Sister went nuts over a cup of coffee

CrashBambiCoot · 24/08/2025 14:19

my sister visits my house around 3 times a week. Every time she comes she takes the piss out of my coffee calling it “half a cup of coffee” etc

She last visited Friday where I made her a coffee and she snapped “oh come on, fill it up for fucks sake” saying I’d only half filled the mug (I hadn’t).

This morning she turns up. I make coffee, as I was taking it into the living room she looks into the mugs and screams “half a cup of coffee”. I snap back “I don’t fill it to the top so it doesn’t get spilled! Nobody fills coffee right to the top” so she started dancing around me acting crazy shouting “ooo don’t spill it” etc before suddenly lunging at me and shouting in my face - coffee got spilt.

Now I’ve said I’m not making her coffee anymore. That’s it. Sick of the piss taking and ranting and raving. DH witnessed all this and basically joined in with her. She’s 42, DH is 50.

its not normal to fill coffee right to the top is it??? And the hysterics is certainly not normal is it?

Mackerelfillets · 25/08/2025 19:35

I wouldn't fall out with her about it but she would be making her own coffee in future. Your husband though....that's not nice. I'd be having words with him.

namechangedforvalidreasons · 25/08/2025 19:29

what the fuck did I just read!

Sis sounds like she needs to calm TF down. Don’t know why your DH is joining in. That’s the weirdest part. I’m in the don’t overfill it camp. I don’t like a very full cup of boiling hot liquid, mainly cos I am known to be clumsy, but even if I did, what you’ve described ain’t normal.

ArtfulDenimSheep · 25/08/2025 19:26

I would be a bit annoyed if someone only presented me with half a cup of coffee/tea but doubt I'd say anything. If you know that your sister reacts in this way why didn't you just fill hers up a bit more, not so any gets spilled but just up to about 1-1.5 cm to the top.

Airspice · 25/08/2025 19:24

Well I think it’s bonkers behaviour but I also can’t start half filled up cups of tea/coffee 😄 a cm from the top is max, I like a decent sized cup.

Zoec1975 · 25/08/2025 19:23

Doesn’t matter where you fill it,she is being a idiot, and I would tell her to make her own or she is not welcome anymore.

Cycleaway · 25/08/2025 19:23

How rude. Why does she think it’s okay to come to your house and speak to you like that?! She sounds like a bulshy teenager. Is she okay?!

If you’re nice enough to invite her back after that behaviour, there’s a simple solution, which is not to offer her a cup of coffee again

gardenflowergirl · 25/08/2025 19:22

If you go to any coffee shop and order any type of coffee it's always filled to the top. I fill mine to the top at home as well, never spill it.

EveningSpread · 25/08/2025 19:21

My mum likes half a mug of everything.

If it was a machine made strong coffee then I’d totally see why it was short.

But in reality, who the actual f complains about a drink they’re given in someone else’s house?

I might say “ohh I like a touch more milk please” if I was being really picky, or remind someone I have sugar if I can’t have it without (I don’t, but people do).

Having a go at you like that is clearly just trying to assert dominance over nothing. I believe people call it “negging”.

Tell her to make her own if she doesn’t like it. Then breezily go out and do something fun next time she complains.

Is your husband always a twat, and has he got form for ganging up on you with your sister? Sounds potentially suspicious to me.

OhBuggerandArse · 25/08/2025 19:21

I have a family member who doesn't fill glasses or cups up properly. It is spectacularly annoying and it definitely gives me rage.

Left · 25/08/2025 19:21

This post really needed a photo to show the cup size and fill level of coffee offered. Hope OP comes back to update. Intrigued to see what level of coffee would drive an adult to such unhinged behaviour tbh 😆

lovethenights · 25/08/2025 19:21

I like a full cup of coffee.
When you say half do you mean like half the cup is empty if thats the case you are odd.

Daisythepussycat · 25/08/2025 19:20

Don't ever let her go near Italy - they give you a thimbleful there. Seriously, this is a ludicrous and borderline insane way to behave, and it makes me wonder if she has issues. At best it is rude, ungrateful and bullying; at worst it is completely nuts. And WTAF is your husband playing at, taking her side instead of supporting you? I would be hesitant to invite her again, but if she does turn up give her the tiniest espresso cup you can find, with something disgusting like supermarket own brand instant in it - that'll learn 'er!

mrlistersgelfbride · 25/08/2025 19:19

Ridiculous behaviour from them.

Your sister should be grateful you made her a cup of coffee, your husband was foolish to side with her and they both need to grow the fuck up.

CountryMouse22 · 25/08/2025 19:18

Seems to have MH issues. This is not the behaviour of a mature woman.

Reanimated · 25/08/2025 19:17

Clearly she is crazy. Although short cups of any drink in this house is met with a withering look and the pourer is asked if the tide is out.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 25/08/2025 19:15

She’s 42! If you hadn’t have put her age I’d have thought she was around 12.

She does sound batshit unless when she is saying half a cup you mean you actually give her one of those tiny little cups you see in some cafes. As you say, most people don’t follow a mug up to the top due to spillage. That said, I always remember growing up and being told ‘has the vicar come to tea again today’ if the vicar’s ‘collar’ was too noticeable!

MaryGreenhill · 24/08/2025 14:26

They didn't treat you very nicely @CrashBambiCoot . I would never make another cup of anything for her nor your DH . Let them stew .

This exactly. I don't think I'd ever make her anything ever again. Just boil the kettle and tell her to help herself, graceless cow that she is. And as for your DH ... never make him tea or coffee again either.

JayJayj · 25/08/2025 19:13

Her reaction seems crazy BUT I need a photo of said coffee to give my true vote

Your sister sounds a little unhinged ! That’s an extreme reaction!

If I make a normal , instant coffee then I fill it almost to the top but not enough so I have to be really careful not to spill it. If I make a machine coffee , like a Cappucino , then I don’t fill it to the top as it’s too much milk

justanotherdrama · 25/08/2025 19:09

I mean I wouldn’t invite your sister round ever again and get rid of “D” h
they both sound absolutely mental!

I decluttered myself of any negative people out my life when I was really sick 5 years ago - anyone that doesn’t have my back is out

best decision I made - you need people you can rely on in life, not people who make fun of you and are negative

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/08/2025 19:08

You both sound ridiculous tbh. If my sister made me half a cup, I’d tell it to put some more bloody water in it, or I’d do it myself.

You sound ridiculously paranoid and your sister sounds like she’s 8,

OneKhakiFish · 25/08/2025 19:04

It doesn't matter hiw you do things her behaviour was well out of order and your DH siding with her wouldve got me so angry shed be out the door and hed be getting told in no uncertain terms, treat me with respect or get the fk out if my life. If i dont do drinks exactly to how people like it they do it themselves, its not an issue, theyre both odd
