I have a few. Can't say them out loud (except to DH).

MIL & FIL - multi millionaires. Spend loads of money on themselves, lavish holidays, sports cars, only the very best restaurants etc. Never ever do they give a penny to their adult children (and one is flat broke). This is despite them both having been given property and a thriving business by a parent themselves.

My Dad - Overbearing, alcoholic, violent outbursts etc, all through our childhood. He's now decrepit and I have to do so much for him. I resent it.

Brother - keeps saying he's broke, whilst living like a rockstar. Just spend £20k on a holiday, lives in a £600k house, drives top of the range car, but often claims poverty - stop lying!

And breathe......

Anyone else?

The fact I have saved for emergencies (£30k, 2 kids and just me, hardly enough to replace boiler and pay for a 2nd hand car) means I can't get Child Benefit, even though I am a single parent. Feckless relatives who never bothered to save earn 70k and get child benefit because of tax loopholes and get to go on lavish holidays. Pisses me off as they laugh about it being free money and how they "deserve" it.
I know it's not popular opinion but I really resent that because I planned for a rainy day I don't get decades of support like they do.

Dude, how many houses do you need to replace the boiler in if that's barely enough??

Also, CB isn't impacted by savings. Only income. UC looks at savings if that's what you mean.

Frankenpug23 · 26/08/2025 21:16

People who put shit quotes on social media- and expect loads of ‘you okay hun’ responses

One of my sister in laws- shes is rude & selfish

My DH and all his naps! No thought that I may have been up all night with a poorly child! No, he must nap!!! Drives me insane!!

My DH and his hobbies/ hoarding- our house is covered in his latest hobby.

My relative pisses me off. They are elderly now so can’t say anything about them in real life as I’d sound awful but here goes….

They are completely healthy but if someone dies of something…. They have it/think they have it.

They have lots of money but constantly say they can’t afford XYZ.

They have zero sympathy/empathy for anyone else.

They always play the victim.

They lie constantly then pretend they are confused.

They constantly talk badly about the people who do the most for them.

They are selfish.

They are unable to hold a conversation about anything unless it’s about them.

They really don’t care about anyone else accept themselves.

They treat everyone differently but pretend they treat them the same.

They are never, ever happy.

Some of their children are just like them and are awful.

They constantly shit stir and fake confusion/lie.

They bully one child in particular.

They are never happy for anyone’s achievements.

They have been like this their entire life.

But savings don't affect child benefit entitlement- do you mean UC?

My mum misgenders my lovely dog all the time. I've given up correcting her. No idea why she thinks my dog is male with a female name.

DP’s aunt misgenders her own cat! Its female but aunt always says “he” and “him”.

@somethingnewandexciting The fact I have saved for emergencies (£30k, 2 kids and just me, hardly enough to replace boiler and pay for a 2nd hand car) means I can't get Child Benefit, even though I am a single parent.

This is just a suggestion and I do not know how feasible or worthwhile this would be, so please do not do this without doing a bit of homework beforehand:

Are you able to increase pension contributions, and then use your £30k savings to compensate for your decreased earnings, until you get to a point when you can qualify for child benefit again?

I suspect pension pots aren't considered in whether people qualify for child benefit, so increasing pension contributions while slowly bleeding the savings pot could be a way to qualify for child benefit.

Thanks for taking the time to reply!
I think with pensions you can't touch them until 58 or something - the point of having the savings is so that we can function in a disaster without missing a beat. I've had a traumatic life and can't not have some back up nearby or my anxiety becomes a huge issue (all ironically part of why I can't get a higher paid job annoyingly!). So I'm stuck on just above minimum wage but, savings! I at least feel proud of me for having them, even if the govt think I'm not poor enough!

MNeters that start their theads by announcing they are long time users but they have cnanged their username.
Nobody gives a shit! Do you think we'd pay less attention if you were a newbie??? Give over.

I think there's often a reason for this - if they post something like "AIBU that DH wants to tie me up during sex", they're likely to get the "Interesting first post" or "School's not back yet then?", so they start by saying they're a long-time MNer.

Rainbow1901 · 26/08/2025 21:07

My DH who leaves things as pointers that he has done certain things instead of putting things away.
For example he will hoover and then not put the hoover away so that I will know that he has hoovered. Or mow the lawn and leave the mower out and not put it away in the shed. Or clean the bath or shower but leave the bath mat on the floor saying that he can't bend down to pick it up. Or do a DIY job about the house and leave his tools or materials out. Or not clean up as he goes meaning that I'm throwing away rubbish or boxes because he can't be bothered to put them in the bin or recycling. 🙄
To be fair I have told him about all these irritating things and he just says 'Oh Sorry, I'll do it next time' but just carries on.

Oh, and this is strangely specific but -

everyone who admires my dog and then says 'I had a Jack Russell once' (or their mother did, or their friend, or there was one down the road...)

She's a fucking Patterdale. They aren't like Jack Russells - they are WORSE! A MILLION TIMES WORSE!

Phew. And also she's a bitch, not a 'lovely boy'. Thank you.

I have a Patterdale cross, I feel your pain 😂

Hithismyname · 26/08/2025 21:06

People who don't put their rubbish in the bin.
People who don't pick up their dogs mess.
People who hockle and spit in the street and I probably have a million more. Oh and when I was attending my sons parents evening years ago one parent had her Pjamas and slippers on.

JackGrealishsCalves · 26/08/2025 18:45

And when you do come to empty it you
a) can't get the bloody bin bag out without wiggling it for ages (and it invariably rips)
b) stuff falls from the top of the bin onto the floor
Yes,,I have a bin stuffer too

I was that bin stuffer! Since OH died I don't stuff it as I'm now the one who has to get it out, usually splitting the bag too.

Poobs2022 · 26/08/2025 21:04

My dad NEVER offers to pick up a restaurant bill. My husband (annoyingly) always says "oh I'll get this". Dad's wife protests and says no. Dad stays silent or says "oh thanks". Not once does he offer first. My husband and BIL are often the first to buy a drink or offer to pay the bill and my Dad just takes the piss. Sure, we might insist but at LEAST offer so we can say no.

Dymaxion · 26/08/2025 21:04

DH spends all year just sitting on the sofa and watching TV, that's it , nothing else at all. Then when we go away he can't understand why he struggles to do anything normal like a short 20m walk. I tell him that he needs to move around more when at home but he doesn't want to !

Crikeyalmighty · 26/08/2025 21:03

@JudgeJ my late mum in law used to pop round and say ‘would you like me to take some of your ironing , I can see you are struggling to keep up on it ‘ - yep that would be because I’m working full time with a 14 week old out of necessity ( those were the days of sod all maternity leave ) and not working from home either. This was someone who didn’t work at all , late 50s /early 60s and hadn’t for at least 10 years as she was a trailing spouse on overseas assignments. I do know she meant well , but it was the use of ‘you’ and ‘I’ that somehow peed me off- no mention of her son doing any of these jobs.

You are not a terrible person. You are human & have quite rightly distanced yourself from 'drama' I did similar with a 'ex friend' who judged everyone for been too posh/stuck up/ cleaning obsessed. Where she was normal... Normal is not happily admitting you have never cleaned the kitchen floor in over 10 years, despite having 3 cats that piss & shit randomly everywhere.
Not been able to open the back door as there is recycling piled to the ceiling. Not even owning a toothbrush. Never kept a job for more than a few days, as everyone was mean. Bringing random men home & then complaining that you've got some weird STD. None of it her fault & then when you have ensured she gets Christmas & birthday presents as she had no family... Find she has 2 brothers & a sister! Plus then she can't even be bothered to send a birthday card, but sends a text saying how no one understands how hard it is for her. I just gave up stepped back & haven't heard from her in nearly 2 years. I had no idea how exhausting it was till I just stopped.

I think it's the same person lol

Shes never cleaned her house (I got the moaning texts about how it got her down but she never did anything about it)

Shes never brushed her teeth,in fact she had no hot water for well over a year as I refused to ring octopus on her behalf

I would buy her christmas/birthday presents as she claimed she'd get nothing from her mum

Utter bollocks, her mum props her up financially (her money goes on bills while friends money goes on tat and treats)
and she has two siblings (wails of 'but my sister is the golden child!im left out!')

Then it all comes out about her mum and she gets the most help out of the lot of them- a hell of a lot more help than ill ever have from my family but thats not good enough)

It's just the endless picking over details

I've heard a million times and her asking for my advice (which I give in good faith and if she followed it,would improve things)

Nope, she wants my advice to ignore it and then wonders why fuck all changes

I'm done

IDespairOfTheHumanRace · 26/08/2025 18:25

Poorly spoken and articulated English - speech peppered with dropped aitches, glottal stops, double negatives and every sentence full of 'fillers' - "to be fair", "see what I mean"? and "like" amongst others.

Overuse of superlatives, particularly "super".

Sadly, it appears to be endemic now and, for me, at least, it is synonymous with fingernails being drawn down a blackboard and leaves me wanting to rip my ears off!

So, you don't mind sentences starting with So? Drives me mad to hear it!

Gonners · 26/08/2025 20:55

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 26/08/2025 18:23

People who don't speak clearly. I have partial hearing loss and lip read, but there seems to be a whole subset of society who don't just mumble, they mumble into the top of their neck. So I can't only not hear them, I can't see their mouths either. I'm perfectly friendly, there's no need to look at the floor when you're talking to me!

That must be infuriating! Many years ago, an ex- (while struggling to find something nasty to say) yelled at me "I really hate the way your mouth moves when you speak!" I may have burst out laughing. I now live in an area where there are (for historical reasons) a lot of people who have profound hearing loss and we communicate just fine. Apparently I am very easy to lip-read.

My late MIL was like this, she once said 'Shall I clean your windows?' and I said I would have to check with OH as I wasn't sure which were 'my windows' and which were 'his windows', don't think she even noticed!

Haha I love this I might start telling him I emptied 'my kitchen bin' shall I empty 'your bathroom bin'? Passive aggressive word choice seems to be a way to make them listen!

JudgeJ · 26/08/2025 20:45

pinknailvarnish1 · 26/08/2025 18:09

DH stuffing things into the bin. Never thinks to empty it into the outside bin, oh no, let's just keep cramming it in - someone else will empty it eventually - yes, always fucking me!!

When we had our first house, 50+ years ago, the supermarkets would leave all the cardboard boxes out to taking shopping home. When we emptied the stuff OH would take the box to the bin, the old aluminium ones with a lid, and put the box inside without breaking it down, thus the bin was full! He got very annoyed if I said anything, he really didn't see a problem.

SpottyAardvark · 26/08/2025 20:44

My Mum’s overwhelming health anxiety and relentless catastrophising about health. Her own, and everyone else’s. In the last few weeks she has diagnosed her other half with a heart attack, dementia and rheumatoid arthritis. The poor man actually has a knackered knee from playing rugby. She has diagnosed herself with three different flavours of cancer. She actually has chronic bronchitis from smoking.

I get regularly get accused of having anorexia, not because I’m skinny or have an eating disorder, but because I’m not actually clinically obese. She takes all the ridiculous health fearmongering in the Daily Mail as fact. It’s exhausting.

The13thFairy · 26/08/2025 20:42

I am old, and most exercise classes I attend have other old people, usually women in them. The music is crap. I don't want to listen to George Michael. Or Michael sodding Buble warbling he just hasn't met you yet. The tutors seem to think - bunch of old women - I know, easy listening. We grew up in the sixties! Could we have some proper music please? FYI I don't say anything at the time; I remain silent and insert my earplugs. Rant over.

What pisses me off is posts appearing twice on Mumsnet threads. There is clearly something wrong with the program that it will accept two submissions of the same post in succession. It seems unfair to complain to the posters. No doubt they did not intend this to happen. From Horizon to double-posting, why is IT such shit?

Poor coding. Mostly male coders. It always goes back to men.
Why - because men.
