On holiday and they’ve taken the key and won’t answer their phone

On holiday with a family member. We don’t always see eye to eye, but I thought this trip might be a chance for a bit of a reset.

Today we decided to do different things.

Normally I’ve had the apartment key when we’ve gone out together, but I asked them to pop it in the key safe this time. For whatever reason, they didn’t — and with their phone switched off I can’t get hold of them.

I’m making the best of it with a quiet day to myself, but I can’t help feeling a bit upset. It’s left me feeling quite stuck, literally and figuratively. I can’t leave the apartment! I’d never want to make someone else feel like that.

Any advice on how to handle the rest of the trip without letting this sour everything?

Possibly more to do with the fact that she’s been outed and her dsis is posting on this thread with a different story.

Edited

Seems unlikely given that sister's story certainly doesn't put sister in a good light.

Yes, I know. People are still posting though but then I never understood why someone wouldn’t read the full thread. Shrugs.

OP hasn’t posted since noon yesterday, I imagine there’s no longer a problem. Maybe they’ve killed each other.

I would ask the owner for a second key; it’s annoying to have to coordinate.
I wouldn’t tell them about the second key and would do the same to them tomorrow. Just tell them it’s safer. It must be fine to do it, as they’ve done it to you.

But the owner will not provide a second key : they'll just say "use the key safe, that's what it's for!"

GET ANOTHER KEY! The end.

Jesus wept.

GrandmasCat · 30/08/2025 08:13

Plan a full day out, if you want to be really mean (and have the money) book a nice hotel for the night and turn your phone off and let them worry away.

I would contact the owner and ask for another key, explain what’s happened and to stop it happening again, a spare key would be best to avoid any situation arising.

This is a good suggestion. Owners would normally (and should absolutely!) have a procedure in place in case a key gets mislaid. I would say to the owner that your companion has mislaid the key and ask how to get hold of a new key while you 'look for' the old one...

Are you okay? Do you feel safe with your sister? (who BTW, you went to lengths to avoid identifying)

You are the sis @Thefastandthecurious5?

Surely if you knew op/sis (if this is even true) was staying in all day the. You don’t need to take the key

never heard of not using the key safe

Glitchymn1 · 30/08/2025 07:22

I’d make contact with whoever I booked it through and get another key.
Didn’t you have a conversation before they left?

I’d go nuclear…. get ready, wedge the door and leave. Never go away with this twat again.

MyDeftDuck · 30/08/2025 07:18

You are simply a travel companion for this person, someone to pay half towards accommodation etc. They have no consideration for you in terms of being able to access the apartment as and when you want to other than when they’re there to facilitate this. They are making you a prisoner in your own existence.

Don’t you see how they are using you? Pack your stuff and find another hotel and don’t go away with this manipulative, controlling individual again!

I'm the key. I'd like to go home now. ☹️

Did they have a tug of war with you last night?
Someone needs to take you to timpsons.

user1492757084 · 30/08/2025 06:25

Regardless of who has the key the other one should communicate via phone to the accommodation owner and request that they let you into your rooms, every time, if they will not recommend using the key safe.

But the keys should have been left with the person who was most likely to have been nearest the apartment for the day.

user1492757084 · 30/08/2025 06:07

Go out and do what you want for the day.

Ask the accommodation for another key.

It's bonkers that there is only one key.
Every day do exactly what you want but be polite to holiday friend.
Be responsible for your own enjoyment of the trip.

Nanof8 · 30/08/2025 03:44

I don't understand why you wouldn't have 2 keys. If they told me there was only 1 key available, I would take the key down to the local locksmith and have another made then turn that in with the original key when we leave. Luckily all the places I stay use key cards or digital locks so I don't have to worry about it.
If I was leaving for the whole day I would leave the key with the person staying in. If they happened to be out when I got back, I'd just call them.

@ScurryfungeSpuddle no but I am unable to leave and then come back in. It’s self locking.

This is utterly batshit hilarious. Well done 😆

"On holiday with a family member. We don’t always see eye to eye, but I thought this trip might be a chance for a bit of a reset."

"There is a key safe that they have refused to use so it’s not an accident. It’s very much their way or the highway. the door is self locking so I would have to wedge something in between it to be able to leave. They are on a day trip and have refused to come back early to let me out! I told them about the key safe repeatedly and they won’t use it."

"They’ve said it was “safer” for them to take the keys so they would have the option to return to the apartment. Whereas as I obviously don’t have that option…"

There's a reason you "don’t always see eye to eye" - they're abusive. They know exactly what they have done, and they have done it deliberately.

Do not give this family member the tools to abuse you. Never let thm be in possession of the key again. Never. Lock it into the keysafe under a code they don't know (the code can be changed). Wear it round your neck if you have to.

And if possible, I would just exit this holiday altogether. Holidays are meant to be restful and fun, you are going to be on edge waiting for the next shitty behaviour from them - that's not a holiday. I wonder if putting you on edge was their aim, to make it clear to you that they are more important (in their eyes anyway) than you.

Toseland · 30/08/2025 00:57

AugustSlippedAwayIntoAMomentInTime · 29/08/2025 13:52

Poor.

If you genuinely thought she'd be in the apartment all day, you wouldn't have needed the key yourself. She'd have been there to let you in.

Utter dick move on your part.

Exactly! And who wants to stay indoors all day whilst on holiday!?

WWomble · 30/08/2025 00:01

I would have used the time they were out to pack, let the door lock behind you and find a hotel to stay in.

Their behaviour is totally unacceptable and massively selfish. I really wouldn’t be spending any more time with them until I’d had a heartfelt apology.
