On holiday and they’ve taken the key and won’t answer their phone

On holiday with a family member. We don’t always see eye to eye, but I thought this trip might be a chance for a bit of a reset.

Today we decided to do different things.

Normally I’ve had the apartment key when we’ve gone out together, but I asked them to pop it in the key safe this time. For whatever reason, they didn’t — and with their phone switched off I can’t get hold of them.

I’m making the best of it with a quiet day to myself, but I can’t help feeling a bit upset. It’s left me feeling quite stuck, literally and figuratively. I can’t leave the apartment! I’d never want to make someone else feel like that.

Any advice on how to handle the rest of the trip without letting this sour everything?

Because it’s obviously the easiest way! Grow up the pair of you.

Well Im going to join in

Im the holiday let owner and Im not going to give this pair a spare key, they're lunatics.

Im waiting for the cleaner to join this thread as Ive been messaging them all morning and they havent replied.

legsekeven · 29/08/2025 13:53

Can we have a link to the luggage tag thread

Poor.

If you genuinely thought she'd be in the apartment all day, you wouldn't have needed the key yourself. She'd have been there to let you in.

Utter dick move on your part.

Truetoself · 29/08/2025 13:51

Your family member has ridiculous logic! How were you supposed to go out and come back?

What a selfish thing to do. The key safe is perfectly safe to use. Why would you want to ruin your relationship with your sister?

Eddielizzard · 29/08/2025 13:51

I would leave if I could. Someone who is quite happy to do that to you isn't someone I'd want in my life. Take care.

Grammarnut · 29/08/2025 13:51

Why can't you go out and have a pleasant day. Take money and passport and shut the door. Your relative's problem if you are burgled, not yours.

I thought she wohkd probably spend all day in the apartment

how rude and unpleasant

never occurred to you to ASK and make plans with her, instead of letting her stranded there?

wuminty · 29/08/2025 13:50

Sis (the one who went out and took the key), why would you not trust your sister to leave key for you in the safe box if she was going out?

You sound like a nightmare.

Why are the pair of you communicating by posting threads on Mumsnet about each other?

Because it’s obviously the easiest way! Grow up the pair of you.

I didn’t see the luggage tag post - what is the crux of what happened?

is this tit for tat?

You say the apartment owner doesn’t want you using the key safe - but why would they have one if you aren’t to use it, and how do they expect people to manage if people staying are going out doing different things but only 1 key?

Why are you ignoring your sisters calls but happy to come onto Mumsnet to find her post and reply to her thread?

They’ve said it was “safer” for them to take the keys so they would have the option to return to the apartment. Whereas as I obviously don’t have that option…

If you can afford it, move out and find another hotel or come home

If you really cannot afford it, make it the very last time EVER you go anywhere with them

KateBushAgain · 29/08/2025 13:48

The solution is straightforward surely ?
Pack all your stuff and leave , either go to another hotel or home or anywhere but don’t go back there.
You're giving this person all the power , take it back !

@ScurryfungeSpuddle no but I am unable to leave and then come back in. It’s self locking.

punch to the throat when they get back?
prob not

Say firmly: if you don't put the key in the safe, i will go out and leave the door wide open.

And never go anywhere with them again where you have to rely on them not to be a knob. Tell them this.

Starlight7080 · 29/08/2025 13:43

Thats very controlling. Can you get another key? Or go out when you know they will be back within a hour or so and atleast get some fresh air.
Is it your partner?

There is a key safe that they have refused to use so it’s not an accident. It’s very much their way or the highway.

the door is self locking so I would have to wedge something in between it to be able to leave. They are on a day trip and have refused to come back early to let me out! I told them about the key safe repeatedly and they won’t use it.

If its self locking then no problem.

Just grab your stuff and go out for the day.

Absolutely no need to stay in.

Take documentation that you've rented it and ID then if friend isnt back later the staff could let you in.

I would just leave and go and stay elsewhere but not tell them.

So would I, but now I’m in my 50’s I put up with a lot less nonsense than I used to (the only benefit of ageing as far as I can see!).

stayathomer · 29/08/2025 13:36

Are you on holiday holiday as in abroad, or a few hours away? I’d honestly consider going home, no arguments, just a ‘I’m very wrecked, this wasn’t the holiday I thought it would be’ or something similar

EasySqueezy · 29/08/2025 13:36

Seriously I would pack my bags, leave the apartment and go home. Let them return to an empty place and wonder where you are. Then don’t answer your phone.

How did they refuse if not answered the phone?

TokyoSushi · 29/08/2025 13:34

Is this you with the sister and the luggage tag at the airport the other day?

ginasevern · 29/08/2025 13:34

I'm thinking mother too. OP, this is very unkind and possibly even unsafe. I'd pack my bags and leave if I was you. They've literally held you hostage which is unforgiveable. Grab your stuff, passport etc and go. Leave them a note explaining that you were extremely upset and unsettled by their behaviour.
