For those of you who think the flags and roundabout paintings are tacky...

What do you make of this house?

Why does it make the area look racist? It's the British flag. Are all flags racist or just our own?

Just our own sadly, we’ve got the far right to thank for that.

Someone has attached a Union Jack to the telegraph pole at the bottom of my cul de sac . I really object to this as it makes the whole street appear racist.

You’re attitude is very dismissive. Some people do feel fearful, just because you don’t experience something personally doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. As a woman there are things in your life you’ve experienced that a man won’t experience and can’t fully understand, does that make your experiences any less real? Of course it doesn’t. Because someone can’t just swoop in and tell you how you feel.

Our identity, understanding and experiences help inform how we experience the world. Not everybody can have every experience so we try to understand things by listening to others. If you don’t understand something it’s ok to not voice an opinion about it.

Emotional blackmail to who? The people involved in this latest round of flag flying couldn’t care less about how their actions makes anyone feel so what would be the point of that.

I understand perfectly. Do you care how you make people feel? Do the posters who write snide, snobby insults for doing something that is genuinely harmless care how they make people feel? The answer is clearly no.

In the end, you can only make yourself happy. You don't want a flag? Don't put one up. If you don't understand why people want a flag, as you say it's fair not to voice an opinion about it. Live and let live is a wonderful philosophy.

Some of the posts here are great examplea of the part of the reason why the overreaction na sea of flags are happening...

Ilovegerardway · 27/08/2025 07:08

I now have one on the lamppost outside my house. They are all down our (long, one of the roads into town) street now. I came home yesterday and there they were. The area is a shit pit anyway, but now it just looks worse. They aren’t even level with each other, so it’s doing my head in for that reason too.

Really? I don't think there's any fear and nor does there need to be. Allegations of fear are nothing more than controlling via emotional blackmail when 'chavtastic' doesn't work. You can't tell people not to fly their own country's flag, that's ridiculous.

@Alltheprettyseahorses

I think someone feeling unease and even fear at the motivation behind flags right now is a little more than just being offended.

What would you call the board?

I’m thinking something like

Flag Talk
England Flag Appearances
National Symbolism Discussion

Fun with Flags?

Don’t knock it op, it’s a good way to tell where the dickheads live so you can avoid them.

That house is chavtastic. The whole flag thing is cringe.

I didn’t assume that, I actually didn’t mention the person displaying the flag? I mentioned the person who may feel uncomfortable about it.

Literally no one is stopping you from displaying a flag if you wish to so not quite sure why you’re getting your knickers in a twist about your country and your rights. But just because you can do something doesn’t mean everyone will support it.

If you don’t understand why some people don’t support it then read the full thread (or other similar threads, news articles or footage) you’ll find lots of reasons given. If these reasons don’t resonate with you then I’m not sure what would.

I don't display any flags myself. My daughter has a Taylor Swift flag in her room if that counts?

It also doesn't matter whether (general) you support it, no more than it matters if you support buying Branston beans over Tesco own brand. As for the reasons, they basically boil down to only thick lower-class plebby people have flags and we're far too busy displaying our credentials as fancy, pseudo-intellectual middle-class chatterers who have the Right™️ opinions to do anything like that but we'll still invent some brown people who we'll use as excuse to guilt others into doing what we want. If someone has a flag, it's fine. I probably won't like the plants that (general) you picked for your front garden, I'm not going to start threads complaining how declasse they are. There's a lot to be said for myob and live and let live (yes I know this is AIBU).

Cluborange666 · 26/08/2025 22:47

TonTonMacoute · 26/08/2025 10:44

Well, let's think about who started all this flag crap.

Who decided we need a flag for LGB pride? Who decided we then needed a trans flag? Who decided we needed to fly the LGBTGI+ flag all down Oxford Street? Who painted zebra crossings and police cars rainbow colours, decided sportsmen had to wear rainbow laces, National Trust guides had to have rainbow lanyards? Who decided Palestinian flags should be flown everywhere?

Its been ramping up for years, why are we surprised that people finally react when they are told that they can fly any flag except their own?

‘Their own’?
England also has the usual quota of gay people, bi, trans etc. They aren’t mutually exclusive you know.

K i suppose that’s ok then and I’ll tell some nonwhite people I know (including a few immigrants) it’s all ok. Nothing to see. Phew

So? People are allowed to display their own country's flag. The person claiming offence doesn't change that.

Strawberrryfields · 26/08/2025 22:34

Alltheprettyseahorses · 26/08/2025 22:17

Again, so what? Why would someone claiming offence outweigh the right to display your own country's flag? And I never assumed the colour of the person displaying the flag, you did that. One skin colour does not invalidate the rights of another of course, this isn't top trumps.

Non-white English people exist. And some of those people may feel uncomfortable with it. There are also white English people who feel that way. It’s not all about foreigners.

Okay, I'll bite...

Why would someone who isn't white feel uncomfortable about the English flag being displayed and why on earth would it matter? Their prejudices may well make the person with the flag feel uncomfortable and should certainly not override the right to display a national flag. Imagine if an English person went to Belize or somewhere and started complaining about their national flag being displayed. They'd rightly be given short shrift.

Well done to everyone taking part 😳🙄

And doing what, exactly? What do they deserve a clap on the back for precisely? Other than sticking up a flag that they bloody well know will make non white people uncomfortable?

Strangely the telly has contrived to find a shedload of Londoners - all of colour, at least two stating that they are immigrants and they think well of England - who like the flags and see nothing wrong with flying them. Gosh.

There’s now a whole slew of posts about dangerous asylum seekers appearing.

Maybe they could all get shunted into Politics?

Or down a toilet preferably 💩
