Couple having sex in front of window

doremifaso · 31/08/2025 10:05

My children’s bedrooms looks out toward a house in the distance that has a bedroom in which looks like a converted loft. They have big floor to ceiling windows and NO curtains.
We were told by my neighbour once that he saw the occupiers there having sex in full view in front of the window - this was during an afternoon.
My husband also witnessed their act just last night when settling the kids to bed. It’s not hard to miss because their light is on and they’re BIG windows. My husband said he saw a lot of detail.
Not to sound prude but I’m really concerned about my children one day seeing them doing it. I have both sons and a daughter and don’t really want to expose them to sex in this way.

I’ve been told I don’t really have much right to complain because it’s within their own home but I am thinking of writing a letter to politely ask if they would be able to get some blinds or curtains installed.
If they ignore it, is there anything else I could do?
What would you do?

I had an elderly uncle that like to walk around with no clothes on. He got a warning letter (I think from the police - maybe the council). This was within his own home so anyone who reported him must’ve seen him through the window.

Theroadt · 31/08/2025 11:50

So next time you see it nip round and lean on their doorbell until they are interrupted

Emptyandsad · 31/08/2025 11:50

Shelly369 · 31/08/2025 11:45

A mile away?

Just giving two extremes to make the point. I personally wouldn't call the house at the bottom of my garden 'a distance away' either. We don't know what the OP means

Rosyredapples · 31/08/2025 11:50

A quick google suggests that people can be charged with indecent exposure even if they are in their own home, so I would suggest contacting the police on the non emergency number to see if they would send an officer round to have a quick word. The threat of prosecution if it happens again might be enough to stop them.

TheUsualChaos · 31/08/2025 11:50

I'd write a note saying they've been seen on more than one occasion by neighbours and that if my DC see them I will be reporting them to police. In fact scrap that, I think I'd just go straight to a police report. What's the point in turning it into a game for them. There's no way they aren't aware people can see them through a massive window.

jeaux90 · 31/08/2025 10:22

I’d write a letter.

This is what I would do. x

Shelly369 · 31/08/2025 11:49

Of course, the benny hill type responses are all par for the course.

27pilates · 31/08/2025 11:48

If it’s a mile away, how would OP and her family be able to see clearly ? 🤦‍♀️Don’t be silly.
It’s clearly within eyeline and noticeable.
Some husbands/fathers would be round at that house like a flash sorting that particular issue out.

KimberleyClark · 31/08/2025 11:48

Posters are being deliberately disingenuous to try to appear "cool". It's a very weird aspect of this forum.

Agree. It was the same on the thread about the DH wanking in bed beside his wife.

blueclip · 31/08/2025 11:48

Moveoverdarlin · 31/08/2025 10:23

My husband said he saw a lot of detail.

*LOL! Whilst clutching his binoculars and furiously wanking.

Best comment 🤣

seriously though op, it’s not the end of the world. Your kids are likely to be more focussed on their own activities. Even if they did see, you could explain in a child friendly manner. these people are in their own home, although they do seem a bit exhibitionist to be doing this with gigantic visible windows there.

they are very unlikely to install curtains/blinds imo. It would be very expensive for a large/awkward window.

MsVisual · 31/08/2025 11:48

Had the same thing with neighbours of ours. I was so shocked I nearly dropped my binoculars

CunningLinguist2 · 31/08/2025 11:18

And what would you want the police to do exactly?

Have a word with them about indecent exposure, flashing etc- they must be aware they have neighbours and dont like in a detached house in the middle of a forest.

MissMoneyFairy · 31/08/2025 11:45

Gingernessy · 31/08/2025 11:42

If you can see the detail that clearly video them and post it on all social media you can think off 😂(Although you might make their day!)

Do not do this revenge porn

Gingernessy · 31/08/2025 11:45

Emptyandsad · 31/08/2025 11:43

Yeah, don't do this

I was joking hence the emoji

Tbf, we don't know if they're disgusting exhibitionist or not, because OP isn't telling us how far away the house is. I would imagine if it was a mile away, they probably have a reasonable expectation of privacy. If it's just at the bottom of the garden, then not so much

The phrase 'a distance away' means different things to different people, dependent on context.

A mile away?

MaryMungoMidgley · 31/08/2025 11:43

This surely is a police matter but the police don't do anything about organised shoplifting so I doubt you would get much from them.
It is appalling, then again you could open an only fans account, live stream it and make some money🤷🏻‍♀️

Don’t agree with some of the replies on here -they’re disgusting exhibitionists to do that. Lots of people would march round and have it out with them if their children were in eyeline of that behaviour.
Report, write a letter, go round and confront but I wouldn’t MYOB as lots of people have advised. It’s weird and anti-social.

TinyGingerCat · 31/08/2025 11:41

It’s one of 2 things. Either they have no idea people can see them or they do and they are getting off on the fact. I’d drop a letter round saying just FYI we can see you having sex. If they didn’t realise it will then stop, if they do realise and like this they will keep doing it. If you see them doing it again after you’ve told them, I’d report it to the police then as you have clear evidence of exhibitionism and they can’t claim they didn’t know people can see them.

YetanotherNC25 · 31/08/2025 10:16

You could not look? Your DH has clearly watched them ‘in the distance’ to see that level of detail. Close your curtains if you don’t want to see.
They’re allowed to have sex in their house. They’re also allowed to to choose not to have curtains spoiling their floor to ceiling windows.
And don’t write to them or you’ll sound even more like a prude.

Are you implying her DH is a perve rather than worrying about his children? It is not prudish to not want them to see a live sex show, which is indecent exposure.

Weekmindedfool · 31/08/2025 11:38

Emptyandsad · 31/08/2025 11:37

Yup, that's the issue here: what it does to the house prices...

🤣🤣🤣

You should close your curtains but not the people putting on a live sex show, typical Mumsnet 😆

Exactly. How is this even feasible? Yes, the OP can put privacy stuff on the children’s window but how does that help at other windows the children may look out of or when they go outside. It’s exhibitionism or the neighbours are unaware ((unlikely) so, if so, need to be made aware.
