Couple having sex in front of window

My children’s bedrooms looks out toward a house in the distance that has a bedroom in which looks like a converted loft. They have big floor to ceiling windows and NO curtains.
We were told by my neighbour once that he saw the occupiers there having sex in full view in front of the window - this was during an afternoon.
My husband also witnessed their act just last night when settling the kids to bed. It’s not hard to miss because their light is on and they’re BIG windows. My husband said he saw a lot of detail.
Not to sound prude but I’m really concerned about my children one day seeing them doing it. I have both sons and a daughter and don’t really want to expose them to sex in this way.

I’ve been told I don’t really have much right to complain because it’s within their own home but I am thinking of writing a letter to politely ask if they would be able to get some blinds or curtains installed.
If they ignore it, is there anything else I could do?
What would you do?

I am surprised at these comments.i shared a house a long time ago with a man who was given a caution for walking around naked in his bedroom. The only reason I was aware of it as I was off work and answered the door to the police. Apparently he had been asked repeatedly by neighbours to close his curtains as they could see him from their house when getting dressed. The police took it seriously and arrested him for indecent exposure so did the landlord who asked him to leave.
I would definitely ask them to close their curtains

I always wonder if some posters here like arguing the toss and wouldn't have the same opinion in real life.

Why blame the husband?

Talk about gaslighting- many posters here would get a gold medal for it.

They definitely wouldn’t

What is everyone going on about? You can’t just ‘do what you want in your own house’ ffs. Is it ok for someone to stand bollock naked at their window and masturbate for everyone to see? No. No it’s not! And it’s not OP’s job to make sure her kids have to hide behind curtains in their own home to avoid them seeing a pair of idiots shagging. You’re will within your rights to phone the police if you want. You’re not allowed to just bang away in full view of people … believe it or not! Ffs.

This. There was a case local to me where a man was prosecuted for indecent behaviour in his house which could be clearly seen from the street.

AlertEagle · 31/08/2025 11:12

To everyone shaming ops husband for seeing them (not just him but other neighbours too) how would you react if it was facing your own childrens bedroom would you just draw the curtains and call your husband a creep or would you actually do something,

People calling ops husband a creep but see nothing wrong with two adults shagging infront of the window with no blinds and lights on 👍

springissprung2025 · 31/08/2025 11:11

A young person I know ( with some learning difficulties) was standing at his bedroom window naked on a regular basis. Neighbours called the police who said it was an offence as had been viewed by children in the street. He was given a stern telling off

SerendipityJane · 31/08/2025 11:11

It’s really weird and disingenuous that posters on here are telling you to ignore it.

It's AIBU - as much for entertainment as advice (which is what the Legal section is for). And sometimes as puerile as it is to some, it can be amusing to see people being outraged. Especially over what is in essence a story, and especially when none of us is in possession of all the facts.

😀

Don't be ridiculous. There is no "sex show". Some people who live in a house some distance away are living their lives. Anyone who doesn't like it may buy their own blinds or curtains.

OP, if your husband saw a lot of detail, he must have spent a lot of time watching.

Why’s the husband the pervert in this? According to this, he can stand and watch them and have a wank and it’s not a problem as he’s in his own house.

@EmmaMaria To be honest if anyone can see them simply by standing at their own window, it's not right.

Public decency and all that.

HelpMeGetThrough · 31/08/2025 11:10

What would you do?

Tell your husband to put the binoculars down.

Mirabai · 31/08/2025 11:09

butterdish93 · 31/08/2025 10:46

Don’t write them a letter. You need to knock on their door and tell them it’s wrong.
they know what they’re doing. But it’s not ok to expose children to sex. And they need strongly reminding of that.

Nooo absolutely not. Excruciating. Just write a polite respectful anonymous letter letting them know they can be seen by children. They’re probably not aware.

LovelyLuluu · 31/08/2025 11:09

How far away are they? You've not said.

If they are over the road(ish) then I think you should drop them a note from a 'concerned neighbour' pointing out they can be seen.

If they are 1/4 mile away and only visible by standing at your window and 'searching' for them as you've heard they do this.

The distance is the key to this but even if YOU are too far away to complain are their other houses closer?

There is a public decency law so maybe think of that?

If a man was stood wanking at the window while kids are outside, people would rightly be in uproar. But a couple having sex with lights on and blinds open where kids could see, and everyone thinks they have the right to do what they want in their own house? Madness.

And would they comment, that the women were watching with binoculars and wanking to it?

So PPs think it is OK to put on live sex shows? I’m not sure it is. It sounds like indecent exposure to me.

It’s not like OP has gone looking for it, or snuck into their garden to watch. She’s in her own home.

Robin67 · 31/08/2025 11:06

I would not care about seeming to be a prude. I would write a letter to them. It won't do any harm.

I don't know if doing it in front of the window with no curtains and the light on would count as indecent exposure.

There is a thread somewhere on here where a lady had an elderly man completely nude in either his garden or his doorway and the police would not intervene as he was doing nothing wrong. Then he started masturbating and the police did have the authority to intervene. They told him off essentially but didn't charge him, just warned him, and it stopped. I would not expect them to be in genuine trouble for this. However, the embarrassment might cause them to invest in curtains.

dogcatkitten · 31/08/2025 11:06

Looking it up it may be your DH' offence for looking!

In the UK, it is generally not illegal to have sex in your own home with the curtains open, as long as you are in a private residence and there is no child present who is harmed by the act. However, it can become a criminal offense under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 if you are observing another person's private sexual act for sexual gratification without their consent, which could apply in a situation where your neighbor is exposed and looking.

Just because they are physically in their own home doesn’t make it acceptable to show the public what they are doing, and it sounds as though they are getting a thrill out of it. Huge windows, no curtains and leaving the lights on? Honestly, why are people’s standards so low these days that they think this is ok? It’s horrible for others to see, and especially children.
I would write to them first and tell them to get some bloody curtains!

Or turn the bloody light off.

Can’t believe some people think this is fine.

DysmalRadius · 31/08/2025 10:24

You could put window film on the kids windows so they get all the light without the floorshow.

Edited

For goodness sake why should OP have to??

OP put an anonymous letter through to start with (post it if you don't want to go to their house) saying something like:

Whislt we're all very happy for you that you clearly have a thriving sex life, please invest in some blinds so my children don't also have to be privvy to it.

I'm a police officer. Just because something is technically occurring inside a private dwelling doesn't automatically mean no offence has taken place. I had to go and give strong words of advice to a young ish bloke wandering around his flat completely stark bollock naked and people were keeping their kids indoors because of it. He was mortified tbf. Hopefully your neighbours will be the same when you send the letter.

Nesbi · 31/08/2025 11:06

Weird how many people on here think indecent exposure/outraging public decency is funny/reasonable/the fault of the “creepy” person who is exposed to it (by people who will be well aware of what they are doing and appear to have no qualms about the possibility of kids seeing them).

FishPie2 · 31/08/2025 11:05

The police came and removed a man who used to live near us who was stood naked in his window.
He used to do this when it was time for the local bus at tea time and as soon as it was reported to the police they came almost immediately. (this was only a couple of years ago so they do take it seriously).

I live in a terraced house and the gardens are so close together that when you're out in the back you can see into neighbours' houses, which is why I keep my blinds down, but not everyone does and I saw a live performance on the floor of nextdoor's conservatory when I was hanging out my washing complete with sound effects "Yes Andy don't stop Andy". Terrible! They left the lights on at night when they were at it.
