I like to imagine it as a club consisting solely of Ben Affleck 's ex-wives.

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle You can't just say "No dur it isn't a political critique because I think it's lazy" when I have just carefully explained the nature of the political critique.

Lazy would be me saying "hahaha gammons are idiots" without offering you an explanation of why it is a legitimate satire.

Do you not think it's reasonable to satirise privileged outrage?

It's a lazy, hackneyed phrase which gets trotted out as some sort of gotcha. It's completely unneccesary. Make your point using actual arguments- not spewing out a brainless soundbite.

I dunno .. tbh I thought you’d use your own discretion to interpret

like I said upthread - someone who posts wine o clock etc on a Friday afternoon on Facebook ?

Think it’s weird for anyone to share their weekend plans on Facebook in 2025. I don’t care if you like a drink on the weekend, but just have your wine, no need to announce it.

WaitWhatWhatWait · 31/08/2025 10:12

FarFarAwayTrain · 31/08/2025 04:58

Yes EXACTLY!!! You’ve nailed it !

Glass of vino with this one !!

Right, so the whole thing is that you hate prosecco 🥂 and anyone called Jen.

'Gammon' is a political critique.

It's about privileged older men displaying outrage at progressive things in society. It's a bit rude to say their faces are bright pink, true, but it's a Hogarthian perspective. Their fine living, age and experience, instead of giving them wisdom, have given them red-faced apoplectic outrage - they could solve the problem of looking like angry pigs bu changing both their mood and their opinions.

'Karens' are also people who are rude and entitled, and I don't really mind the name as much - I do think it risks putting all middle aged women in a stereotype as the name for the problem is the name of actual women. If they were called 'Spewing pipes of vitriol' or something that would be better, for me! It is worth satirising and holding up to ridicule people who want to see the manager and get very angry for no reason. Just not by personal name, or any characteristic they can't help, like height or race or whatever.

Something like huns is also classist and focuses on stuff women like to do, so that's a bit rude too in my book. But huns to me are also people who lack critical thinking and have rows on social media, and again, it's named after something a person would say, not who they are. For me it can be legit satirical as it goes along with some anti science things like anti vax or antisocial behaviour like "your baby your rules hun".

Prosecco Jen isn't something I would say. "Wine o clock women" might be ok if it's a series of behaviours we need to call out. But I would still question why we need to call out the behaviour through a satirical name. they're not hurting anyone. It's just taste that you don't share.

Other behaviours often found in socialised female groups, like "Queen Bee" are perfectly fine to lampoon.

No it isn't. It's a lazy, unthinking hackneyed phrase. A pity you can't see that.

All of this is Hogarthian. He captured lots of stereotypes and characteristics.

People always have and always will. Its the human condition.

Pretty much all comedy is based on observations and stereotypes to some extent.

Assume this is some kind of slightly downmarket female version of champagne Charlie?

It's a horrible expression too used by people too lazy and stupid to form a real argument but no one is named Gammon.

I sneer at loads of stuff on social media...in my head obviously. I wouldn't comment directly

Making memories
my kids, my world
Prosecco o'clock
Holibobs
Cringe "inspirational" quotes

I honestly thought loads of people did

I just unfollow people who I find myself sneering at.

Deadringer · 31/08/2025 01:16

Oh I read the op as prosecco jeans, was curious as to what style of jeans that might be. Silly me

You are not alone! mind you, I get confused with all the different sorts of jeans that are around now, in my day as long as they were proper Levi 501 you didn’t have to worry. But thank goodness Prosecco jeans are not a thing, now I only need to work out what boyfriend jeans are. And Prosecco Jans as well of course.

@FarFarAwayTrain
Why "Prosecco Jen"? Is it a term you have heard somewhere or something you made up? Why specifically "Jen"?

My lovely sister in law is a Jen, she likes Prosecco. She isn't on any social media but would likely put something along the "Wine O'clock" type post if she was. So? It's not the kind of thing I would do, but why, why, why do we have to sneer and mock other women's choice of words and decide they are cringy? Who are you to judge? It's not "lighthearted fun", is it? It's mean, sneery and quite frankly boring and tiresome.

I believe that Bolt is enjoying his retirement. I was never lucky enough to spot him at the station though.

Bolt now has a new friend called Buddy.

They're both living the dream in a rural retreat suitably served by a competent slave.

Gosh you sound fun!

I mean my father was an alcoholic and it killed him...so yeah I don't find talking/joking about alcohol particularly funny. I don't care if people want to drink...that's a personal choice. Even I very occasionally have a drink. But no, it doesn't make anyone fun or interesting.

paddyclampster · 31/08/2025 09:51

Comedycook · 31/08/2025 09:32

I absolutely detest the drinking culture in the uk...whether that's men or women. What I especially cannot stand is people, male or female, who find it hilarious to post about their drinking as if they're being either naughty, cheeky or somehow different...oooo check me out, cheeky prosecco, beer o'clock...it's not funny. It's pathetic.

Gosh you sound fun!

I don’t know what you mean by ‘do we like them’ though? They’re all different people, so me liking them or not would depend on all sorts of aspects of their personality, not just their propensity to post ‘it’s wine o clock!’
I don’t actually have any friends who do this, so maybe that means I don’t like them, who knows 🤷🏻‍♀️.
ETA I don’t like Prosecco much though. Much prefer Cava.

RampantIvy · 31/08/2025 09:36

TwinklyWrinkly · 31/08/2025 09:21

Sadly "Pub O'clock" Felix had to be put to sleep after a short illness and Bolt has now retired as they have closed Huddersfield station for upgrading and it's a bit dangerous for him. Sad days... 😭

Do you mean “huns” OP? Cos that’s what I immediately thought of. Hun culture is a thing, they love Prosecco. I don’t think it’s considered offensive cos most of them call themselves huns.

Live laugh love 😂

I don't actually like the term Karen and wouldn't use it...but the idea that you go through life without ever paying attention to how people behave, whether certain stereotypes ring true or without ever making any kind of social commentary sounds rather disingenuous to me.

It’s perfectly possible to discuss people's behaviour and make social commentary without creating or perpetuating stereotypes using perfectly (previously) innocuous names.

I can hear myself sounding very prissy and tight-arsed about this but I know a Karen whose life has really been blighted by the new "meaning" of her name.

EatMoreChocolate44 · 31/08/2025 09:34

Yes I do like prosecco and people who drink prosecco. And I do like people called Jennifer. Win win. 😂🙈
