To tell my husband to stop saying this?

cittykat · 29/08/2025 07:48

my 9 year old son is a massive cat lover. He has cat slippers, tshirts, pens etc etc. I got him some cat pyjamas. These ones. https://amzn.to/45XnCwa

my husband (son’s dad) keeps telling him that he has to stop wearing them as they are girls’ pyjamas.

my son has said to him “please can you stop calling them girls’ pyjamas” and my husband says that he will be bullied if his friends see him wearing them. I have pointed out that the only one bullying him is his own father.

my husband says that telling him that they’re girls’ and not appropriate is not bullying it’s “parenting”

my husband thinks the shorts on the pyjamas are too short. Like little hot pants. Sometimes when son is lounging on the sofa they ride up and some bum cheek is visible. This angers husband and starts him off on his “girls’ pyjamas” conversation again.

son likes the pyjamas. I said I would ask on here what people thought. Please vote.

YANBU - your husband should stop calling them “girls’ pyjamas” to your son and back off

YABU - your son shouldn’t wear the pyjamas and your husband is right to protect him from future bullying if son’s friends saw the pyjamas on a sleepover.

To me this is two things

To let him wear those PJs as they are, YABU. They sound awful and I am not surprised your husband is uncomfortable.

To object to your husband treating your son like this, bullying him and potentially even making him feel bad for who is he now and who he may grow up to be, YANBU.

Can he wear the cat top with joggers?

Can you go online to one of the many companies that do bespoke t-shirts for quite cheap and get him a load of cat themed things?

I am surprised that your husband hasn't just waited until he has left for school, chucked the shorts in the bin (at work, so so would never be able to find them) and then claimed ignorance. That's what I would have done. And yes, I am very scheming.

Did your son ask for this specific pair or did you choose to buy them?

Then they aren’t appropriate. If they don’t cover him then they aren’t appropriate and would not be appropriate for a girl either.

Only when he sits in certain positions! When women sit or stand in certain positions wearing short skirts and dresses you can see arse, should short dresses and short skirts all be banned?

Your son is 9, not 5 so I can see where your husband is coming from here.

Why?

The question isn't really are the labelled as girls or not. We can see they are (although I don't know why they are)

Husband knows they are. That's what has started this whole thing.

The question is should son be allowed to continue wearing them, and should DH stop bullying son over it now son has asked husband to stop mentioning it.

They fit him absolutely fine. They are a size bigger than he normally wears.

They fit him absolutely fine. They are a size bigger than he normally wears.

They clearly do not fit him absolutely fine if they're showing his bum. It's a weird hill to die on but you do.

Noshadelamp · 29/08/2025 08:43

and should DH stop bullying son over it now son has asked husband to stop mentioning it. @cittykat

A father should never bully his own child or any child for that matter, regardless of the issue, regardless of who's asked him to stop.

But even more so as it's obviously distressing your son, so of course he should stop bullying (abusing) his child.

millymollymoomoo · 29/08/2025 08:43

Now is the time to teach your son about resilience and to stick up for himself

dad might be an idiot but son needs to just say, well I like them so it doesn’t matter what you think dad.

Mischance · 29/08/2025 08:42

I wonder how your OH would have coped with my lovely GS who used to lounge about in his sister's sparkly fairy outfit! - and plastic high heeled mules!

He is now a stereotypical adult male.

He should only be wearing pyjamas just before bed anyway

Says who? Why do people think their opinion is fact?

Anonymous23456 · 29/08/2025 08:41

They are PJs that your son is wearing in the house. I don't see an issue. He should be able to wear what he wants in his home without the worry of criticism.

However, clothes are cut differently for boys and girls. Girls shorts are shorter. I actually buy my girls' clothes from the boys' section because of this.

You can get some lovely cat stuff from the RSPCA and the Cats Protection League. They cost more than supermarkets but at least the money goes to charity.

No, they don't fit him, the shorts clearly don't.
This is all very odd. He should only be wearing pyjamas just before bed anyway.

Noshadelamp · 29/08/2025 08:40

Husband dislikes the pyjamas because the shorts are very short and to him the style should only be worn by girls
@cittykat
Surely if they're too short for a boy to wear they'd be too short for a girl to wear? I don't understand your husband's "logic" there.

Clothes being gendered is a social construct rooted in misogyny.

Why is your husband so bothered anyway, is he worried your son might be gay? That's a red flag right there.

T92 · 29/08/2025 08:39

They are girls pyjamas, it says so on the link. Yes, the shorts are feminine and designed for a girls body.

I'd probably let my son wear the top and by him some more appropriate shorts. They're riding up his leg so you can see his bum? Yeah, I'd just get him some different shorts.

Surely they sell cat pyjamas for boys?

Icanttakethisanymore · 29/08/2025 08:39

ittakes2 · 29/08/2025 08:01

This is a joke post right? The link you posted literally says they are girls pjs so likely designed for girls bodies.

No one is contesting that they are girls pyjamas. We are incredulous that this boys dad cares one way or the other. A company has decided to market their pyjamas for girls, thats it. They are just pyjamas.

Marylou2 · 29/08/2025 08:39

Ah that well known symbol of girlie's, the cat! Your husband's an arsehole.Get some PJS that fit your son and stitch some cat motifs on them.

They don't fit him fine if his bum is exposed.

PestoHoliday · 29/08/2025 08:39

Is your husband insecure in his masculinity? A bit of a homophobe? Fairly unreconstructed?

They are pjs. They are typically marketed to girls, but at that age they aren't going to be cut with a narrow waist, wide hips or contain a bralette, so in reality they are unisex.

The only reason for your husband to be uncomfortable is because he feels worried by the idea of your son being feminine or associated with something 'girly'. That an prejudice for him to address. He needs to stop being a wanker to your son about it.

Apocketfilledwithposies · 29/08/2025 08:38

One of my sons loves cats.

He's had a cat themed birthday party in the past. He's had cat t-shirts from the girls section and cat pyjamas.

None of his school friends bat an eyelid.

His dad embraces it wholeheartedly.

My son also likes nail varnish on his toes sometimes and his dad will just say "cool colours!".

Because he's not a misogynistic bully.

The misogyny in the gendering of kids clothing is quite an eye opener. Boys get "tough" animals like lions, dinos, wolves/dogs, etc. Girls get cutesy animals like cats and bunnies and butterflies. 🙄😡 Girls clothing is also more closely fitting and shows more skin eg shorter shorts, more open collars, shorter cap sleeves on tees etc. I shop in both girls and boys sections for my kids depending what they like or need.

I like scandi clothing as it's more gender neutral. Brands like maxomorra or duns have made some cat prints.

OP your husband is a bully who needs to think why he's so bothered by this. His hatred is showing and he's directing it as his own child! 😢

Lurker85 · 29/08/2025 08:38

If hes only wearing them at home and to bed then who cares if there’s a bit of cheek or the shorts are a bit small. It’s about him being comfortable in his own home. Unless your husband has him involved in some sort of school pyjama fashion show where he could have an inbetweeners style incident, who cares!

cittykat · 29/08/2025 08:38

Butchyrestingface · 29/08/2025 08:32

Better not show your husband that link then, OP, since it will only confirm his idea that they are girls' pyjamas.

I agree he needs a size bigger if his bum is hanging out. The most concerning thing is that your husband appears to think its okay for girls to expose their bum cheeks but not boys.

Do you have any daughters?

Thank you. He has size 11-12 and normally wears a size 9-10 so I already sized up. They’re not too small for him it’s just the style of them is quite a ‘short’ short

BUMCHEESE · 29/08/2025 08:37

It sounds like the pjs aren't appropriate because of the way they fit. Those other ones linked won't risk your ds flashing accidentally!

Swiftie1878 · 29/08/2025 08:37

SomeOfTheTrouble · 29/08/2025 08:25

Biologically not true. Girls tend to be slightly bigger and heavier at that age due to an earlier onset of puberty. If anything, girls pyjamas should be cut larger in the bum and hips.

You’re right that girls are shaped differently too, but in terms of the length of the shorts, boys are generally taller by that age.

Digdongdoo · 29/08/2025 08:37

Your DH sounds like a dick. But children shouldn't have their bums hanging out of their pjs. If the shorts are too short he needs bigger ones, without cat print if need be. Just get him a plain pair of shorts that actually fit him.

YelloDaisy · 29/08/2025 08:36

I have SILs they don’t want their sons in ‘girls’ clothes however politically incorrect that is
