I have a few. Can't say them out loud (except to DH).

MIL & FIL - multi millionaires. Spend loads of money on themselves, lavish holidays, sports cars, only the very best restaurants etc. Never ever do they give a penny to their adult children (and one is flat broke). This is despite them both having been given property and a thriving business by a parent themselves.

My Dad - Overbearing, alcoholic, violent outbursts etc, all through our childhood. He's now decrepit and I have to do so much for him. I resent it.

Brother - keeps saying he's broke, whilst living like a rockstar. Just spend £20k on a holiday, lives in a £600k house, drives top of the range car, but often claims poverty - stop lying!

And breathe......

Anyone else?

Chaotic bag packing at the supermarket by DH. I line the bags up and fill them in a thoroughly organised fashion to balance the weight, make sure all the frozen is together and ensure things don't get squashed. DH on the other hand is dangling a bag in mid air hurling the first thing he lays his hands on in the general direction of the bag, which ends up an odd triangular shape. It could have eggs at the bottom and a bag of potatoes at the top, he doesn't care. I sent him away today so I could do it myself

Years ago my grandmother left me a ruby ring in her will, but her daughter (my aunt) took it. I'm not big into jewellery - I'm happy with things from Accessorize etc - so I didn't make a fuss about it at the time, and it wouldn't have changed anything anyway. However, I'm sad that my aunt took something that she knew was for me because it taints her memory. I didn't see her often because we lived so far away from her, but I'd always understood she'd wanted a daughter instead of her sons and believed she loved me.
Years have passed. My aunt is long dead and the ring will have passed to the family of one of her sons. But I'd really like that ring now - not for me, but so I could give it to one of my daughters or granddaughters. I can't say that I'm pissed about it - just sad. But I also can't ask my cousin for it because he might feel bad if he knows what his mother did.

We were promised a large amount of money by a relative but have so far only received 20% of it. I’m pretty sure I know the reason why and I’m ok with it, it’s just because they were so clear on giving it to us, we’d factored it into our plans for when we remortgage.

Ironically, If they’d just let us know definitely that we’re not getting it then we’d be fine with that. However, at the moment, we’re in limbo thinking are we? Aren’t we? But we both feel too awkward and grabby to ask 😂

This made me think of another one -

My MIL gives money for Christmas, but she never says she is going to on the day itself (so then you have handed over all your presents but just kind of sitting there yourself with nothing) and then just transfers it on a random day afterwards.

It always seems to be just as you get to the stage of going "is she sending something this year? so then you feel like a grabby cow for questioning it, but also then the event is over and so it's barely a Christmas present anymore? And we don't get to say thank you in person when we see her on Christmas day, it ends up just by phone a month later.

Really winds me up, why be so weird about it?! Every single year! But of course, a different date every time.... 🙈 Once it was basically the end of Jan!

Oops, now I feel silly 😂

My mum is like this. When i injured my knee she made out that her broken nail was worse. If i ended up in icu she would be more bothered about her hayfever.

It’s their world, we just happen to live in it 😁

@pinknailvarnish1

Do we have the same MIL? 😄

When I told mine I’d been diagnosed with breast cancer, she gave me a long blank stare, then turned to my husband and said “Well obviously, her having cancer is better than having hay fever like me. I’ll never be cured of my problem”

I didn’t expect any sympathy, so I wasn’t surprised!

People who are very loud and don’t let other people get a word in edgewise.

I saw a woman with her bare feet on the seat opposite her on the train yesterday yuck. She kept stretching her feet and legs out, had very dry skin. I was just thinking, take note of the carriage I'm on in case I get the same one back in the morning I wont sit there.

Oh very yuck. Why are people so disgusting!

People who get off an escalator and then stand there trying to figure out what direction to walk in. MOVE! There's a whole escalator of people coming up behind you, FFS.

At the airport - people that stand still on the moving walkways and create a bottle neck behind them. They make me so cross.

I have a friend who I love but find incredibly annoying. She’s an absolute bore and has never learnt the art of reciprocity in conversation.

A group of us ‘girls’ are going out this weekend. There will be a covert attempt from all to neither sit next to her, nor in her eye line. I usually lose this sneaky battle, so I’ll end up missing out on all the good chat whilst she drones on and on at me.

She also drinks too much and starts offering unwanted advice to people, and offending them in the process.

She doesn’t sound like a friend and neither do you, to be frank.

You mean you are worried about something….?

Yes the language of young people is overly dramatic. Sometimes I’ll get a text from my DD21 and it sounds terrible when you read it rather than hear her say it laughing. If you’re not keeping up with the lingo it causes all sorts of misunderstandings.

What attracted me to my husband was I watched him go into the toilet, and I heard the hand dryer going before he left :)

lol. I know what you mean.

My dad had three things that he was particularly peeved about:

  1. people who treat waitstaff, baristas, receptionists like petty personal slaves ... barking orders/demands at them.

  2. people aged 8-98 with poor table manners ... chewing mouth open, elbows on the table, fingers in mouth at the table, poor dexterity/control with utensils & cutlery ... biggest frustration with parents in public setting a poor example to their children.

  3. men and youths wearing hats and caps indoors ... with particular venom to anyone who eats a meal at a table or bench without removing headwear.

I inherited all these from him by my teens but added a new one of my own ...

  1. men who go to the urinals in pubs, restaurants and public places who finish peeing but bypass the sink, soap, water & hand-dryers/towels before returning to dinner or bar. [I imagine that they think their willies are always completely sanitised at all times.] In my post 45yo years, I have taken to shaming them ... long before COVID-10 drew its first breath.

My cousin’s daughter is one of those who does Instagram things. My grandmother died 18 months ago and she wanted just a flower display on the coffin and a simple funeral.

Cousin’s daughter ignored my grandmother’s (her great grandmother) requests. She got those ‘NAN’ flowers (My DGM hated those) and two flower cushions. Plus gave all the attendees a rose to put onto the coffin on leaving.

Plus other things which really got on my DF’s nerves

The worst one of this I ever saw was Leed’s

You do have to wonder WTF they were ever taught at school.

Parents that go overboard with their DC’s first birthday. They will not have any memories of this

Seeing incorrect plurals everywhere, inc. on MN - family’s, baby’s, party’s, box’s, bus’s, Christmas’s.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/08/2025 07:47

Disrespect/disrespectful - so overused now, inc. on here, when the person often means that the behaviour was e.g. bad manners or inconsiderate.

I've told him too several times. He just doesn't care

Some things that annoy me, probably irrationality.

People who say resource or capacity at work

The term side eye

Parents who get overly involved when children are playing. For example joining in at the play park and trying to be fun dad. Just let the kids play.
