Couple having sex in front of window

doremifaso · 31/08/2025 10:05

My children’s bedrooms looks out toward a house in the distance that has a bedroom in which looks like a converted loft. They have big floor to ceiling windows and NO curtains.
We were told by my neighbour once that he saw the occupiers there having sex in full view in front of the window - this was during an afternoon.
My husband also witnessed their act just last night when settling the kids to bed. It’s not hard to miss because their light is on and they’re BIG windows. My husband said he saw a lot of detail.
Not to sound prude but I’m really concerned about my children one day seeing them doing it. I have both sons and a daughter and don’t really want to expose them to sex in this way.

I’ve been told I don’t really have much right to complain because it’s within their own home but I am thinking of writing a letter to politely ask if they would be able to get some blinds or curtains installed.
If they ignore it, is there anything else I could do?
What would you do?

I’d confiscate DH’s binoculars, for a start.

NeelyOHara · 31/08/2025 11:19

So the children have to have their curtains closed night and day?
That’s reasonable.

Mental isn't it? People going about their daily life must be the ones to adapt their normal reasonable behaviour to facilitate exhibitionists. More and more I don't believe many posters on here are authentic at all.

BrickBiscuit · 31/08/2025 11:22

They are commiting an indecency offence if (a) on view, (b) sexual in content, and (c) deliberate. If they repeat it after being notified (some have suggested posting a letter - I would only get involved anonymously myself), they meet all three. Report to the police online.

Greenwriter76 · 31/08/2025 11:21

They definitely know they can be seen, they’re doing it by a huge, unobscured window with the lights on 😅

It’s quite an easy fix for you to safeguard your children from this - put up blinds or window film to obscure the view from their rooms. When they’re going to bed I would expect the blinds to be down or curtains drawn anyway.

We have some good, inexpensive Venetian effect material blinds which you can adjust so they are fully or partially open or closed. B&Q etc do them.

I‘m not sure whether the couple doing it are braking any public indecency laws because they are so obviously doing it in plain sight - maybe you could research if you wanted to go down that route (sorry didn’t see the pps about this before posting)

thebabayaga · 31/08/2025 11:21

Public Order Act 1986 (Section 5)
Outraging Public Decency (Common Law)
Sexual Offences Act 2003 (Section 66)

It's possible it could be illegal for them to be doing this, depending on if they seem to be deliberately performing the act knowing or intending for people to see.

I'd just report them to the police, they already know what they're doing, probably get a kick out of it.

GenieGenealogy · 31/08/2025 11:21

Posters are being deliberately disingenuous to try to appear "cool". It's a very weird aspect of this forum.

Also the OP said "in the distance" and the oddbods are queuing up to make oh so clever quips about binoculars.

I read the OP as the house being at the bottom of the garden, across the road, round the corner - not RIGHT next door, or a side window of one house looking into the side window of another house. Unless you are particularly hard of thought, you can imagine houses you may have been in where you can clearly see into someone's kitchen from your kitchen. As I come down the stairs, I can see the upper landing of my neighbour's house which is about 10 feet away. If you have a back garden, which backs onto someone else's back garden, and they have a massive glass extension on the back with big windows, of COURSE you are going to be able to see into those rooms from the rooms at the back of your house. Especially when it's dark and their lights are on. You would clearly be able to see (as the OP says) that they were "going at it doggy style".

You do need to address this OP, either anonymously or by reporting to the police.

PumpkinSpiceAndEverythingNice · 31/08/2025 11:21

What would happen if OP was recording the view from her window and posted it online? Is that fair game too?

Just close your curtains?

They can do what they want in their house. Your responsibility to make sure your children don't see.

So the children have to have their curtains closed night and day?
That’s reasonable.

Weekmindedfool · 31/08/2025 11:19

LovelyLuluu · 31/08/2025 11:15

Is that a joke?
In the distance means nothing.

Could be 100 yards or half a mile.

And unless there are no houses any closer, someone else is surely able to see them.

Indeed, the actual distance will certainly be important if it were to go to court for example.
The other side of a residential street vs 300m away would potentially be viewed very differently. I note OP has refused to respond on the requests for the distance.

usedtobeaylis · 31/08/2025 11:19

I wouldn't want my children to see it but actually I wouldn't want to see it either and that is really an ok thing. There are a hundred different ways I could view people having sex if I want to but I don't want to. If you're the one having sex it's incumbent on YOU to do so privately.

CunningLinguist2 · 31/08/2025 11:18

heldinadream · 31/08/2025 10:24

Light on and big windows?
It's deliberate. It's exhibitionism.
I'd be tempted to get the police to have a word.

And what would you want the police to do exactly?

MulberryMoon · 31/08/2025 11:18

banananas1999 · 31/08/2025 10:42

Exhibitionists, they know what they are doing and find people looking at then a turn on. No different than pervs who show their ding dongs etc to kids in public. Call the police and let them take it from there.

I agree

EmmaMaria · 31/08/2025 11:06

Don't be ridiculous. There is no "sex show". Some people who live in a house some distance away are living their lives. Anyone who doesn't like it may buy their own blinds or curtains.

OP, if your husband saw a lot of detail, he must have spent a lot of time watching.

Most people on planet Earth enjoy shagging and understand basic etiquette around discretion, rule number one being that you don't do it where there's even the slightest chance of children seeing you. You're not " cool" or " sex positive" for thinking this is acceptable.

I was subtly (maybe too much so) noting that the critical piece of this story has yet to be supplied.

florizel13 · 31/08/2025 11:17

YetanotherNC25 · 31/08/2025 10:16

You could not look? Your DH has clearly watched them ‘in the distance’ to see that level of detail. Close your curtains if you don’t want to see.
They’re allowed to have sex in their house. They’re also allowed to to choose not to have curtains spoiling their floor to ceiling windows.
And don’t write to them or you’ll sound even more like a prude.

Also who said OP doesn't have the right to complain...her husband? 😄 it's understandable she doesn't want her kids to see though, and if this couple are doing it in daylight the kids curtains probably won't be closed

suitcasesarepacked · 31/08/2025 11:17

doremifaso · 31/08/2025 10:46

Yes exactly and I’m not going to change my behaviour to avoid looking out my own damn windows. We like watching sunsets and identifying the stars in the skies with our children - without having o run the risk of seeing someone doing it doggy style ffs

That’s exactly what we felt too. In your case, I’d write a letter telling them that neighbours, including children, can see them. It’s not acceptable and unless they take measures to keep their private life private, you will involve the police to protect children.

If they think they are so far away no one can see, they’ll be mortified. If they’re doing it deliberately they might be concerned about a police visit.

BadWoIf · 31/08/2025 11:17

Honestly, some of the responses on here!

You're not a prude, OP, and I wouldn't want my kids being able to see the neigbours having sex just be looking out of the window.

I think the first step is to pop a note through their letterbox explaining that you can clearly see their intimate moments from your kids' bedroom windows and suggesting that they install curtains or a blind to use at these times.

If that didn't work, then yes, I think speaking to the police is reasonable.

If you still have no joy, perhaps a leylandii hedge at the bottom of your garden would do the trick. Or a tall, fast-growing bamboo perhaps.

HelpMeGetThrough · 31/08/2025 11:16

revising in sexual activity.

Thats one way to get the knowledge in.

skyeisthelimit · 31/08/2025 11:15

To all the PP that think this is fine, do you have sex in front of your children ?

OP, of course it's not OK. Could you ring 101 and get some police advice on it? I'm sure people can be arrested for public indecency if they have sex in full view of other people whether in their own home or not.

Edited to say I just read the post from the police officer who said that police would take it seriously.

Try an anonymous note to start with, post it to them so not caught on Ring doorbell etc, and if they carry on, then contact police.

You can't keep your curtains drawn all the time just in case they fancy a bit.

AlertEagle · 31/08/2025 11:11

People calling ops husband a creep but see nothing wrong with two adults shagging infront of the window with no blinds and lights on 👍

Victim blaming is oh so fashionable these days. I guess all these people who think it’s perfectly acceptable for kids to be exposed to a neighbour’s live sex show from their bedroom window are the kind of people who wander around naked at home and have sex whenever and wherever it takes their fancy, no matter if their own kids see them at it, they’re in their own homes so can do what they like.

KimberleyClark · 31/08/2025 11:14

I would be seriously tempted to take a few photos with my telephoto lens and post them anonymously through their door. But wouldn't actually do it.

TheCurious0range · 31/08/2025 11:14

I'd put a note through the door saying you're sure they're not aware but they can be clearly seen engaging in sexual activity when they are in their bedroom by neighbours including from your children's bedroom. Then if it carries on, they don't put blinds up or similar you know they are doing it deliberately and can report to police. It is illegal to engage in sexual activity even in private premises when it can be seen eg the man masturbating in his bedroom knowing the double decker bus is due

SerendipityJane · 31/08/2025 11:13

How far away are they? You've not said.
