Sister went nuts over a cup of coffee

CrashBambiCoot · 24/08/2025 14:19

my sister visits my house around 3 times a week. Every time she comes she takes the piss out of my coffee calling it “half a cup of coffee” etc

She last visited Friday where I made her a coffee and she snapped “oh come on, fill it up for fucks sake” saying I’d only half filled the mug (I hadn’t).

This morning she turns up. I make coffee, as I was taking it into the living room she looks into the mugs and screams “half a cup of coffee”. I snap back “I don’t fill it to the top so it doesn’t get spilled! Nobody fills coffee right to the top” so she started dancing around me acting crazy shouting “ooo don’t spill it” etc before suddenly lunging at me and shouting in my face - coffee got spilt.

Now I’ve said I’m not making her coffee anymore. That’s it. Sick of the piss taking and ranting and raving. DH witnessed all this and basically joined in with her. She’s 42, DH is 50.

its not normal to fill coffee right to the top is it??? And the hysterics is certainly not normal is it?

OP posts:

She sounds unhinged

greengreyblue · 24/08/2025 17:21

I think you need to take a photo of your standard mug of coffee so we can judge .

WickedElpheba · 24/08/2025 17:20

I don't know what you mean by "right to the top"

Take a photo

Then just make your own coffee or go in the kitchen and fill it up yourself. No one should be behaving like an unregulated toddler over a beverage not made to your liking.

So if you know your sister wants her coffee done a certain way, you would purposefully make it the opposite way because you think it shouldn’t be done your way? It’s a very simple request - fill up the cup to the top. There is no reason why you can make her what she requested other than to be spiteful on purpose. I find that very odd behaviour on OP’s side.

It drives me crazy when people only do cups filled 1/2-2/3. If I wanted a tiny coffee I’d ask for a tiny coffee. If you are making a a drink, you fill the receptacle to about 10- 15mm from the rim ( unless there is a legitimate reason not to. I ask my DH for juice instead of coffee or tea, he brings me half a glass. He’d be bloody gutted if I made him a mini pizza for dinner instead of an actual adult meal but here I am supposed to be happy with half a drink.

Oh get over it.

I'd tell you - and OP's sister - to make your own bloody drinks if you're going to be that fussy.

Really it’s not normal at all to lose your temper over the level of your drink

that is the epitome of not normal.

What is normal is just to accept that when you go to Xs house you’ll get coffee lower in the cup than at yours. If you are losing your temper over this and screaming in people’s face you need to question why you are getting so worked up over such a triviality and consider talking to someone about your disregulation.

Next thing you’ll be trying to tell us it’s normal to punch your neighbour because they keep parking outside your house

You mean it's not?

Entitled? No, but as the post you've quoted makes clear, if it happened repeatedly then yes, it would be perfectly understandable for someone to eventually get sick of it and lose their temper.

Your sister sounds a bit nuts but I can see why she went a bit crazy if she asked you to fill her cup to the top and you kept doing what you thought was best for HER coffee. You kept doing it on purpose so she just reacted after getting fed up with you.

Filled or not filled is not the issue for me here. If a family member doesn’t like how a drink is made once, surely they should know that they just make it themselves the next time. DH and your sister are rude twits, and should be making everyone’s drinks!

That is aggressively weird. You think it’s ok to throw coffee over someone because they repeatedly didn’t follow your instruction? Are you actually ok (for real). Have you no understanding of how to behave?

Are you a ‘they made me do it’ type of person?

No it’s not? It’s not understandable for anyone to lose their temper because they don’t like the way a drink is served. That’s mental.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 24/08/2025 17:07

HoppingPavlova · 24/08/2025 14:22

What is your definition of right to the top? I would fill it/expect it to be filled to about 1.5cm below the rim of the cup, 2cm at absolute most. Filling it right to the very top so you had to sip it before you could move it would be odd though.

I agree with this. I fill it enough so I have to move slowly. If your coffee is a good 1-2 inches from the top I'd say that was weird.

Her and your DH's behaviour is poor though.

BunnyLake · 24/08/2025 17:06

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 24/08/2025 16:58

Did you miss the "I'd refuse your offer" part entirely?

You said if you had no choice but to accept. If you refuse the offer how can they be wearing the contents? So the only way they can do that is if you accept the offer of coffee then throw a hissy fit.

Spookyspaghetti · 24/08/2025 17:04

TomatoSandwiches · 24/08/2025 14:25

Get her a sippy cup just for your house, silly cow.

Yes, get some pass-agg personalised coffee thermos cups for DH and DSis. Act really genuinely overly concerned with their coffee comfort and remorseful. Basically, fight crazy with crazy as it’s the only way.

Side note; so odd your DH was supportive of that. On Mumsnet that would be an affair red flag.

I do make tea for myself I make just over half a cup as that is usually all I mange to drink before it goes cold. I’d fill it up for guests. I’d rather not spill hot tea on myself either so it still wouldn’t be right to the top. Maybe she can collect it herself from the kitchen, then it’s her problem. I hope they both apologise.

Yet another thread where the Op posts about a highly implausible scenario then disappears. Boring at this stage.

Maybe they are starting a few threads. There’s another about an OP’s sister going through OP’s dh’s phone. One opening post then silence.

Edit: that one might be genuine

Butteredradish2 · 24/08/2025 17:01

She's your sister and visits several times a week, surely she knows where everything is?! She can make her own coffee by now.

But i must say, the OP made me laugh!!

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 24/08/2025 16:58

BunnyLake · 24/08/2025 16:46

You’d lose your temper and they’d be wearing the contents? Wow, how strangely aggressive. So you’d lose your temper to a friend, a colleague? Or just a family member because you know outside of that you would look unhinged? Do you have many friends?

Did you miss the "I'd refuse your offer" part entirely?

NoSoupForU · 24/08/2025 16:57

Yes, I expect a cup of coffee to be a full cup. I'm not a child and so I'm capable of holding and drinking from a cup. But if you feel so strongly then stop offering coffee.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 24/08/2025 16:57

Lyocell · 24/08/2025 16:54

Really? You think you are entitled to throw a cup of coffee over someone because they haven’t made it how you like?

Entitled? No, but as the post you've quoted makes clear, if it happened repeatedly then yes, it would be perfectly understandable for someone to eventually get sick of it and lose their temper.

MeadowMouse · 24/08/2025 16:56

This isn't about coffee. She sounds like an unpleasant, ungrateful guest. Three visits a week sounds like a nightmare. Can you stop inviting her and go to hers instead, but less? She needs to sort herself out, and your husband should be on your side. Sorry, sounds awful.

onceuponatimeinneverland · 24/08/2025 16:56

This whole scenario sounds mad (and slightly bullying behaviour from the pair of them - I bet they think they are hilarious). Restrict coffee drinking to the kitchen. Is she normally so opinionated/picky? Your DH sounds a delight as well.

If my granddad received a cup of tea with anything more than a 1cm gap at the top he would request a saw so that he could cut the top off the cup... Done in a jokey way and he'd get himself a top up if he wanted more without a song and dance.

For me I can only seem to drink half a cup of any hot drink, so the size of the cup and whether it's completely to the top or not is irrelevant to me as I'm only going to drink half of what's provided in any case. If it's full to the brim though I'm as likely as not to spill some of it on the counter/floor as I move.

Lyocell · 24/08/2025 16:54

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 24/08/2025 16:40

Depends how often you've handed me a half-full cup of coffee despite me reminding you every single time.

I'd give up long before that point and just say no to your offer of half a cup of coffee, but in a hypothetical situation where refusal isn't an option, then yes, eventually I'd lose my temper and you'd likely end up wearing your half cup of coffee.

Really? You think you are entitled to throw a cup of coffee over someone because they haven’t made it how you like?

ClafoutisSurprise · 24/08/2025 16:52

Well, this thread has been an eye opener! I generally fill up to about 2cm from the top, whether I

BunnyLake · 24/08/2025 16:48

OVienna · 24/08/2025 16:46

She is bizarre.

As is someone else on here. Who’d think a half filled cup of coffee you’re not even paying for would bring out such odd and unhinged behaviour.
