a speech about how he thought he wouldn’t have been there as long as he had and could he stay for 5 more minutes. I said absolutely not, I’m going out and he needs to move his van immediately/

I now feel I was maybe a bit mean. But it happens to me all the time and never has anyone had the decency to knock on my door and say “would you mind”

Absolutely not rude or unreasonable.

I nipped out the other week for 10 minutes.

Came back and a curry’s delivery van is parked on my drive sideways with the tail lift out and down.

I beeped my horn. Waited 1 minute and no one so beeped again.

So I parked the van in and was heading into my house when the man arrived and started shouting at me!

apparently he needed to go NOW as he had deliveries to make and I was just being awkward.

I pointed out my ds in his wheelchair and said he’s made it awkward and as he seemed to think I should wait or just park elsewhere I’m pretty sure he isn’t going to carry on yelling at me for thinking the same.

I moved my car 12 minutes later after he’d waited as long as I had.

Hopefully he won’t do the same thing to someone else soon 😂

My tolerance level for selfishness has gone down as I've got older.

Not that it really helps!

I definitely feel like that! Now I'm mid 40's I am all out of subservience and fucks! I am a lot less willing to be taken for a mug now that I'm older!

IglesiasPiggl · 05/09/2025 17:28

I estimate that 95% of the time people know fine well they are blocking people but just can't be bothered to check first. My next door neighbour had their floors concreted recently. The lorry blocked my driveway, knowing they would be there for several hours and didn't even have the courtesy to ring my doorbell and check whether I needed to get out during that time. Twats.

Raquelos · 05/09/2025 17:16

Yeah, you probably were a bit mean, but you really shouldn't feel bad about it. There is nothing wrong with correctly directed meanness when faced with an inconsiderate twat IMO, it's the only way some people will get the message that they're out of order.

Iwantanhouseelf · 05/09/2025 16:59

You are perfectly reasonable!
We have an end terrace house with a drive. The rest of the terraces do not. There is empty space in front of all of these houses and delivery vans still park in front of my driveway. It drives me mad! Even worse, they are usually delivering to one of these houses so have to walk past the empty spaces that they could have parked in to get to the house and then walk back so it's not like it's saving them time either. Yesterday a van 'broke down' blocking my drive, it's a good job it had been moved by the time I got back from work or I would have lost my temper and let rip.

Whiskeypot · 05/09/2025 01:12

He was taking the piss so you were 100% right.

Masmavi · 05/09/2025 01:08

Why are you worried about being ‘mean’? He parked unreasonably and you have a perfect right to be able to leave yoir home at any time. What if someone had been ill and you’d had to leave quickly? I’d have kept calling him until he appeared.

WhoaaaBodyform · 04/09/2025 23:49

Canwegobacktobegin · 04/09/2025 17:52

I think because he tried to be nice by making a joke about the rain and then I was just not having it.

Making a joke about the rain wouldn’t excuse his shit behaviour of blocking your drive.

You were perfectly reasonable unless there’s more to this story and you told him you wished he was dead or something.

NotAhotWeatherPerson · 04/09/2025 23:44

You weren't mean. They shouldn't have done it in the first place.

I once called someone parked across my driveway when I had to go out and told them they had five minutes before it was towed (which I meant). It was gone in two.

If you put lipstick on one person’s car, it might deter them. But they might return with some dog shit for your car door handles. Additionally, lipstick on one car isn’t going to deter other cars. Plus is kind of a waste and destruction of lipstick. Better to get signs.

Signs 🙄

longtompot · 04/09/2025 23:13

Yanbu and you weren't mean to the van driver who blocked you in. Not only is it annoying it's illegal, or a civil offence. However, as far as I know, there is no law about someone parking across your drive (assuming there are no double yellow lines) when it is empty, it's just really annoying.

Lipstick on the windscreen is difficult to remove - most inconvenient

Yanbu people always park across my drive and it pisses me right off.
What can you actually do about it? Does anyone know?
Apart from asking them to move, say they've left their car there, what can you do about it?
I'm intrigued because I'm getting sick of it myself op.

blueclip · 04/09/2025 22:54

No I don’t think you were mean.

Even though it’s obviously a driveway, you need prominent and multiple signs asking people not to block it.

Signs do make a difference. It’s visuaL and makes people think just enough to go and park somewhere else. Probably across someone else’s driveway. There are loads and loads of signs on Amazon etc.

Doughyou · 04/09/2025 22:50

No you weren’t mean enough. I have this same problem and it drives me crazy. I regularly swear and shout at the people who do it!

jonthebatiste · 04/09/2025 22:49

You weren’t being mean. He was. You didn’t do anything wrong. He did everything wrong. Why would you think the opposite? What is stopping you from seeing the truth of the situation? Is it conditioning? Low self esteem? A domineering man in your life? You are a person who someone else has tried to take advantage of. You weren’t rude, you weren’t ungracious - and even if you were, no more so than he who knew he was doing something that was both of those things.

Pissenlit · 04/09/2025 22:47

No. I called the police station last time someone blocked me in (didn’t know who it was, and it was there for about 12 hours) and they called to her door.

Movingonup313 · 04/09/2025 22:46

He was only being nice to butter you up. Is there space for you to not park in your driveway, let someone block you in then you park so as to block them in? Not sure if that would work. I suppose would only be effective if same people parking across your drive

MrBlobbyScaresMe · 04/09/2025 22:44

SweatyBettyAgain · 04/09/2025 22:30

Do all of you who experience people parking across your driveways have drop kerbs? I can understand people parking across driveways when they haven't actually got a drop kerb?

Yes I have a dropped curb, so that makes it illegal to park across it right..? What can you actually do in this situation?

Hmmmm. It's part of the planning process and you don't have 'permission' to cross the pavement in a vehicle to access the road, without paying for the relevant approvals and to have a dropped kerb installed.

Indeed. I wonder if that's why so many people get their "driveways" blocked... because they aren't actually proper driveways to begin with? They're perhaps just front gardens with a paved or gravelled front of house!

No we’ve all just been far too conditioned to be nice to people in these situations. No need to feel guilty at all ❤️

Id love to know why the 3% who voted so think that YABU.

THIS!!! I'm hoping they pressed the wrong one by mistake . . .

Good for you!! YANBU at all. That van driver was trying his luck - what is it with these people? Their brains are in their pants. It's infuriating and in the UK it's a traffic offence to cause an obstruction.

I had a guy block my drive, but go to a house 150yds away, there were no other cars parked on the street including the house he visited!?! (we're on a main road where everyone has offstreet parking). I wanted to get a white line painted to stop this BUT if you have that even you can't park on it in front of your own house 🙄

This country has become insane.
