This isn’t a funny prank is it?

I’m (f54) really annoyed with my partner (64m). I just called him as he was meant to be back after a couple of hours for a lunchtime drink in town with a bloke from work and that persons friends who I don’t know. Not bothered about him being out later as was just calling to see if he wanted dinner… but someone (who I don’t know) answered the phone and said he’s been taken to hospital. I said “what? Seriously? What’s happened” and he said yeah he’s in hospital. I said you best not be being a dick and he just burst out laughing and passed the phone to my partner who called me back and was annoyed and thinks I’m overreacting. I never call him when he’s out or set any restrictions as he’s an adult but I wanted to check if he wanted dinner making… and as he’s 3 hours late home it gave me a real fright to hear that as I’ve only met the bloke once in passing and I didn’t recognise the voice. My partner is drunk and telling me it was funny and to lighten up.. and have I put my hrt on.. which has made me really annoyed,

aibu - Jokes are meant to be funny surely? I also get to decide what makes me laugh and for all he knew I could be calling to tell him a family member was unwell as I never call when he’s out and he knows this.

Not funny.

Don't cook his dinner.

Go to the cinema for the evening.

No it’s not funny at all.

Pranks/jokes are meant to be funny.

However, you know he is ok and so I would just drop it.

I am of the opinion that there is no good 'prank'. They are all unkind and designed to upset at least one person. The 'isn't it funny' bit is supposed to come from the relief of tension when the prank is revealed. Except that it's more likely to make most people angry than amused.

Endofyear · 29/08/2025 19:03

Absolutely not funny and your husband is being a prick, probably because he's drunk. Make yourself a lovely dinner and leave him to his own company. Hopefully he'll pass out and you can have a peaceful evening!

NewGoldFox · 29/08/2025 18:53

I would let it lie for now and pull a similar “prank” in return at a later date.

CeciliaDuckiePond · 29/08/2025 18:51

Disgusting 'prank'.

PInkyStarfish · 29/08/2025 18:51

Probably funny if you were an 11 year old growing up in the 1970s and were using a public telephone box to make prank calls to strangers but not remotely funny as an adult.

That’s just plain nasty.

Lifealwaysgetsbetter · 29/08/2025 18:49

If he’d said sorry my mate is a prick, I would have thought more of my partner but to say those things to me means he is too. Yes it’s not life ending but totally unnecessary. He will no doubt double down tomorrow. None of his mates who know me would do this and I’d at least recognise their voice and when they heard me panic, they would not have continued the prank!

Definitely not funny

HoskinsChoice · 29/08/2025 18:36

It's a bit dickish but hardly world ending. I'd be considerably more angry at the HRT comment.

ginasevern · 29/08/2025 18:34

He'd genuinely be in the fucking hospital if he did that to me. No OP it's not in the slightest bit funny. You would hope at the age of 64 that he wouldn't behave like a 12 year old. But I'm 68 now and my opinion of men has grown less and less over the years to the point of hitting rock bottom. The comment about HRT would put the tin hat on it and to be honest I couldn't go on living with him - let alone wanting his ageing, misogynistic dick anywhere near me.

pizzaHeart · 29/08/2025 18:33

It’s very stupid of them and not remotely funny. I’m sure all normal (not drunk) people will agree with you.
However nothing you can do about it apart from thinking if this stupidity is a pattern with your partner or one off.

ConstantlyChangingamyname · 29/08/2025 18:28

God no. Definetly not funny. Hearing that would make my heart go cold
