Kids fighting and shouting in the garden until 9pm

Would you be happy if your neighbour’s children were fighting, shouting and screaming whilst playing football in the garden until 9pm?
The three children are aged 7-16 and the older ones tend to bully the youngest which causes him to shout and argue with them. The parents never intervene or ask them to keep it down.

It’s waking up our 3 year old and 7 month old, even over white noise, as their rooms overlook the garden and we’re in a Victorian terrace, so we’re getting frustrated with it. The sound is so loud that I can hear it through the monitor clearly.

We genuinely don’t mind playing, laughing, talking, we get that kids are loud, but the constant shouting, bickering and screaming as balls constantly bash against the wall is starting to drive us a bit insane.

How much do people tolerate before asking the parents to intervene?

An aquaintance of mine is a landlord. A neighbour came whinging about his tenants that the children were noisy in the garden and they cut the lawn on a saturday morning. The LLs response was that they are doing nothing to break their lease as these are normal domestic noises taking place at acceptable social hours. He said that he was not going to nag his tenants and sour their relationship because he could be accused of harassing them. Therefore they (the NDN) would have to find their own way of dealing with the situation.

PurpleThistle7 · 29/08/2025 12:42

I think it’s obnoxious but also perfectly legal. I can’t see what you’d achieve by talking to the parents except creating a bad situation but you’re the only one who knows the family.

Sadly, this isn’t just a summer thing, it’s pretty much all year round.

Yes, we can keep our windows open but during that 32c heatwave, we need them open.

It seems like there’s very much a divide on this and what’s acceptable.

We get that kids will be kids but these are teens and preteens, aside from the younger two siblings, shouting, fighting and screaming.
A baby genuinely cannot help but cry, so feel like you can’t really compare to purposely shouting when it’s possible not to.

Edited

Ultimately it isn’t illegal for them to be making this sort of racket at 9pm. At 11,12,1am you’d be able to make a complaint but not at 9pm.

Morally it is inconsiderate and most parents would obviously intervene. There are some neighbours that just do not care about the noise they make. Our neighbour regularly decides to start loud DIY at 9,10pm despite being home during the day.

It is up to you if you want to speak to the parents and just see if they can have a word with the kids. I agree with other posters as well you’ll probably find your kids just as loud one day though x

That's what kids do though. They're noisy OP will soon find thos our for herself.

Correction that’s what some kids do - because their parents let them.

Onelifeonly · 29/08/2025 09:25

As a parent I'd be embarrassed to be disturbing others and make sure my kids were quieter / indoors. But it seems unlikely the parents of these kids will care much if you say anything. Or nay have no control. They may be outside as they also shout in the house.

9.00 isn't too bad though I understand your children need to go to sleep earlier. Could you swap bedrooms around so they're on the other side of the house?

converseandjeans · 28/08/2025 21:20

@RoseAlone mine are older teens now but have never screamed and shouted out in the garden. If they did I would tell them to pack it in as it’s annoying!

Fountofwisdom · 29/08/2025 08:44

Terraced housing inevitably means more noise transference than, say, a semi-detached, and is not dissimilar to living in a flat. You’re in very close proximity to your neighbours and sharing walls on all sides.

As your children get older, they will be making more noise too. I can understand the shouting and screaming is annoying, but surely the late evening football will decrease once they are back at school and the evenings get shorter and darker.

Undoundid · 29/08/2025 08:11

You have a toddler and a 7 month old in a terraced house. I find it difficult to believe that your kids never disturb them crying or waking in the night.

I'd let this one slide OP. It all part and parcel of living in close quarters and I'd put money on them putting up with as much from you as you are from them.

pilates · 29/08/2025 07:42

No one minds kids playing but screaming is annoying. No need for it.

ComeTheMoment · 29/08/2025 07:29

UANBU but it’s the end of the summer and in your shoes I’d try to avoid a confrontation with the neighbours over this one.

Meadowfinch · 29/08/2025 04:25

RoseAlone · 28/08/2025 20:32

They're in their own property and 9pm isn't late. Yours will be doing the same soon enough

This. It's the last week of the summer holidays. I'd let them get on with it, soon it will be too dark, chilly, wet and they'll have home work.

cheesycheesy · 29/08/2025 04:06

It’s irritating but there’s nothing you can do. Some people are just obnoxious arseholes. Our neighbours are noisy in summer but you do have to try and get your children used to the noise. Both of my ds’ can sleep through an atomic bomb now as we live in a mid terrace close to a hospital and main road.

Confusdworriedmum · 29/08/2025 03:39

Screaming is a no from me. My children learned very early on that if you scream you don't play outside
Shouting and laughing is something you do have to learn to live with if you have neighbours as I'm sure soon it'll be your children outside shouting and laughing.
I do think once people are past the baby stage they forget how hard it is and aren't always considerate to other parents.
What can you do? Sadly not much. You can talk to the parents but if they're happy to let their eldest bully their youngest I'm not sure they'll do anything.
Can you move bedrooms?

beAsensible1 · 29/08/2025 03:26

No. CLose your windows. The o session with quiet is unnecessary.

im sure the baby can be heard crying at all times and you will want the good will when your own get to that age.

AardvarkaKedavra · 29/08/2025 03:05

Continued screaming is inconsiderate at any time of day, so you aren't unreasonable to be annoyed and you WNBU to request that their parents try to reduce the noise they make, but I don't honestly know if I'd bother. I tend to believe that anyone who would allow the screaming in the first place won't react well to even polite requests that they rein in their noisy kids, so I'd be looking instead at anything else I could do myself. Perhaps you're braver than I am (or have more faith in the humanity of your neighbours).

somethingnewandexciting · 29/08/2025 02:55

I don't even let my dog bark for over a minute in the garden during the day time! I let her out for a wee and she can stay out if she is quiet but a few too many barks and she is lured back in with a biscuit so the neighbours can enjoy their garden.

I often feel I live in a different world where everyone just does whatever they like thoughtlessly.

NameChangeAsICouldBeOverReacting · 28/08/2025 20:33

I understand 10pm is the cut off and when you can raise noise complaints in our area, but isn’t it inconsiderate to be shouting in the garden until 9pm?

I honestly have no idea on what’s reasonable, unreasonable or us being sleep deprived, so feeling more annoyed with it.

No, it isn't because like you said cut off is 10 pm and they can do whatever the hell they want in their home.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 29/08/2025 02:51

Would you be happy if your neighbour’s children were fighting, shouting and screaming whilst playing football in the garden until 9pm?

Yes, because during the school holiday it goes on here to 11pm. 😡

We even tell our 3 year old not to scream
and shout, so I agree, we wouldn’t allow it as teens either.

It’s selfish and antisocial. And I say that as the mum of a footie mad teen. We’ve never allowed screaming or shouting, and the ball is not allowed to be kicked against the fence, he has a net. And it’s dark at 9pm now. Can you go around and have politely talk to them? Would they listen?

Corfumanchu · 28/08/2025 21:07

Andv6 am would be too early. Yhe houtd of reduced noise are 11pm to 7 am. Most people are up and aboit ay 9pm.Also most babies can sleep through noise. Do they mpt nap in the daytime at all?

NameChangeAsICouldBeOverReacting · 28/08/2025 20:47

PamIsAVolleyballChamp · 28/08/2025 20:35

Are they shouting aggressively or just being noisy and annoying?

Shouting aggressively as they argue whilst playing football, which results in the older ones kicking balls at the youngest, he then screams. Rinse, repeat for 2-3 hours straight.

@Corfumanchu we’re not expecting the world to revolve around our children, it’s actually waking the baby more than the toddler, but asking if it’s inconsiderate.
We don’t go out at 6am and scream and shout in the garden when they are sleeping as I know that’s inconsiderate.

Annoying but 9pm isn't late.

Once school starts and the evenings get darker they will probably be in before 9.

Sadly, they don’t. It’s all year round, even with the youngest one out, who tends to scream more as his brothers kick footballs at him.
