Taylor Swift engagement - puzzled

I’m in my 30s and so unreasonable to be posting/caring about this on every level. BUT. I didn’t see a post. So…

AIBU to be puzzled that the man Taylor Swift has finally decided to settle down with is so different to the type she has seemed to date pretty consistently through her 20s and 30s up to then? She seemed so keen on soft, arty, mainly British boys - and now she’s gone for the direct opposite. Is it because her previous long relationship with a soft, arty British boy (Joe Alwyn) didn’t go the distance and so she decided she really needed to change her type if she wanted marriage and kids? Is it a fairly cynical marketing reaction to the current political situation in the States (no idea if TK is actually a Republican but he looks like someone who could appeal to Republicans, very much unlike Joe Alwyn)? Is it just a return to her American, country roots? What gives? I’m her age and I just can’t imagine my tastes changing as dramatically as that.

We used to like the same type of man, and now I feel like I don’t know her any more (I know, I know, I know) 🤣

I think Taylor writes some great songs but I certainly wouldn’t describe myself as a swiftie. I’ve been seeing clips of Travis & Jason’s podcast on TikTok and they certainly seem funny but I know the square root of feck-all about American football. Despite that I watched the Taylor episode of New Heights and it’s blindingly obvious just how in love they are and perfect they are together. I wish them all the love in the world.

I remember the leaked memo about a break up coming out because a PR woman I follow on TikTok talked about it. Apparently all celebrity relationships where the couple aren’t married have some version of it, it’s essentially a pre-nup before a pre-nup is needed.

My main take away from it all is that I think I might be in love with Jason, he’s adorable 🥰. An absolute dream brother-in-law and Kylie (I admit, I have dipped into her podcast a couple of times) seems fantastic as well.

I know very little about either of them but get the impression she's met a decent man with own life and career who isn't intimidated by or jealous or her fame and wants the same things out of life.

Seems like a result to me.

Yes I agree. I’m not a Swiftie but I can see how he would suit her so well. He obviously adores her and understands the pressures of fame and performing at the highest level (in sport but similar adulation/criticism levels).

HoldMyBreathOnTheTightrope · 28/08/2025 07:48

The Daily Mash has a headline today 'How to get over your lifelong thing for pale sensitive English boys by marrying a fucking bear' next to a photo of Taylor and Travis, which I think sums it up!

HerNeighbourTotoro · 28/08/2025 07:35

Baffling you find it puzzling, unless you only dated one man and his versions your whole life?

Yes and they also lost one. Your point being?

You say lost one like it’s a terrible thing - it’s pretty damn hard to even make it to the Super Bowl final. You really can’t knock how successful he’s been, much as you might want to.

(and anyway his brother was in that other winning team so the family win tally is pretty good. Grin)

Well they certainly look very happy together. I am pleased for her.she is an amazing musician. Apparently gives money to food banks when she performs in Britain. I think they ate in love

She donated to food banks and/or charities in every city she visited. Enough to fund them for over a year apparently.

She also gave her crew (band, dancers, lorry drivers etc) massive bonuses at the end of the first US leg, and I'm sure she did the same after Europe etc. She personally tips staff everywhere she goes. She's very very rich, but also extremely generous. It's lovely to see.

I see a lot of “it’s fake” type posts on social media but am utterly baffled by what either would stand to gain from such an arrangement. She is beyond wealthy and famous, and he’s not doing too badly himself either.

It's so bizarre. Don't even start me on the gaylors.

XWKD · 28/08/2025 05:56

You don't know if he's her type or not. How well to do you know him?

MayaPinion · 28/08/2025 05:48

TC is left leaning and I think they have very similar values. They’re both family oriented. He’s hugely successful and has nothing to prove to anyone. In that sense, in America at least, he is more ‘her equal’ than anyone else she has dated. And look at him. He’s absolutely beautiful and they make a gorgeous couple.

VegemiteOnToast · 28/08/2025 04:20

I think she was originally impressed by his public declaration of wanting to date her, he wasn't scared of her fame. And then I guess when they met, they had chemistry. Even if he isn't her usual 'type' they have similar close-knit families and similar values (both very loyal but also ambitious in their careers). Plus he seems to absolutely adore her. I think it's a great match.

I suspect Kelce appears to have quite a sensitive arty side so appearances can be deceiving.

He seems a combo of virility & sensitivity…what's not to like!

Bigcat25 · 28/08/2025 03:18

If she's marrying for life and having kid's she needs someone strong pyschologically and very committed to take that on. Obviously she lives with a massive amount of scrutiny and hysteria, and has had stalkers for example. Parenting, and growing up with parents this famous could be very hard. He seems up for that and has a close, strong family too (with young cousins for any kids they may have.) Finding all that isn't easy.

mrsmiawallace3 · 28/08/2025 02:53

Yes, I remember a therapist friend telling me once, that an excellent predictor of long term marital success is when no one can tell whose family members are whose at the wedding!

mrsmiawallace3 · 28/08/2025 02:10

Not' intel cod psychology' at all in fact, but straight from the horses mouth of a medical professor at UCL as it happens.

mrsmiawallace3 · 28/08/2025 02:05

Give it time op 😅My generation all know someone who ; having completed their family, suddenly found them selves welcoming an 'accidental late lamb ' in their late thirties/ early forties... As an English teacher myself, I may well have secretly fancied the Gym teacher, but chose to marry an intellectual peer instead.

So according to MN lore at least, men have the monopoly on being simple minded animals controlled by their penis's, yet we are completely above that kind of thing.

Controlled by their penis's [sic] what?

If she wants children, it's probably better to have them with somebody who actually wants them with her than not. You're also ignoring that for the majority of women in relationships, they will be using contraception, so the incel cod psychology about their ovaries falls down at the first fence, even before you take into account that she may not want children, may not want to give birth or may not be able to conceive.

Firefly1987 · 28/08/2025 01:56

I'm a couple years older than Taylor and my ovaries are not having ANY sort of party yet 😆and that includes having the slightest bit of attraction to certain American football (is that what he does?) players! I do get what OP means, he is a specific "type"-I've never yet gone for burly, bearded men despite liking quite a broad range of guys. I don't even get the rugby thing, but maybe I'm missing out there!

This sounds like pseudoscience.

It certainly reduces women down to simple minded animals controlled by their uteruses, unable to see reason, doesn't it?

mrsmiawallace3 · 28/08/2025 01:29

My late Medical consultant husband would be offended

mrsmiawallace3 · 27/08/2025 23:36

Taylor is 35, an age at which a woman's baby making hormones may start calling the shots ...Gynacologists call the years up to, and including the early forties: "The ovaries last party". Just as, while ovulating, women tend to go for hyper masculine men, the same is true of these years. My worry is that, post baby making, she will begin to miss the intellectual prowess of her previous 'type'.

This sounds like pseudoscience.

JHound · 28/08/2025 01:23

I am not surprised he is different.

None of her previous pattern led to long-term commitment. If your pattern is not working for you - change it.
