Taylor Swift engagement - puzzled

I’m in my 30s and so unreasonable to be posting/caring about this on every level. BUT. I didn’t see a post. So…

AIBU to be puzzled that the man Taylor Swift has finally decided to settle down with is so different to the type she has seemed to date pretty consistently through her 20s and 30s up to then? She seemed so keen on soft, arty, mainly British boys - and now she’s gone for the direct opposite. Is it because her previous long relationship with a soft, arty British boy (Joe Alwyn) didn’t go the distance and so she decided she really needed to change her type if she wanted marriage and kids? Is it a fairly cynical marketing reaction to the current political situation in the States (no idea if TK is actually a Republican but he looks like someone who could appeal to Republicans, very much unlike Joe Alwyn)? Is it just a return to her American, country roots? What gives? I’m her age and I just can’t imagine my tastes changing as dramatically as that.

We used to like the same type of man, and now I feel like I don’t know her any more (I know, I know, I know) 🤣

I'm an artist myself and always went with soft, arty boys for ages and it never went well and I ended up happily married to a manly engineer. My SIL always went for more rugged, handsome guys with beards and who were always suited and booted. Now she getting married to more homely looking man who is a bit of a geek, not her usually type at all but sometimes the man we really click with is not our usual type or who we expect.

Raquelos · 27/08/2025 22:28

I'm always quite bemused by the people who claim not to care (probably true) but are really quite annoyed that anyone else might. They seem to be sufficiently annoyed to click on a thread to tell people about it, it's odd to be so put out by other people enjoying something fairly benign imo.

It's okay for people to like things and people that you don't, and vice versa.

Justgorgeous · 27/08/2025 22:23

I think most of the world’s population hopefully don’t give a shit.

Matronic6 · 27/08/2025 22:20

My DH is completely different from all the men I had relationships with and was attracted to before. Two of my very good friends also ended up with people pretty much opposite of what they were looking for.

I think moving away from a 'type' is actually a sign of maturing and realising the qualities you really want and need in a partner.

They seem very together and I wish them well.

foxlover47 · 27/08/2025 22:18

I’m so glad she’s got Travis because he seems like he really adores her and isn’t that we all want really
plus as a huge swiftie I am just so genuinely happy for her

I am by no means a Taylor Swift fan, tbh she irritates the life out of me, however I think you are analysing this far to much. She’s met someone, she loves them they got engaged thats literally it!

she irritates the life out of me

Not the point of this thread but I agree. Maybe because of her heavily Hollywood style PR driven mediocre music.

I'm more puzzled as to why that made headline news.

In This country because there's no parliament in session yet and there's only so much that can be said about flags.

Gymbunny2025 · 27/08/2025 22:14

I don’t know much about her exes or fiancé (or her really) but I think it’s fairly common to have ‘a type’ then realise that someone who doesn’t fit that type at all is actually the love of your life

Lilactimes · 27/08/2025 22:11

Scentedjasmin · 27/08/2025 21:52

I think that she's an American girl at heart, who found the idea of dating an English gent romantic, but in reality wouldn't want to have moved to the UK, nor him to The States. I think that Kelce is a really physically big man that just makes her feel safe. No one is going to mess with him and he will act as her bodyguard/protector. I think that it's also due to timing - her wanting to settle down and him being at the height of his career (in terms of achievement rather than longevity).

I agree - I also think he seems very able to deal with her fame and success and it must be hard to find a man like that.

Silverbirchleaf · 27/08/2025 22:10

I’m puzzled why it’s such major news.

ShesTheAlbatross · 27/08/2025 22:08

Namechangerage · 27/08/2025 21:43

Wasn’t it pretty much confirmed as a PR stunt with the leaked documents confirming the plan for their break up? Seems suspicious they’re now conveniently engaged….

You can’t use the fact that they got engaged a year after that “leak” as evidence that it was real, because it’s also the behaviour of two people who are not in a fake relationship.

MrsRonaldWeasley · 27/08/2025 22:05

My DH (of 21 years) was very different from everyone I had dated before him. Guess there was a reason why others didn't work out and he did 🤷🏻‍♀️

AelinAG · 27/08/2025 22:05

I think you’re painting her exes with quite broad strokes. Apart from being skinny British boys, Joe and Matty haven’t got that much in common.

Glowstickparty · 27/08/2025 22:03

Maybe she just grew up and found who she needed.

Crushed23 · 27/08/2025 22:02

Stopandlook · 27/08/2025 17:58

Maybe she’s just ready to settle down? I sure dated some wrong uns for a while and then took a chance on my DH who was different -and it was the best decision I ever made

Obsessed with Tay’s music and v much hope it’s the real deal 😍

Love to see this! My current DP is so different from any man I have ever dated / been in a relationship with and I have a good feeling about it. Still early days though!

I don’t follow celebrity stuff, but Taylor Swift is exactly the same age as me and it’s good to see a woman who very publicly played the field through her 20s and early 30s, dating numerous guys, fall in love and get engaged in her mid-30s. 💜

intoFolklore · 27/08/2025 21:59

I've cycled through footballers/rugby players for a few years, then dated a few a musicians, married and divorced a musician, and now my current partner is neither sporty or musical. He's a geeky PC gamer. If I was ever asked if I had a type I would probably say musicians though. Sometimes you can date people who aren't your usual type and it work out without it meaning your type has changed.

Very happy for her though 🥰 this is the kinda love she's sang about wanting her whole career.

LouisaJG · 27/08/2025 21:28

I don’t think bisexuality really has anything to do with types. A close friend of mine is bisexual, her type whether male or female is bookish and preppie. You can see the throughline.

Well my type was exclusively men, indie men. Until I met my wife. Who isn’t indie in the slightest… and isn’t a man.

It doesn’t matter if you think you have a type as many people are sharing, one day you meet someone and types go out the window

Scentedjasmin · 27/08/2025 21:52

Sowingbees · 27/08/2025 18:05

Or maybe the people before weren't her type, but a rebellion, the people she wanted to want.

I am not who I was in my 20's, in my 20s I dated people who I thought gave me the life I didn't have growing up.
But then I grew up, and realised their was no shame in my background and I married someone who was similar to my childhood.

I think it’s this. Their family backgrounds and upbringings are similar. She’s fooled around but ultimately ended up with someone who feels closer to home.

They’re both successful, motivated and driven. The big difference to me is that he is a very masculine man whereas the others were a bit more wafty.

Phatgurslyms · 27/08/2025 21:52

I agree with you Op.

ForZanyAquaViewer · 27/08/2025 21:52

I think having a rigid ‘type’ is fairly silly and a bit unusual. People certainly have characteristics that attract them, but there’s nothing to say that the specific characteristics that attracted her to Joe Alwyn aren’t the same ones that attracted her to Travis Kelce. The men she’s dated might all have a cracking sense of humour and share a love of nineteenth century poetry.

We do not know these people. We have no idea what their personalities are.

BuffaloCauliflower · 27/08/2025 18:54

From what little insight we really have into her relationships and her and Travis, it seems like Travis really shows up for her in a way previous partners didn’t, he’s not afraid of her success or want to hide them away from the world. He seems like an uncomplicated grown up who just thinks she’s great and loves her for her. No angst, no drama.

This! The way she is with Travis and her behaviour since being with him has been so much more confident and unapologetic. Just look at pictures of them together compared to pictures of her with Joe. He makes her feel confident and loved! I think she took a risk after hearing him talk about her on the podcast and it obviously paid off! On his political views my instinct tells me he wasn’t that into politics before her but she’s probably opened his eyes to a lot of the stuff she is passionate about and because he seems an all-round solid guy he is willing to listen and be open rather than come from a place of defence. I think Joe always seemed a bit over woke and pretentious in this area tbh.

PInkyStarfish · 27/08/2025 20:17

Showmance. Obviously.

Why obviously? Why can’t famous people just fall in love and get married without there being a conspiracy theory?

Molto · 27/08/2025 21:48

If it helps, OP, I always went for arty, floaty, long-haired types as a teen. Met my sporty, beer-drinking, outdoorsy now-husband in my 20s and quickly realised that while those others might have been pale and interesting, he was secure, kind, welcoming, open-hearted, supportive, and SO much more fun to be around.

I was no longer being tortured (pun intended) by passions and neurotic feelings and who outdid who in any way, or panicking over how they behaved with my friends and family - with this new type I’d never gone for before and never thought I’d go for, turned out to be exactly what this arty, floaty, introspective type (me) needed.

ZoeCM · 27/08/2025 21:46

Loads of people end up marrying someone who's nothing like their usual "type".
