Plane seats - refused to swap

Annoyed321 · 25/08/2025 16:28

please bear with me, I really need to vent but I need advice too.

Holiday with DH, 8 year old DD and 5 year old DS. Our seats were allocated away from each other. Not even on same aisle literally scattered on different parts of the plane. DH books and sorts checking in and I don’t usually get involved. He tried to apparently check in 24 hours before the flight but there was an error (he didn’t tell me), he was unable to check in and was advised online chat to see a member of staff at airport when we were flying, we get to check in on day of flight and lady says she can’t sit us together. I pleaded with her to at least let there be one of us sat with each child, no problem about all 4 of us sitting together.

She said to ask people when we get to the seat if anyone will swap with us. When we got there everyone refused, which I don’t really blame them as they checked in and chose their seats we didn’t or couldn’t.

I got very emotional as my 5 year old was crying about not sitting next to me DH as usual was unbothered and was just standing around looking unfazed. I’m really embarrassed about my reaction but he said it’s fine and I said it’s not fine “I’m not having my kids sat in between strangers”. It wasn’t as dramatic as I’m making out as it was over very quickly as the cabin crew we spoke to on boarding were able to allocate 2 seats together. Myself and my 5 year old took it and DH sat 2 rows In front of DD who was sat inbetween 2 men, DH was also sat between 2 guys so made no difference where I put her.

I was upset the entire flight and kept asking DH to keep an eye on DD, DH kept rolling his eyes and ignoring me. I felt like a bad mother leaving my child sat there with strangers. I feel embarrassed incase anyone videoed me at the start asking/pleading with people to please swap seats to allow me to sit next to my 2 kids. I only asked about 2 people and they avoided eye contact and ignored me, again I get it.

advice: DH is old fashioned (or should say a complete knob) he won’t share the booking details of flight with me as he’s worried I will mess up the booking, like I’m a stupid child! So I need advice please how can I make sure I am sat next to my kids on flight back home? I will need a booking reference I know which I will have to keep asking him for but the holiday was booked via Expedia and I think that’s what messed up when was trying to check in online 24 hours before. How can I check in if flights were booked with Expedia? I will call them if he doesn’t share booking ref but I doubt they will speak to me due to data protection. Any advice please?

Please be kind and don’t make me feel worse than I feel. Can anyone at least relate with me about how upset I was about DD sat alone? I am a survivor of childhood SA so my feelings might be out of place but I also read a news article literally a few days before flight if a 15 year old girl getting assaulted by a fellow passenger during a flight do these things do happen.

Come on now, we know most peoples reason to not move is self entitlement and grumpiness.

Yet nothing self entitled in expecting them to move?

I am really quite shocked and alittle appalled that none of the four men either side of your dh or dd would swap with your dh or dd, if they were single.

I have experienced this before years ago when dc were much younger, and i was as upset as you were, I am sure most people would be with you. But I asked a few people if they'd mind moving while we were waiting to board and I think it was the third person I asked who said they'd be happy to.

Definitely try to sort this out now with the airline if you can rather than wait until the day.

Edited

Those men were in aisle and window seats, so very likely paid to avoid the dreaded middle seat. The fact they were by themselves is irrelevant.

But we all make mistakes. If I were on my own or with adults I'd move.

But its not a single mistake its what a lot of entitled parents do on a regular basis as they know their will be some mug on the plane who will swap with them and then when nobody does they cry and have a tantrum about it

by the sounds of it if they would swap it would have been to a middle seat. Meaning they would have had to give up their aisle or window seat that they would have had to pay to book.

Check in for lots of flights only opens 24 hours before. We have flown with BA three times over the last year and for all of them it was 24 hours before departure. Also used 3rd party for all of them and apart from actually buying the tickets, everything was directly with the airline.

Not for a specific airline that starts with E and J and is orange… it’s 7 days

No if people have paid for a seat their will be a reason they've chosen that seat whether that is to sit with a partner a certain area of the plane or like me will only sit in an aisle seat. This is why I pay so I will not move for anyone.

I booked through a 3rd party (travel company) recently and you still have to check in with the airline yourself. Your DH will have been sent an email from the airline 28-30 days prior to your flight stating that check-in was open. At that stage, if you need seats together, you go on line and ‘check in’ at which point you select your tickets… and pay. Sorry, but this is still a DH issue.

If you need paired seats you do NOT leave it to 24hrs prior to departure to select your seats. Doesn’t matter whether it is BA, Easy Jet etc… check in is done by the lead passenger as you have to enter passport details and confirm whether visa are needed/obtained.

Check in for lots of flights only opens 24 hours before. We have flown with BA three times over the last year and for all of them it was 24 hours before departure. Also used 3rd party for all of them and apart from actually buying the tickets, everything was directly with the airline.

I understand that, which is why I referenced childless people in my post. I personally don't like to treat people as less worthy just because they don't have kids. Everyone has their reasons - physical disabilities, anxiety (or other non visible disabilities) toilets, preferring a window seat, being tucked away, etc.

Come on now, we know most peoples reason to not move is self entitlement and grumpiness.

CoreyTaylorsbiggestfan · 25/08/2025 18:37

The error may have been when he tried to check in he couldn’t get seats together. @Annoyed321
I always pay at the point of booking to ensure our seats are together. I even do this if it’s just me and my husband. He has epilepsy so if he has a seizure I am there and know what to advise the flight attendant. We wouldn’t explain his medical history to random people who didn’t book seats with their children. I would just decline.
If I was travelling alone I would just wait till check in.
Its a massive risk waiting till check in especially in the height of summer holidays!

Yep, and wanting your child sitting next you doesn’t trump those reasons.

Cosyblankets · 25/08/2025 18:37

Sorry if I've missed this but surely he could have paid for the seats when he booked?

mylovedoesitgood · 25/08/2025 18:35

OhHellolittleone · 25/08/2025 18:26

I think the OP explained how this happens.

We can never check in online with a lap baby. So in theory my other child could be apart from us. My husband has a BA card that lets him book a seat when he books the flight, so we usually do, but I think generally they only offer this at online check in time.

I just googled and BA guarantee children will be with parents until 12 which seems sensible and probs why we have never encountered any issues or seen all these bizarre situations where people argue about seats.

I did once swap with someone when I had a B seat on the upper deck of a BA flight, someone asked to swap assuring me she also had a B seat… Well I didn’t realise it was 3 abreast and not 2 downstairs. will never fall for that again.

OP’s husband messed up at the time of booking, also British Airways typically charge more than the budget airlines, as explained earlier, so that’s why you’ve not experienced the “bizarre situations”.

Tay596 · 25/08/2025 18:35

If you book with easyjet you can check in weeks in advance, it's a million times better than Ryanair and BA's crappy last minute policy.

Why don't you and your husband book stuff together OP, you can both keep an eye on each other then!

Frenchbluesea · 25/08/2025 18:34

You have no need to feel embarrassed by what you said or did. I’d be very upset in your shoes too. Unless those passengers were sitting by their own children, I think it’s pretty shitty they didn’t move

ClareBlue · 25/08/2025 18:34

SchrodingersParrot · 25/08/2025 18:29

I won't use third party sites to book flights anymore due to numerous problems in the past.

Me neither. I use third-party sites as a search engine to find the flight options, then go to the airline's website and book directly.

This is the way to go. If you get a delay or are bumped and are entitled to compo it is an absolute nightmare trying to process it with a 3rd Party booking. Direct bookings 10 times easier and some like Wizz give you 20 perc extra if you put it in a wallet to spend on flights. They wont even talk to 3rd Parties.

Gabbycat245 · 25/08/2025 18:34

Overnightoatsareyummy · 25/08/2025 18:25

Well obviously you are not the target audience here. It’s childless single people travelling that it makes no real difference to if it’s 20D or 24D, whereas to young families this would cause separating them.

I think all the issue happened as we booked via 3rd party. Any one with experience of this? Why are they asking us to come to airport and sort out face to face why not over the phone or online? Sorry for my ranting earlier but DH I know didn’t skimp on the price. This is the cheapest holiday we have ever been on and money is not an issue. He’s never booked 3rd party before. He’s not perfect in anyway but I think I wrongly blamed it on him, apparently it’s a well known issue with the site. I will name the airline when I get home safely!

I don't think this is only an issue when booking through third parties, though things may have changed in the last few years.

We flew with our children a lot when they were young. Even though we were flying long haul and always booked directly through the airline, we experienced this same problem. The online systems wouldn't allow us to book seats because children were included and we couldn't get allocated seats until we checked in at the airport. It was frustrating, but they did always manage to seat us together.

A few years ago, my DS went on a shorthaul domestic flight with a friend. They were both 15 and classed as unaccompanied minors. We wanted them to sit together, especially because his friend was an inexperienced flyer. They were not allowed to book seats online so we phoned the airline. They said there was no way to book their seats in advance because they were unaccompanied minors. It seemed bonkers to us! In the end, they weren't seated together but were fine.

Slowlyslowlysurely · 25/08/2025 18:32

This happened to us flying to the US this summer with an Irish airline. All the adults could check in but not our youngest - we had pre booked seats on booking but the airline changed the flight time very slightly and we were allocated seats, despite paying.

Ablondiebutagoody · 25/08/2025 18:31

What's the airline? Are you sure that you haven't been checked in for both legs already?

I fly easyjet a lot, never pay for seats and they always put me and DS together.

CautiousLurker01 · 25/08/2025 18:31

BUMCHEESE · 25/08/2025 18:21

Sometimes check in only opens 24h in advance.

Not all airports allow online check in.

This would have been stated at the time of booking and Dh invited to select and pay for booked specific seats. Have travelled with my children for 20 years. Several dozen airlines. Always been able to book seats together with kids whether at booking or at check in…. But there was a fee.

DH did not want to pay the required fee.

Annoyed321 · 25/08/2025 16:43

Sorry I don’t think I’m being clear. We would have been able to choose our seats when we checked in but he couldn’t complete it online. There was an error on the system as it’s booked via 3rd party. He’s done it before and I’ve seen him 24 hours before we check in and choose our seats but this time there was an error which he didn’t tell me about

Even checking in 24 hours before a flight doesn't guarantee you'll all be sat together, because most people pay for seat allocations when they book the flight.
Also, you are setting your children up for a lifetime of anxiety if you fall apart like that in front of them.
