Am I being a spoilt brat here?

Family member discovered recently that I am having private treatment for a condition I have which isn’t covered by the NHS. The cost of which has become increasingly difficult as I’m already on a low income.

Said family member has recently come into some money. They offered to pay some money towards my treatment. I accepted. Then few days later said individual sends message to say they have sent equal amount of money to other family members to have fun with. Other family members all have significantly higher household income.

Am I being a complete brat feeling a bit sad about this? My money was specifically for something which is rather unpleasant however necessary. Not for fun. Meanwhile family members who don’t have to deal with anything like the same challenges are rewarded with money they don’t need.

The issue I’m dealing with already makes me
incredibly self conscious and has singled me out from childhood as being different. At the moment I still feel like the child who was punished for being like this

From the posting history I’m guessing it’s a weight loss treatment (surgery? WLIs?, something along those lines).

You might think they’ve not given you any money for fun things, but they’ve given you the opportunity to improve your quality of life so that you can do fun things. There are people doing this without wealthy family members picking up the cost. If it matters to you, you’ll find a way,

Oh weight loss injections?..😬 I was thinking with the post about a wheel chair cortisone injections or something.
But surely if it stops you needing a wheelchair nhs would provide?

PinchOfVom · 25/08/2025 07:38

Yeah, you’re completely wrong here

InMyOpenOnion · 25/08/2025 07:37

I'm guessing the donor is a parent and the other recipients are siblings? Most parents care equally about all their children and are walking the line between helping out and treating everyone fairly. They have given all of you money, promoted by your needs. Be appreciative of the gift.

MrsDoubtfire1 · 25/08/2025 07:37

Focus on yourself and do not compare yourself with others. Hold your head up high, work towards your goal and be proud of yourself when you attain it. Why are you concerned about the decisions of others when they do not directly affect you? Said family member was very kind to share money in equal proportions. It was theirs to share and theirs to decide who got it. Be grateful and gracious.

If you are suffering with poor mental health it’s not a good idea to post on AIBU. You will get honest answers and sometimes read things you don’t like. I think your relative was being fair but perhaps the wording wasn’t great.

alittlebitlessofme · 25/08/2025 01:47

Just to clarify I’m not sad about them getting the money. It’s the way it has been phrased as being fun money for them.

Probably not the best use of words but I am sure it wasn't intentional.
Splitting money /sharing from inheritance is always going to be perceived as unfair by someone.
I hope you continue to benefit from your treatment

Jitterbuggs · 25/08/2025 07:31

Kindly OP, it's your relative's money to do what they want to do with. It's really kind that they're given you some. I get you are disappointed that you aren't in a better position, but this is not your family's fault.

Try to look on this positively. The extra cash means you can continue the treatment that improves your life

Ok I get it. I’m awful and should just let myself rot in a corner.
By the way I didn’t ask for any money I have done it all on my own for years without asking for help or a penny from anyone.
But I’m an ungrateful cow clearly.
leaving the thread now before my already fragile mental health falls any lower.

I mean, if people had any doubt about you being a spoilt brat before, they certainly don’t now….. Hmm

Phatgurslyms · 25/08/2025 07:26

You are in a bad place financially and physically but it would be worse if they had not intervened. Count your blessings.

Feenduvetcover · 25/08/2025 07:19

Oh op I’m sorry you feel the way you do.

But the money was a gift and if you could have it on booze, birds and fast cars if you’d wanted to. (Bonus points to anyone who gets the reference without google!)

have you made sure you’re claiming all the help you’re entitled to like pip etc?

CloseThatDoor · 25/08/2025 07:18

Is the private medical procedure to remove the chip on your shoulder?

None of this is anybody else's fault so don't take it out on them. It's understandable that you're having a tough time but that's no excuse for throwing your toys out of the pram and blaming everyone else. I have so many health conditions but I've never once taken it out on others. It sucks but it is what it is.

OperationMayday · 25/08/2025 07:12

OP, I hope you read through the replies before you have the thread removed because it’s not gone how you wanted.

The person who GAVE you money can give anyone money because it’s THEIR money. It’s not for you to say what someone else does with their money and the fact this person had to tell you makes me realise what’s going on.

LillyPJ · 25/08/2025 07:10

For goodness sake, somebody gave you some money and you're moaning about it! The fact that they're better off than you is irrelevant. Do you give cheaper presents to richer friends? Be grateful, and stop looking at what everybody else has got.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 25/08/2025 06:54

alittlebitlessofme · 25/08/2025 02:10

There is no money for fun here anymore. When I say I’m on the breadline I literally mean it. I’m now down to single figures in my bank account. Family members money went straight to pay for another course of treatment. And it went towards, it didn’t fully cover the cost by quite along way.

How's that anyone's fault, did you expect her to cover the full cost?

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 25/08/2025 06:53

chatgptsbestmate · 25/08/2025 06:40

It absolutely isn't. You're right

But I think we can (well, I can) understand that, having suffered for years, it felt truly beautiful to be helped. The OP felt special and loved.

And then everyone was given the same money and yet THEY could have fun wirh THEIR money

Can't everyone see that although anyone can spend their money any way they choose, the emotion attached to the gift for the OP, was diminished a little after the general largesse ?

No, because she still got given a generous gift and someone else getting a similar gift doesn't diminish the spirit it was given to OP in.

OP is choosing to diminish it by comparing and being entitled.

No one's fault she's on the breadline, people have sympathised with that and the chronic issue, but to begrudge a gift to someone else doesn't come off well.

didgeridid · 25/08/2025 06:52

You are being a spoilt brat.

Someone had kindly offered you money which you have accepted. You can not begrudge others doing the same. Doesn't matter what it is used for.

Pricelessadvice · 25/08/2025 06:48

Your replies to people aren’t painting you in glory. You were gifted some money and your relative felt that they ought to gift money to others in the name of fairness.
Did you expect special treatment? Or extra money sent to you so you’d get more than them?

It sucks to have a condition that you have to live with, but that’s just the cards life dealt you unfortunately (believe me, I know).

Try and see it differently- your relative has given you some money for your treatment so you don’t have to eat into your own savings or whatever. That’s a huge bonus.

Lou670 · 25/08/2025 06:41

So the relative has gifted you money for your treatment. What they did after that is none of your business and not relevant to you. All that is relevant is that they have gifted to you. Are you going to bitter about everyone that spends money on 'fun'? There will always be people in a better position to you and also people in a worse position than you; financially and healthwise.

Ilovesshopping · 25/08/2025 06:41

I think you’re being angry at the wrong people here.
Paying for medical treatments isn’t the responsibility of your family, but they’ve been kind enough to help you out.
They are also aware that given money one and not others could cause resentment and fallout, so want to keep everything fair.
What would you prefer- not to have the money at all? They may well continue to help you with your treatments in future if they see it benefits you.

chatgptsbestmate · 25/08/2025 06:40

decenteringmen · 25/08/2025 06:36

Yes, you are being a brat. It's absolutely none of your business how this generous family member spends their money.

It absolutely isn't. You're right

BeesUnicornPot · 25/08/2025 06:38

How would you have afforded the treatment if the family member hadn’t offered?

Perhaps rephrase it in your mind, so presumably you’d have had to pay for it yourself? So you’re doing that and you also have the family members fun money?

decenteringmen · 25/08/2025 06:36

Yes, you are being a brat. It's absolutely none of your business how this generous family member spends their money.

legsekeven · 25/08/2025 06:34

Op calm down. No one attacked you! Comparison is the thief of joy. Try and be happy that the money has allowed you to continue your treatment (wherever it’s for). You really don’t know the ins and outs of your siblings finances, everyone has stuff going on. I’m sure your relative meant no offence and would be upset to know you are hurt.

TheAmusedQuail · 25/08/2025 06:30

The alternative was that your relative give none of you money. In which case you wouldn't have been able to pay for this round of treatment.

You've invited opinions in AIBU and can't really be upset if people give them unfortunately.
