This isn’t a funny prank is it?

I’m (f54) really annoyed with my partner (64m). I just called him as he was meant to be back after a couple of hours for a lunchtime drink in town with a bloke from work and that persons friends who I don’t know. Not bothered about him being out later as was just calling to see if he wanted dinner… but someone (who I don’t know) answered the phone and said he’s been taken to hospital. I said “what? Seriously? What’s happened” and he said yeah he’s in hospital. I said you best not be being a dick and he just burst out laughing and passed the phone to my partner who called me back and was annoyed and thinks I’m overreacting. I never call him when he’s out or set any restrictions as he’s an adult but I wanted to check if he wanted dinner making… and as he’s 3 hours late home it gave me a real fright to hear that as I’ve only met the bloke once in passing and I didn’t recognise the voice. My partner is drunk and telling me it was funny and to lighten up.. and have I put my hrt on.. which has made me really annoyed,

aibu - Jokes are meant to be funny surely? I also get to decide what makes me laugh and for all he knew I could be calling to tell him a family member was unwell as I never call when he’s out and he knows this.

He’s replied and said grow up and stop being a drama queen

I'd just go somewhere else for the night (or longer) can you do that? Don;t bother telling him where you are and when or if you will be back. Give yourself some space away from him to decide whether you want to be with this absolute arsehole. He's disgusting and doesn't actually give a shit about upsetting you.

Jesus, what a prick. I'm so sorry op, his attitude is appalling. What would it cost him just to say 'oops, sorry love'?

If I were you I wouldn't do a single thing for him from now on. If he has such a low regard for you, why should you cook his dinner, do his laundry, buy his stuff in the shopping? Just stop, let him crack on.

I do feel really shaken. It took me back to calls about my Dad, my mum and my son being in hospital. It was cruel and I’m grateful for everyone taking the time to reassure me I wasn’t being over sensitive. Hes been very critical of me lately and this just puts the lid on it. But I’m not getting into an argument with him. It’s noted and I’m not going to beg him to see things my way. If he thinks my pain is funny then that’s all I need to know.

I’m so sorry. It takes you right back to that feeling.

And with the HRT comment, and no apology… I’d be done but not everyone would. It’s all up to you.

TomeTome · 29/08/2025 20:46

I’d be tempted to just not come home one night.

I think they can be funny if they’re about someone dying or being injured. Jeremy Beadle’s alien prank was superb!

I assume this is sarcasm re finding jokes about people being injured or dying funny? Or are you a man, with that username?

Lifealwaysgetsbetter · 29/08/2025 20:33

He’s replied and said grow up and stop being a drama queen

😪 So he doesn’t care how much his friend hurt you, or care about your emotions or history with similar bad phone calls 😪

He messaged and asked if I wanted to meet him for a drink and I replied no I’m eating. He said fine. So I sent this.

I do not want an argument with you. You all think being cruel and worrying me is funny and everyone I’ve told thinks it was cruel. I never call you and to hear a strange voice saying you’ve been taken to hospital was awful. I believed him. And when I said really he said yes he’s at the hospital now. The man is an utter prick. There’s nothing funny about that. Nothing whatsoever. I’ve had calls like that about loved ones and my blood ran cold as I didn’t know who had answered. To think it could be funny is beyond comprehension.

I know he won’t apologise. He will double down saying it was a laugh.

I loathed Jeremy Beadle. But then I loathe all pranks. I love jokes and wit, but anything more physical leaves me cold. But I am prepared to admit that this might just be me and the way my sense of humour operates! Different people work differently.

Twistedfirestarters · 29/08/2025 19:32

Ew. This would give me the ick. It's stupid and completely unfunny. Surely the advantage to being with someone 10 years older than you (and in their bloody 60s!!) is that they are mature. What's the point of putting up with the downsides of being with a guy that age if he's going to act like a childish little prick?

PInkyStarfish · 29/08/2025 19:31

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 29/08/2025 19:05

I am of the opinion that there is no good 'prank'. They are all unkind and designed to upset at least one person. The 'isn't it funny' bit is supposed to come from the relief of tension when the prank is revealed. Except that it's more likely to make most people angry than amused.

Velmy · 29/08/2025 19:29

His mate's a div. It's not a funny prank for one, especially on the person's partner and especially if you don't know him.

I'd write hubby's comments off as being pissed and trying to get a chuckle out of the lads, but he'd be apologizing.

PotatoPrometheus · 29/08/2025 19:29

The HRT comment would’ve pushed me over the edge…I’d put the chain on the front door and see how funny he finds a night on the lawn

AardvarkaKedavra · 29/08/2025 19:28

The mate is an idiot and your partner wants to look cool in front of his friend (or is also an idiot, or both).

The HRT comment is charming, too. I'd step back from showing any care or concern for him, as he clearly doesn't deserve it.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 29/08/2025 19:28

I’d be putting his dinner in the bin, or in the dog, if you have one.

Muffsies · 29/08/2025 19:27

'Forget' to do all his laundry, tell him it's a prank and he should lighten up.

MadKittenWoman · 29/08/2025 19:27

Diick.

Athreedoorwardrobe · 29/08/2025 19:26

I'm a petty terrible person but I'd drop it for now. Then in a few weeks when he's forgotten about it txt him saying you are sorry to have to tell him but his mum has died or something horrific. Then when he calls just answer and laugh. Then if he's upset just tell him to lighten up.
Hopefully he will learn the lesson by going thru it.

Account734 · 29/08/2025 19:24

I would be absolutely furious and that fury would last a long time. Your partner is a dickhead. I'd tell him to move in with his friend for a couple months and stay the hell away from me.

Moveoverdarlin · 29/08/2025 19:22

Absolute dick. I’d be plotting my revenge and I’d get him back. I’d also let his mate know what I think about him. They’re in their sixties FFS.

Thepeopleversuswork · 29/08/2025 19:19

The HRT comment would have done it for me. Interesting that you say hes an “adult”: he sounds about 13. What a dick.

IOSTT · 29/08/2025 19:16

Not funny. Tell him can make his own meals from now on so you no longer have to “worry” about him.

Sera1989 · 29/08/2025 19:14

No not funny. I don’t think he should be judged on the prank of his friend unless it was his idea, but I do think he should be judged on his reaction - telling you to lighten up and asking about your HRT! I would not be remotely impressed. Hopefully he will be apologetic when he’s sobered up but I’d find the misogynistic comment really unpleasant

MissyB1 · 29/08/2025 19:14

I couldn’t be with someone like that. I just couldn’t.
