For those of you who think the flags and roundabout paintings are tacky...

What do you make of this house?

What would you call the board?

I’m thinking something like

Flag Talk
England Flag Appearances
National Symbolism Discussion

‘Sheldon Cooper’s Fun with Flags’, surely?

Manxexile · 26/08/2025 11:35

I see no "obvious reason" why someone would need to create a temporary name to start this thread

Alltheprettyseahorses · 26/08/2025 10:25

Out of curiosity, who's the Turkish saint?

Not St. George. He might have come from Turkmenistan but possibly from Cappodicia - Georgia (the country not the US state) is named after him, as well. Either way, not Turkish, wrong time frame.

Grammarnut · 26/08/2025 11:32

glittercunt · 26/08/2025 01:47

The types going nuts with flags right now are the same sorry who would paint their house this way. I thought most people noticed when folks have flags up, in windows or on poles on their property etc. People have been flying this for years, with the same shitty opinions and hate. It's just ramped uo at the mo.

The St. George flag is flown on churches on certain feast days, by law. Are they being tacky too?
What's wrong with England's flag? Mind, I think I will go for the White Dragon of Wessex myself, though Alfred, being a man of his time, was distinctly pro parts of Europe - not those bits full of Danes who fancied taking a bit of English real estate.

godmum56 · 26/08/2025 11:31

Caerulea · 26/08/2025 02:33

But not everyone who's flown it, etc, is a racist prick so I'm just not going to make that assumption. It also just feeds into the power they think the flag has - it's all a bit 'he who shall not be named'.

Also cannot find anything else for that photo so could be AI for all we know

Yes I agree about reclaiming our flag. I got mad when the Labour Party nicked the red rose

I think there needs to be a separate board now called ‘Flag Talk’.

Oh yes!

The photo in the OP reminds me of when the England men's footy team made it to the final of the Euros. A couple of houses near the school where I taught were like this. It seemed very OTT but I didn't see it as racist or thick. I would if they did it now, though.

I’ve always hung my one for football internationals. As soon as the football is done, it’s taken down.

A flag is not racist, but unlike America, we’ve nerved been into the flag hanging over here anyway. 🙄

Sorry I have only posted the link, it is from Google maps. I think it is sophisticated as it has the three lions. They are out of reach of random spray cans.

Edited

Haha! My dad was raised in Cotton.

Anyway - it's got the 3 lions on it so it's football related.

(edited to add - now I'm all nostalgic about my grandparents, I've not been back there since they died)

I am well impressed with in how good nick it's kept for decades! Loving the lions

Awful. Shouldn’t be allowed.

Can you explain why people should not be allowed to paint / hang their own nations flag on / by their own home ?

Do you fancy going to the USA ( or any other country) and telling them they have to follow your idea of right and wrong .

You ( and others ) seem to be presuming the home owners are in someway racist because they fly this country's flag .

I agree the one on the front door shouldn't be allowed but that's because imo it's a terrible paint job.

Yes it is - because it’s a public display and they literally want people to see it

So? People can decorate the front of their own homes however they like. I'm sure you do whether other people like it or not.

There's a house round our way completely painted bottle green. It looks worse than that flag house.

We have a rainbow house a few doors up. It looks horrendous

A guy on the street my mum lives on has spray painted a red cross on his house, he’s also done the same on peoples walls, fences and cars.

I like how door paint person didn’t realise England contains a second n, so had to squeeze one in.

So he's actually painted other people's houses and cars? Not sure I believe that. Probably just a rumour!

godlikeAI · 26/08/2025 11:03

Alltheprettyseahorses · 26/08/2025 10:24

I don't see anything wrong with it - if it's real of course. It's their house, nothing to do with anyone else. I saw a phrase on here a few days ago, buying political opinions wholesale, and it seems we've had the England flag added to that. But at least the OP isn't screaming, crying and throwing up on this thread, there's always a positive when you look for it. Fwiw, I've never been impressed by performative rightthink.

wuminzo · 26/08/2025 11:02

I'm flagging now from all this flag talk.

Ilovegerardway · 26/08/2025 10:58

Omg, three houses on one street on the shitty estate over the road from me started painting their houses like that.

Only, I don’t think any of them have a ladder as they all seemed to only do it as far up as they could reach, bar the dickead, who I watched with a paintbrush tied to a broom out of his top window. He soon gave up as well.

They all did it on return from the “protest” in our town last weekend (I put protest in brackets as it was just a hoard of bewildered Idiots stumbling around not really knowing what to do).

ExtraOnions · 26/08/2025 10:58

If I saw a red-cross sprayed on someone’s house, I would assume they had The Plague 😂

2dogsandabudgie · 26/08/2025 10:57

TonTonMacoute · 26/08/2025 10:44

Well, let's think about who started all this flag crap.

Who decided we need a flag for LGB pride? Who decided we then needed a trans flag? Who decided we needed to fly the LGBTGI+ flag all down Oxford Street? Who painted zebra crossings and police cars rainbow colours, decided sportsmen had to wear rainbow laces, National Trust guides had to have rainbow lanyards? Who decided Palestinian flags should be flown everywhere?

Its been ramping up for years, why are we surprised that people finally react when they are told that they can fly any flag except their own?

Yes this.

The new mythology and historical revision of the chattering classes. People actually feel clever when they trot out the Turkey nonsense they swallow unquestioningly from their group. It's all very silly.

My mind has been blown recently by some of the shite purporting to be history I’ve seen lately. It’s almost as though it’s perfectly acceptable to make history up in order to avoid discomfort or to bolster a false narrative.

JLou08 · 26/08/2025 10:54

There is a house like this in my town. It got done one year when England were doing well in the world cup. It adds a bit of character, I don't mind it at all.
I do think it's a shame all these idiots against flying the flag don't realise that they are playing right into the hands of the racists. They want you to complain about people being proud of their own country so they can turn it into a race issue. Well done to all those complaining about flags, really stirring up that division 👏

I was just suggesting who the PP might be referring to when she wrote "Turkish Saint". I don't think anything really. I just googled it in an attempt to learn.

I hope that you learned something, truly. Especially that if you’re going to refer to someone as being “Palestinian” you need to understand the connotations of that statement, particularly as Palestine has never been an actual country. It was an area called Judea, colonised by Romans and renamed, and included at least 3 other countries within its boundaries. St George was a Christian from the Middle East which is where the religion originated. It only became Muslim through conquests, occupation and colonialism. The name Palestinian was used briefly in the early 20th century by the Jews and Arabs living the the British mandated area, then coined by Yasser Arafat in 1964 to describe the non-Israeli Arab citizens living in disputed/occupied territories..
