I have a few. Can't say them out loud (except to DH).

MIL & FIL - multi millionaires. Spend loads of money on themselves, lavish holidays, sports cars, only the very best restaurants etc. Never ever do they give a penny to their adult children (and one is flat broke). This is despite them both having been given property and a thriving business by a parent themselves.

My Dad - Overbearing, alcoholic, violent outbursts etc, all through our childhood. He's now decrepit and I have to do so much for him. I resent it.

Brother - keeps saying he's broke, whilst living like a rockstar. Just spend £20k on a holiday, lives in a £600k house, drives top of the range car, but often claims poverty - stop lying!

And breathe......

Anyone else?

I have a (ex) friend who cannot let things go

I met her at work and we became friends outside of work too

She pleads poverty all the bloody time but will find money for wants but can't afford needs-endless texts moaning about how skint she is,can't even afford dog food or a pint of milk, but wanted a kitten so bought one and will buy crap on temu

But the worst one is she rants on about things from years ago

Ill be minding my own business when I get a message from her, ranting on about her ex (who left her for another woman) 11 years ago

Shes had no contact with him (or her) but I am forced to go over and over it all again and and again (and how she broke another exs nose for no real reason apart from she felt like it,ive never met this guy but i feel i know everything about him)

She shagged a bloke after she broke up with him and from what I can gather, this bloke treated her like a princess but she got the ick and ghosted him

Cue hours, days, weeks, years of going over and over it again and again (the ick seems to have come about because she stayed over at his and he bought her some shampoo and a toothbrush-again,shes picked over this endlessly and by doing that, hes abusive)

Shes shagging another bloke who is messing her about and paying her for sex

Again, endless hours of going over every single tiny detail (he said, she said) and then I see them hand in hand walking down the street the next day, looking all loved up

Hours later,I get the messages again (rinse and repeat)

It's awful but I told her I don't really care anymore,I'm out of energy and have distanced myself from her as I can't keep going over every single thing over and over and she refuses to listen to advice, she just wants to moan but its all the same shit)

I'm a terrible person but I can't keep doing this

I got stuck with one of these for years. Over and over the same shit with me used as an unpaid counsellor. Energy sapping. Had to go NC for my sanity

IDespairOfTheHumanRace · 26/08/2025 18:25

Poorly spoken and articulated English - speech peppered with dropped aitches, glottal stops, double negatives and every sentence full of 'fillers' - "to be fair", "see what I mean"? and "like" amongst others.

Overuse of superlatives, particularly "super".

Sadly, it appears to be endemic now and, for me, at least, it is synonymous with fingernails being drawn down a blackboard and leaves me wanting to rip my ears off!

PIL who won’t sort out wills or POA. They are mid-80s both have health issues and they live abroad. Just fucking sort it out you idiots because death is a certainty and if you become incapacitated DH will have a hellish time with no POA. I’m not just pissed off I’m incandescent with rage at them.

You can always just say I don’t want to deal with it and let solicitors step in.

I have told my DP’s if they don’t sort it they will be at the mercy of social services and solicitors unless my siblings step in. I have shown them all the resources to help them with POA and if they choose not to do it that’s fine. I’ve never been an inheritance chaser so I can live with my decision.

I don’t want to be POA but I’ve made it clear if they don’t appoint one they are leaving their futures in the hands of SS and solicitors.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 26/08/2025 18:23

People who don't speak clearly. I have partial hearing loss and lip read, but there seems to be a whole subset of society who don't just mumble, they mumble into the top of their neck. So I can't only not hear them, I can't see their mouths either. I'm perfectly friendly, there's no need to look at the floor when you're talking to me!

Readyforslippers · 26/08/2025 18:23

People who never talk to their infants and young children, leave them sitting with their mobile phone at all times and then wonder why they have speech delays etc. If having a child is going to be an inconvenience to you to that extent then I strongly suggest you don't have one.

The same goes for parents who believe their child can do no wrong, you might be able to say that while they're school, but you'll be proved very wrong when they end up in prison the minute they become an adult. Do some parenting!

My mum does this, only discusses my dad instead. It’s been like that my whole life but I’d love to do what you’ve done and tell her I don’t want to talk about it anymore. It’s unbelievably draining.

I've been keeping a list of these for a while. I swear I'm not uptight. Buckle up, it's a long list.

  • specific requests for low value small ads items instead of just giving it away for free or asking for a euro, magnum mini ice creams, haribo, specific brands of coffee
  • people who bring children to saunas, even if they're quiet.
  • mumblers
  • knitted cardigans that look like jackets worn by muscle men, especially if they're polyester
  • people who make obvious suggestions about how to identify murder victims from Interpol posts, as if the police hadn't thought of doing that already, "check the serial number", "check the dental records".
  • people gifting voucher gifts like 1x Babysitting or 1x romantic cooked meal. What a lame idea.
  • Christmas dinner flavoured sandwiches/anything. Christmas panini, straight in the bin.
  • People who wear matching Christmas pyjamas.
  • people don't wash their clothes or bedding before using it.
  • people who say "you'll be speaking to my lawyer" about minor inconveniences. You know they don't have a lawyer and aren't intimidating anyone.
  • people who offer dodgy financial courses directed towards multiple audiences at once, advice like "stop living paycheck to paycheck" and then "buy rental property". Huh?
  • people who comment on social media about AI destroying the planet and then have photos of either meat or their short and long haul trips on their profile, or both.
  • old people who complain about the behaviour of "kids nowadays". We're one generation away from beating kids into submission at school and home, it might take time to adjust.
  • people who say they "dont watch TV" to sound superior but stream for hours. No one watches TV like its the 90s, you're better than no-one.
  • people who have feather pillows on their sofa with the feathers poking out and stabbing you in the arm. Get new ones or stop inviting me to your house.
  • people who sins"price point" instead of price.
  • people who post chatgpt answers to questions on social media, like they're doing a public service
  • people who comment on recipes and and about the weirdest substitutes, courgettes for sugar? NO, obviously not Janet.
  • people who say "picky bits" for food
  • people who suggest donating book hoards to local libraries, no one wants ancient dusty moldy books.
  • people who dont have a simple prepared answer to "what do you do?" and explain that it's complicated. I dont care what you do Marcus, it's small talk.

Do we have the same MIL? 😄

When I told mine I’d been diagnosed with breast cancer, she gave me a long blank stare, then turned to my husband and said “Well obviously, her having cancer is better than having hay fever like me. I’ll never be cured of my problem”

I didn’t expect any sympathy, so I wasn’t surprised!

Fuck me, that's one of the worst things I've read on here.

Hope you're OK 💐

bert3400 · 26/08/2025 18:20

My inlaws are mean and tight, they stayed in our small house (we live abroad) for 6 weeks, came to dinner about 4 times a week, not once did they bring any wine to have with dinner or offer any money for bills. They were happy drinking the wine we bought though. They expect us to pay for meals when we go out and we recently rented a beautiful house in the English countryside...paid for everything, they were the only ones out of 15 that didn't offer a contribution. I'm getting to the point I can't stand to be around them as the expectations are really pissing me off. I have told my husband how I feel and he agrees but what can we do ...I don't want him not to see them.

Catpiece · 26/08/2025 18:17

People who don’t give a shit about how they live or about how they force their neighbours to live. Have some fucking respect.

Yeah, that’s so annoying!! I really hate it when DSS says ‘math’ instead of maths. It massively grates. And ceram wrap rather than clingfilm. I love him to bits but it’s so jarring.

Edited

This makes me laugh. Is he saying Saran Wrap? That's what they call it in the states because its made by "Saran" I think haha! I also call it this - I'm annoying myself now thinking about it!

How DH takes ages to wake up on a weekend. He can wake up just fine on a work day. Yes he's groggy and a bit slow paced in a morning. But that's fine because he's out of bed. He takes fucking ages to wake up at the weekend and I have to wake him or he'd sleep all day.

I tell him how much it pisses me off to be faffing about trying to wake him for 10,20 minutes. But it never changes. Claims he can't help it. It makes me wanna cry with frustration.

Tbf that's my only gripe with him. So I'll continue to start my weekends with a quiet fury and resist the urge to shake him. At least for now.

MIL and FIL only ever talking about themselves. If we throw something into the conversation about us or the kids, we get a blank stare, no comment, until they can think of some way to turn this into a conversation about them. Example, we said DS was going to get married in France. Cue long stares, then FIL pipes up about the last time he was in France. No other comments made about the fairly big news that was.

How on earth do you suffer this

Booksaresick · 26/08/2025 18:11

Single mum acquaintances who tell me how worried they are about their financial situation while also telling me details of their gin delivery subscription in the same conversation.

Distant family member has just been made a “nanny” at 34. Announced on FB.
The 16 year old daughter who is pregnant was removed from her care as a toddler, for a year or so. Did not attend school for the last two years despite school attendance officers visiting ect. So no social skills, no importance of education, just sat at home in a flat on benefits vaping and morbidly obese. No prospects, nothing.
To make it worse, this whole child’s life she has constantly demanded pets- hamsters, rabbits, g pigs, dogs, cats. She gets them, and they are either dead or rehomed within 3 months. So my hopes aren’t high for a baby tbh.

Anyway pregnancy is announced on FB, I’m going to be a nanny at 34 ect. Along come the swarms of comments “ahhh congratulations hun” ect ect ect

Pisses me off that nobody is saying what we’re all thinking.
You failed your kid.

pinknailvarnish1 · 26/08/2025 18:09

DH stuffing things into the bin. Never thinks to empty it into the outside bin, oh no, let's just keep cramming it in - someone else will empty it eventually - yes, always fucking me!!

People who live vicariously through their children and share every milestone, every minor event of their kids’ lives on social media.
My name is Emma and I am a proud mummy of my 3 little darlings type description, as if there is nothing else in your life to describe you.
posting a picture of Emily passing her driving test, Josh passing his GCSEs with a detailed breakdown of how well he did, new haircut, first job, every day out documented in detail as if you couldn’t really celebrate unless it was out there for all to see.
You’d think some people have no life achievements of their own to celebrate. Makes me wonder how they will cope when kids grow up and leave home.
Can’t really say how much it pisses me off in real life in order to not upset friends, coworkers etc

smallpinecone · 26/08/2025 18:06

People who plan ‘girly/girlie’ anything. So childish and silly.

People who hang stupid signs around the house with instructions on how to use each room - ‘bathe’ ‘eat’ ‘relax’ etc.

People smoking weed in public. It stinks.
