Sister went nuts over a cup of coffee

CrashBambiCoot · 24/08/2025 14:19

my sister visits my house around 3 times a week. Every time she comes she takes the piss out of my coffee calling it “half a cup of coffee” etc

She last visited Friday where I made her a coffee and she snapped “oh come on, fill it up for fucks sake” saying I’d only half filled the mug (I hadn’t).

This morning she turns up. I make coffee, as I was taking it into the living room she looks into the mugs and screams “half a cup of coffee”. I snap back “I don’t fill it to the top so it doesn’t get spilled! Nobody fills coffee right to the top” so she started dancing around me acting crazy shouting “ooo don’t spill it” etc before suddenly lunging at me and shouting in my face - coffee got spilt.

Now I’ve said I’m not making her coffee anymore. That’s it. Sick of the piss taking and ranting and raving. DH witnessed all this and basically joined in with her. She’s 42, DH is 50.

its not normal to fill coffee right to the top is it??? And the hysterics is certainly not normal is it?

We need a photo. I’ve seen some shit half cups in my time

PestoHoliday · 24/08/2025 16:07

I expect this is hyperbole from the OP. 'Screaming in her face' sounds unlikely behaviour from an adult

Op obviously makes ridiculously small coffees. This must be the case or her sister, who has commented repeatedly about wanting a properly full cup, and her own husband wouldn't have been united on this.

CherryVanillaPie · 24/08/2025 16:06

Your sister sounds mentally ill

pestowithwalnuts · 24/08/2025 16:05

She doesn't sound quite right in the head..And she sounds like a bully

Why not just have second cup?

Because I don't want two underfilled cups, I want one proper cup.

Poodlelove · 24/08/2025 16:03

What a rude and horrible person.
Don't make her a drink , don't invite her round , what a cow.

Pub's just the other side of the river. They know how to make tea and coffee - we decided it was easier to just drink water afterwards, as she's not going to suddenly get the hang of making tea differently now.

But tipping it out when you’ve made it is really odd. Can you not just tell her you want it stronger? Seems very aggressive of her to sweep in and tip most out.

That is literally half a cup of coffee. I'm not exaggerating for comic effect - if you put a ruler in that, the level would be half the height of the cup. Please explain?

It’s an espresso.

They are pretty strong so I don't need much in terms of volume. Quality over quantity, any time!

Cherrysoup · 24/08/2025 15:50

Did you not just re-make it? I’d have gone mad if she tipped it out to make it her way. Surely politeness dictates that you allow people to drink tea how they want it?

Surely you’re weighing the coffee beans and water anyway so the brewing ratio is correct? You wouldn’t be able to just fill the cup up after the coffee has brewed because you’d need to grind more coffee Confused

I don't. I know how far to fill the coffee grinder to make either a large or small pot of coffee.

Clumsycorvid · 24/08/2025 15:58

I live and breathe hot drinks - multiple a day.
Coffee, tea, herbal teas... must be a fishbowl sized mug at home but I would not expect anyone to cater out of their norms for me. I smile and lovingly appreciate what I'm given and perhaps ask for more shortly after.

What unhinged behaviour.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 24/08/2025 15:58

This thread… ‘I expect this….’ And ‘I expect that…’ When you’re at someone else’s house, you politely accept what you are given (having said what your preferences are with regards to milk and sugar.) If you are given a thimbleful of Mellow Birds, or a bucket of that dishwater pictured upthread, then that’s what you drink. Then after the visit, you go home and have your drink the way you ‘expect’ it.

However, OPs situation is different I think because of the frequency of the visits and the regularity of the request for more coffee. OP - your sister has no manners, and neither do you. Your sister has no manners because she is deranged, and you have no manners because she visits you three times a week and you have never accepted that this is clearly a huge issue for her and just poured in a little bit more coffee to pacify her. When you were children, did one of you always ‘win’? Why are you both trying to ‘win’ now?

godmum56 · 24/08/2025 15:57

you are at home FFS, just have a second cup!

Smartiepants79 · 24/08/2025 14:30

I read these things on mumsnet sometimes and I just can’t really believe they’re real.
Whose sister actually repeatedly visits and is rude and unkind to them over how they make the coffee? And who allows it to happen more than twice without telling that sister to stop, make their own coffee or leave?
The whole thing is farcical and sounds like you’re both about 7 years old.

I thought the same.

My coffees are usually like this 😊 though I will ask people what type they want and supply something a bit larger. I don't have those massive grande cups or mugs that some people/cafés have though.

As far as I’m concerned, @CrashBambiCoot, it is normal to fill a coffee cup/mug to about 1-1.5cm from the brim. And as a caffeine addict, I want as much of the life-giving liquid as possible. But there is no way I’d be rude like your SIL if I felt my coffee wasn’t full enough - she was a rude mare.

Could you get a bigger mug, so you don’t have to fill it too full, but she is still getting lots of coffee?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 24/08/2025 15:49

You've not met my MIL.

Lovely lady, an all round good person - but, oh my Christ, the tea she makes is absolutely foul. It starts with whatever was the cheapest teabags in the supermarket, then the bag of dust and sadness has about 2 inches of water applied and then another inch of skimmed milk about 3 seconds later, leaving at least an inch of air between the rim and the puddle of desolation at the bottom.

We took our own teabags last time we visited and DP insisted upon making her a tea (her preferred way for her tea, our preferred strong-tea-and-wave-the-milk-at-it-from-across-the-kitchen with a full cup). Before he'd finished, she'd swept in, seen our cups, grabbed them off the countertop and poured most of it down the sink to add milk to just over the 5/8ths level.

Coffee was coffee, hot water. Not great, needed more coffee, a better coffee and more hot water, but at least it couldn't turn into the abomination that is the lovely MIL's disgusting dishwater tea.

It's especially annoying when the mugs are smaller than you're used to, as well.

At MIL's I always had to make myself a 2nd cuppa, because her mugs were small and only 2/3 full. She bought a "big" mug specially for me, which was very sweet of her, but it's still smaller than the ones I use at home, so I still find myself wanting more tea or coffee.

And to make matters worse, her coffee is piss-weak instant and barely drinkable, so I always have tea, which is harder to fuck up.

Next time she's here, I think I'll make her a big pot of my rocket fuel espresso so she knows what real coffee's like.

Tell her to bring her own in future. Simple solution. Bigger issue is your Dh hanging up with her, feels like bullying. I’d be having serious words with him, wtf was he thinking? It was extremely immature of him.

Sodastreamin · 24/08/2025 15:47

Honestly, you both sound incredibly juvenile. I love to have a laugh and I’m extremely laid back but that’s just childish. Especially your sis

Anyone who gets that pent up over the level of a coffee has issues.

Quite. Mental health issues.

chaiselozenges · 24/08/2025 15:43

Just out of interest how full is it?

bumbaloo · 24/08/2025 15:42

So this sounds like frustration boiling over after years of asking several times a week for a fuller cup.

Obviously she shouldn’t have behaved badly. But why can’t she have a decent size cup of coffee?

DM makes me use ridiculously small cups at her house. I want an actual drink because I’m thirsty, not a ration.
